March 4th: Ritter Sport Dark Chocolate 50% Cocoa

Back in July 2010 I made the sweeping statement that I had fully covered the Ritter Sport range, with only the now out of distribution Cocos (Coconut) bar my only admission. Thankfully for me, ChocolateMission reader David was on the ball, and just a few weeks ago he e-mailed me informing me that there was one last bar missing from my review archive. David had noticed that I hadn't reviewed Ritter's 50% dark chocolate, whats more, I hadn't reviewed the 'Diet' bar either - shame on me Eh? Haha!

After this startling revelation had been made :D I sent a cheeky little e-mail to my pals at Ritter HQ Germany. Before I knew it, I had the two 100.0g bars sitting on my kitchen table-top, prime and ready for taste testing. With the coffee on the boil, and my fellow family gathered round ready to offer their 'expert' opinions, we gave both a try after a light lunch.

Before we get in to the detail on how they tasted it is worth noting the tangible differences between the two offerings. Aesthetically the bars could be told apart by the shape of the blocks, with the standard offering having deeper cut grooves in between each piece. Calorie wise you can see the differences between the two bars below. Roughly speaking the Diet bar had 100kcal less per 100.0g compared with the standard offering, something which no doubt would have been driven the by substitution of the sugar in the original with artificial sweeteners.

Ritter Sport Dark Chocolate 50% Cocoa
Kcal 525 Fat 33.0g Carbs 51.0g (per 100.0g)

We all tried this one first as we drawn by the more modern looking packaging and non-diet proposition appealing to us more. Placing the first block in my mouth the melt was a little slow to develop, however once it did it the flow was smooth and felt nice in the mouth as it transitioned from solid to liquid. Like the melt, the taste was initially quite slow to register, and the full breadth of flavours didn't come to the party until midway through the development. Once they did arrive, we were greeted with a sweet dark chocolate experience, that although remained 'friendly' due to it being grounded by a rooting of sugar, was still interesting enough, offering minor red fruit hints. The lasting mouth impression was impressive.

7.3 out of 10

Ritter Sport Diet Dark Chocolate 50% Cocoa
Kcal 412 Fat 30.0g Carbs 44.0g (per 100.0g)

I have to admit my excitement for trying this Diet variant was considerably lower than it was for the standard bar above. I'm no organic food junkie, but the idea of artificial sweeteners being included in my foodstuffs isn't one that appeals to me all that much. In the name of being a Ritter Sport completionist (right word!?), I put those concerns aside and gave the diet bar it's fair run. No doubt you have peeked at the score already ... did I get the scores the wrong way around!? Nope!! It was a shared opinion that this diet bar was infact the better tasting out of the two. The flatter block shape not only meant it melted faster, but it was also advantageous in that the release of flavours was quicker and thus longer sustained. Speaking of the taste, compared to the standard 50% offering, this bar was far less sweet which allowed a deeper depth of cocoa flavours to be appreciated. The taste had different stages and layers of flavours, with notes of red wine, soil and coffee all intermittently detectable.

7.8 out of 10

Overall whilst neither of these were the greatest of dark chocolates in the world, they would more than hold their own against any of their mass manufactured brand dark chocolate offerings. Admiteddly it was a complete surprise that the Diet version was the better out of the two, though this is something that I would like to hear second opnions on before I went recommending one over the other.

So .... I can finally say it with validity ... I have reviewed every Ritter Sport flavour out on the market :D

Lol trying the whole ritter range is quite an achievement mate. There must be like nearing a hundred different flavours over the course of time. I'm not sure I would bother with this 50% bar. When I go for dark chocolates I normally go for something a tad stronger like 70%.

Rachel said...

Congratulations for completing your collection love. Do you know if they have anything new planned for Spring. They normally have three new flavours per season do they not?

Stu said...

How have you managed to get hold of all the different flavours? Your collection of reviews is impressive, some of the flavours you have reviewed i've not even heard of. Ritter Sport Eirkloor? What the hell lol.

Gary said...

If chocolate can be made lower calorie by using sweetners why isn't there a company or brand that has based their uniqueness around that concept? You would of thought that someone would have jumped on that as soon as the technology became available.

