With Easter just a few weeks away the egg reviews will be piling in thick and fast. The word thick is infact very apt for the focus of Hotel Chocolat Monday this week, as I am reviewing their Extra Thick Purist Egg. This egg came described as 'An egg made with two of our most precious chocolates - featuring rare cocoa from our own Rabot Estate Plantation on Saint Lucia and Chuao beans from Venezuela'. A more fact based description would have told you that the package included an egg comprising of one half 70% Chuao Dark Venezuela, and one half 65% Rabot Estate Dark Saint Lucia. Also included where 'ten super premium Purist pralines'.
I will only speak briefly about the quality of the presentation because I'm hoping that the 'Old Man's' photography skills have down the package justice. In my opinion the whole thing was absolutely superbly presented. Everything from the from outer box, to the way the egg was presented inside was superb, with both the egg halves coated in thick foil layers. Inside the egg, the truffles came wrapped in several layer of tightly wrapped tissue paper - the cocoa scents emanating from all these different constituents added to the excitement.
After enquiring my snazzily presented in-box menu, I decided to first dabble with a few of the 65% dark, intense pralines. More often than not, Hotel Chocolat pralines come coated in milk chocolate, so it was a nice change to taste some with a greater dark chocolate emphasis. Its fair to say that the pralines set the standard extremely high from the outset, with the combination of the rich outer chocolate dark chocolate and smooth, woody hazelnut fillings making for some deliciously smooth, satisfying pralines.
The next part of the package I took to task was the 65% Dark, Rabot Estate Saint Lucia half of the egg. This chocolate was ever so slightly lighter in colour than the other, though it still held flavours that were equally as bold. Placing the first piece of my tongue the cocoa flavours instantly came to the party, creating an instant unsweetened chocolatey impression as the soft melt began. As the melt developed the cocoa flavours became increasingly stronger, with elements of coffee, red wine and slight touches of red berry fruits encompassing the latter stages of the melt development. The taste was long, and left an impression in the mouth for a long time after consumption. Although only 5% stronger in cocoa strength, the differentiation in the origin of the beans will have largely have accounted for the perceived differences I had tasting the other 70% Dark, Chuoa Venezuela half. Just like the other half, this chocolate also broke apart with a lovely sounding sharp snap and stamped it's authority on proceedings with it's flavours as soon as it came in to contact with my tongue. The chocolate melted with the most luxurious of soft mouth feels, creating a smooth taste that had all sorts of different flavour contributions accompanying the grandest of rich cocoa base tones. Indeed, throughout the melt there were hints of smokey ash, sweet dried fruits and even small pockets of toffee that kept the taste on the correct side of that fine unsweetened/bitter balance. Despite being billed as the stronger concentrated of the two, I found this chocolate was actually the sweeter. This particular half was the first thing to be gobbled when I left out for the rest of the family to try.
Overall this was a really quite phenomenal package that included two of the finest tasting chocolates I have had the pleasure of trying for a long time. As I alluded to above, I hope you guys can all appreciate just how immaculately the package has been put together. Everything was just near enough perfect, with the chocolate shells and inner pralines flawless in appearance and detailed perfectly by the details provided on both box and inner menu. Its needless to say that this is an egg you are only going to enjoy if you like your dark chocolate. If this is the case you are in for one hell of a treat, as both the 65%, 70% and super premium pralines provide one glorious and varied dark chocolate tasting adventure. If I had to pick favourite out of all three of the inner constituents I would choose the 70% Venezuela if my arm was severely twisted :D Truth be told, anyone that appreciates the darker side of chocolate will just enjoy every microscopic piece on offer. Do I recommend this Hotel Chocolat Extra Thick Purist Egg? Do I ever!

That has to be the biggest of the year so far! It does look amazing. Im sure the chocolate will have to be the highest quality for you to give it that. Fantastic review Jim.
This is one beautiful looking egg. I sorta feel guilty about the ones I was going to give to my f+f now. Hotel Chocolat is a tough act to live up to though lol. They even make the Green Blacks ones I had in mind look pants.
Im not doubting this doesn't taste amaze but for me I think its a bit too 'serious' for an Easter egg. I don't know about you guys but I think Easter is all about the easter eggs for like cadburys and kit kats etc.
As good as this looks im still thinking the quail eggs would be the more interesting chocolates to get. You just get so much more variety.
Beautiful photos today Jim, more pics for your reviews is defo something I approve of ;) Lol im not saying I don't appreciate the words though love. You make the chocolate sound dreamy for dark choc people.
Rxxx
That is a hell of a score to be handing out so soon in to your easter revies Jim. Was it the best thing you tried?
Yay you've made my Monday with this HC show.
The eggs look uber great, so smooth and thick, I bet they taste out of this world. The pralines they put in there are the perfect bonus by the looks of things. Brilliant post.
Great review Jim its good to see HC mondays back on the agenda. Its still a few weeks until easter have you got any more egg reviews coming in our direction? I hope so :)
I said it last week and I will say it again mate - EGGS-cellent review LOL.
You must have eaten your way through thousands of pounds worth of hotel chocolat in the last three years. Its probably a good thing you get to eat thse things for free. Lmao you probably need the money for your gym pass to work it all off. Great review mate.
I don't think im ever going to be joining your dark chocolate lovers club but even I can appreciate what a good job your mates HC have done with this egg.
You can just tell that everything about it is made with the highest quality stuff and im not just talking about the chocolate. They seem to have immense attention detail with the box and bow. I just hope their milk and white chocolate eggs are this good.
The egg looks amazing man but where is the Hotel Chocolat mug? I've looked all across their easter range and they don't have a jokey easter egg with a mug. Poor play. You have to get a mug with whatever easter egg you get.
Why are HC not doing that 3 for 2 deal they had going on last yr. That was amazin cause it meant I could get exactly the right amount for my brothers. Do you know if they are going to start it up soon Jim?
Dx
Jim did you attend the Chocolate festival this weekend? I thought it was so good. I will be booking my ticket for next year as soon as I can man.
I can dream all I want but there isn't a hope in hell of my getting a hotel chocolat egg like this one. My parents do buy us easter eggs still but they wouldn't ever spend any more than a few pounds. I wont kid myself and even consider that I will be able to get one of these.
Dark chocolate and pralines. Nom nom!!! An unbeatable combination if you ask me.
OMG HAS ANYONE SEEN HOW MUCH ONE OF