Selling 'low calorie' chocolate would be an easy pitch to women.

I swear there is a potential gold mine ready made for someone to take advantage of with Ritter in the UK. Whether they do it themselves or one of the supermarkets does it for them by importing their whole range, I swear they could be the next 'big thing' in terms of chocolate in this country.

I always thought it was going to be Milka but the more I think about it, the more I think it is too much alike dairy milk isn't it. Getting people to swap dairy milk for milka will be hard, but getting them in to something different like ritter sport is going to be easier because its a lot different.

Chris said...

Oh wooo another two flavours of Ritter that they don't sell in Blighty. Do you just review these ones to show off or something? Sorry but thats how it feels sometimes.

Richard said...

Ritter is sold for less that 1 euro a bar in the likes of Germany. Unless you were looking at the supermarket branded chocolates there is no way you could find one at that price here. Its such a wicked make.

Anonymous said...

Did you not think it right to give away some ritter prizes to celebrate your big accomplishment? Go on Jim you know you want to.

Linz said...

Is it a stupid question asking whether these can be bought in UK? I have emailed you before about ritter but you didnt respond to me :( Im patiently waiting for someone to start selling all of the ritter flavours. I would love to try them all myself.

Golden_Touch said...

Do you think there is anyone else in the world that has tried as many flavours as you have? It must be a rarity to have someone to have tried all of the flavours living outside of Germany.

Eoin said...

The dark chocolate with hazelnuts is well nice but I don't think the dark chocolate is good enough just to have on its own. I would always want something with it cause fillings are what ritter do best. Their actual chocolate has never been anything that special.

Anonymous said...

Considering you have done them all which do you think is best?

Henry said...

This would be near the bottom of my list of ritter bars that I would want to try if I was given a choice of them all. Im sure it would be nice enough, but its neither one thing or the other really is it.

Kim said...

I'm still desperate to try the last one you wrote about (white chocolate with cornflakes), I was making cornflake cakes last weekend and I suddenly remembered I hadn't looked into buying it yet. I think they must be hard to get hold of because even the german websites weren't stocking it. Help.

Matt said...

I just thought I would let me everyone know that you can now buy the biscuits + nuts ritter sport chocolate exclusively in Waitrose. Lol I should know because I am in control of stock management in my local store. Its embarassing to say but I squealed with excitement when I opened the box and saw all the bars. Lol they are huge btw! Much bigger than the marzipan and hazelnut bars. Go check it out.

David said...

Out of the whole lot how many of the bars did you actually pay for yourself then Jim? It would cost us all near a hundred quid if we wanted to embark on a similar lot of experimenting than you have got to do. You should count yourself a lucky man that ritter have a soft spot for you :P

Estelle said...

I always enjoy a good ritter review me :) I don't know what it is about their packaging but it always comes across as modern and clean. I can't think of a single one of their wrappers that I haven't been impressed by. Well done Ritter.

Andrew said...

Its a real shame to see that you never got to review the coconut one. A few years ago that used to be one of the few ritters you could buy in this country. It used to be one of my fave chocolates that I used to treat myself to when I hate the dollar.

Why they chose to get rid of it I will never know. Its bountys all the way now if I need my coconut chocolate hit.

Daisy said...

I knew you were obessed with Ritter but I never realised you had reviewed them all. Congratulations you must feel v pleased with yourself :-P

Knowing ritter it will only be a few months before they bring out another ten of them. You cant rest on your laurels Jim.

Dx

David said...

@Richard I well surprised to hear that it sells for under £1. Whenever I think of ritter I think of posh chocolate. That might be because its foriegn I dunno? I would have thought it would be closer to £3 a bar. It just looks so cool lol.

p.s. sorry for the triple post. I just keep thinking of things I want to say.

Nick said...

Fab review Jim and well done completing your 'collection'. Have a great weekend mate.

Lauren said...

Why would anyone buy a plain dark chocolate when there are so many cool flavours you can buy? Even if you do want the dark chocolate you can still buy ones that have nuts, marzipan or mint in. Surely plainers ones like this are going to be much less popular with everyone.

Ray said...

:) The chocolate looks/sounds nice but that wrapper looks ghastly. What a horrible shade of brown to pick. Why didn't they choose a dark coloured one for a plain dark chocolate bar. Its a puzzling decision to say the least.

Kieran said...

The best ritter flavour by miles is the yogurt one. Any time I go to europe its always the chocolate that I stock up on and bring back with me.

I'm not sure why I like it so much, lol I never eat yogurt on its own. I think it just goes really well with chocolate. The only thing we have close to it are those tiny kinder stick which they make for kids which I feel embarassed buying being nearly twenty years old lol. If you know of anywhere to buy them I would be so so happy if you could tell me.

Emma said...

As much as I love your ritter sport reviews they do often just depress me cause I know I wont ever be able to try them :(

Ritter sport need to up their game and start selling more of their different bars here. Im so sick of buying the marzipan and peppermint ones all the time. It gets very boring.

Nick said...

@Ray lol tat wrapper doesn't make much sense does it. Its a horrible colour.

Kels said...

Is ritter sport chocolate organic? I was having an arguement with one of my friends about this.
She said that all over their bars were organically produced but I thought they only had a handful of flavours that complied to this? Any clarification you can provide on this would be terrific.

Colin said...

The next flavour of Ritter Sport is going to be cookies n Creme. Jim put a link about it on the news page http://www.ritter-sport.de/blog/?p=6792#more-6792

Before anyone gets too excited though it looks like it is going to be another one that is just launched in Germany. What a surprise eh?

Jane said...

One of these days Ritter will run out of flavour ideas and their whole USP will be diminished. They can only go on making new varieties for so long. The ideas will dry up and then people will just get bored of them.

Anonymous said...

Run another competition man. I can't remember the last time you did one it's been yonks.

Peter said...

Sorry but what is the point of making a 50% choc? Is it not mainly true that you like dark chocolate or you dont? I wouldn't of thought that a middle ground exists?

I'm willing to be proven wrong if anyone wants to pipe in and say that 50% is perfect for them lol. I cant envisage too many people are going to say that though. I know Jim likes his dark chocolate loads stronger.

Harry said...

I do love ritter chocolate but this isn't one of their flavours that I would consider buying.
Its milk or white chocolate all the way for me. I would love it if they did a plain white chocolate block instead, that would be sweet (excuse the pun :).

Anonymous said...

What is the significance with the cocoa coming from Papa New Guinea? Its a claim they are making on the wrapper if you look closely. Funnily enough they don't put it on the diat version.

Gareth said...

@Gary When you see the word 'Diät' on German products it isn't 'diet' in the sense of 'low-calorie', but 'special diet' for diabetics. Unfortunately I bet the energy ratings are about the same, only one will be sugar-free.

Katie S said...

We all tried this one first as we drawn by the more modern looking packaging and non-diet proposition appealing to us more.

You can say that again. The diet dark chocolate looks like it is from the 80s or something lol.

Admiteddly it was a complete surprise that the Diet version was the better out of the two, though this is something that I would like to hear second opnions on before I went recommending one over the other.

So you admit there is potential you are off on a random one :P You are normally far more forthright stating your opinion. I don't think you will be getting too many 2nd opinions. Its not like they will ever sell these in England darling.

Eric said...

Over 50 different varieties reviews? You are one crazy guy. Well done lol.

Jessie said...

Why do you not think they do a plain white choc one? I would have thought it would be one of the first flavours they would have thought of. It's so simple.

Lisa said...

Is this the first diet version you have thought was better or has this been something you have thought about all of them?

I'm a bit cautious about buying them myself because I hear that they replace the sugar with sweetners? I'm a bit cautious when it comes to them. There is tons of research that says they are bad for your health.

Jamie said...

Am I reading this correctly? The diet version better than the normal one? LMAO what the hell is going on?
Do you think it could be accountable to the sugar levels in each one. Because there is less sugar in the diet one it sounds like it doesn't take focus away from the cocoa. In a way it makes sense that you like the less sugary tasting one if you like more concentrated chocolates.

EvTaylor said...

Do Ritter make the diat versions more expensive than the normal ones? If they do it's a bit of a rip off. Its an over sight on their part if they don't. I can see women especially being willing to pay more for a diet version.

Alicia said...

Using sweetners instead of sugar seems like such a simple change to make to the recipe. They have been doing it in fizzy drinks for years, I just wonder why no else has tried it before?

Selina said...

I don't want to open up a huge can of worms but aren't artifical sweetners bad for peoples health? I think that stigma is the reason behind no brand making an entire line of chocolates made with them in. If you think about it, it would be well bad for a company to pump loads of money into a line of chocoaltes made of sweetners and then for there to be a bit of research come out that says they are bad for people. That sort of thing could destroy a brand in one swoop, its probs not worth the risk.

Ria said...

I wasn't expecting this, I thought whenever we'd see Ritter on here again it would be with their seasonal/LE offerings. Add to this, the diet version tasting better, it's a day of surprises haha.I'd love to get the chance to compare these for myself to see if I agree. Also, I really like the colour used or the packaging.

The guys at Ritter always seem keen with interacting and responding to you, which is great, considering their stuff is barely available here. Any news on whether they're looking into expanding the varieties available here any time soon? I've found a chemist that sells more then the marzipan bar but still only the standard 4 flavours. Thanks for the review, enjoy your weekend.

Andy said...

My resolve has been broken :) Im going to have to order some bars from their online shop now I just cant help myself. If you had to pick 5 bars from their entire lot which would you go for Jim?

Are there any that you would say that I HAVE to get over the others. I know you rate the caramel with nuts very highly.

Amanda said...

Its not one of the most exciting flavours they have is it?

Like peter says I dont see the point of having a chocolate this sort of strength. As far as I'm concerned you either like dark chocolate or you dont. Lol I have never in my life thought 'Hmmmm I fancy having some chocolate that is half way between a milk and dark chocolate'. I either fancy one or the other if you get me?

Rodzilla said...

Not the type of new interesting mix I've come to expect from Ritter, but really interesting result.

Alan said...

You've certainly reviewed alot of ritter bars Jim! lol

I wouldnt be overly fussed by these two to be honest, they do such interesting other flavours I'd go for those instead. I rather like the red colour, although personally I prefer their more up to date wrappers with the two tone colours at interesting angles and more exapnsive graphics (with background images etc). I think they used them last yeara few times, was it on the summery bars?

@Peter/Amanda I se what you're saying but I imagine there will be plenty of people who want a middle range dark chocolate. Those who find milk chocolate too sweet or milky but find normal darker chocolate too strong or bitter. KitKat dark were previously around 60% dark choc, so I think theres certainly a market.

Ana said...

Picture encyclopedia, ahem, chocopedia moment over :))

I never got to try these two bars, though I'd love to. The only Ritter dark bars I can find here in stores are the whole hazelnut, the mousse and the marzipan. It's true that most of their range uses milk chocolate so I'm not missing that many bars, but still...

@Estelle: I also like the packaging of Ritter bars. Practical and cute.

@Kels: You were right, they only have 5 organic varieties (Macadamia, Milk 35%, Almond Splinters, Raisins & Cashew Nuts, Cocoa Splinters & Hazelnuts)

@Peter/Amanda: Well, I like this kind of chocolate. My favourite kind of chocolate is either high cocoa content milk chocolate or mild dark chocolate. I like to feel the cocoa, but I don't like the chocolate to get too bitter.

@EvTaylor: Yes, they do. As far as I know, that's the case for all brands. It's the same with Milka.

Jonathan said...

Ritter sport has to be the most untapped brand in terms of potential, its really quite mental they dont try make more of it here.

Has anyone got word on what the next lot of flavours are going to be from them? I know they release about fifty a year they are well overdue some new ones if I remember right.

Jim said...

Hi All,

The feedback piles up so quickly nowadays its crazy :D Rest assured I still take time to read them all, as do the Ritter team who tell me they appreciate hearing from each and every one of you.

Whats great is that you guys are increasingly talking to each other and not just directing stuff at me :D sharing is careing chaps/chap'esses.

Regarding the 50% cocoa thing that a number of you have alluded to. I agree it's not what I believe to be optimum in terms of chocolate strength, but I think its a nice level for people to ease themselves 'over to the dark side' if they are more used to milk chocolate. These weren't anything special but they were nice enough.

As for the million and ten people asking if these can be bought directly in the UK I don't believe any major supermarkets currently stock them. Your best bet are smaller merchant stores and/or Ebay/Online etc.

Rachel - The only addition to the Spring range from 2010 is the praline flavour I wrote about last month.

Stu - I've tried them all through a combination of determination and people sending me samples :D

Gary/Selina - Sweetners aren't something I completely approve of to be honest. I wouldn't feel comfortable telling people to totally sub sugar from their diet for sweetners, but then again you can look at it from the viewpoint that everything is generally ok when consumed in moderation. Until research says otherwise I wont believe that sweetners are that harmful.

Chris - I hardly see how reviewing a chocolate is showing off? please explain.

Anon - There will be a new competition up on the site in the coming weeks. Patience young grasshopper.

Anon - Which Ritter is best? I'm going to ignore that question :D I honestly can't answer it. It is dependent on what sort of mood I am in.

Matt - Thanks for letting us know. The Keks + Nuss is a fine bar. Recommended.

David - I would have paid for very, very few of these. Perhaps the first two? Lucky huh!

Andrew - Indeed it would have been nice to review the coconut one. Im very fond of the Romy Original chocolate you can get from Germany. Thats similar.

Jim said...

Ray - I don't think the choice of colour for the wrapper was bad at all. I think it does the job nicely.

Kels - Ritter have a line of bars called 'Bio'. That is their organic range.

Gareth - Thanks for sharing that info chap. To be honest I wrongly thought exactly like Gary, it's nice to know the real context behind the proposition. You prove to be as useful as always chap :D

Katie - 80s? I think that is a bit harsh :D It looks older fashioned sure, not quite as bad as that though.

Lisa / Jamie - I have rated the Diat version similarly to the main bars in the past, but no never have I rated one better than the original. I think having less sugar in the bar is possibly more to my taste, so yes Jamie you could well be right there.

EvTalyor - See what Ana said :D

Alicia - Cadbury used to do it with a bar called the Cadbury Highlights but they pulled it from distribution a few years ago. I think it quite upset diabetic people when they canned it.

Ria - Oh really? What other bars have you been able to find? Let me take a punt at them being ... peppermint, praline, hazelnut dark and hazelnut white :D Let me know if I'm right. I have asked Ritter about them expanding their presence in the UK but they haven't got back to me yet.

Andy - Make sure you get the Caramel with Nuts and the Espresso flavours. What am I saying!? Most of the flavours are so good you can't really go wrong.

Alan - The wrappers of the limited editions are different to the standard bars range yes. The packagining on the original bar is the most up to date one, it does look nice and modern in real life.

Ana - Those ones you list are the ones that most people can get here in the UK aswell. Thanks so much for helping me out with the questions. I'm getting so many comments at the moment its a little hard to keep up :D The more people talk to each other the better in my opinion.

Again thanks so much for all the comments/feedback everyone. Have cracking weekends - 7Days of Chocolate Reviews will be up tomorrow.

JIM

I share your thoughts on artificial sweeteners Jim, I don't like the thought of them either as they often have a weird taste. I'm surprised the Diet one tasted better.

Btw, I presume you will be reviewing the cookies and cream Ritter mentioned in the news section as soon as it's available?

@Amanda - I disagree, sometimes a "middle ground" chocolate is nice, not too bitter but not too sweet. Although there's less of a market for them I suppose.

Terry said...

I can't wait to see the cookies and cream bar come out. Have Ritter given you any indication when its going to become available?

Thea said...

lol if you are what you eat, a significant portion must be Ritterified by now :D

@Linz I've also found Ritter stocked in German-specialty supermarkets/delis

@Peter I like 50% chocolate a lot, mainly because it's harder for it to be ruined by bitterness

Funny artificial sweeteners should come up, just this morning I spied a can of Options in our common room and was about to finally try some when I saw 'aspartame' listed, and had to step away from the chocolate :( that stuff instantly gives me a headache.

Thea said...

PS Soil?? I have serious doubts that would enhance the taste :D
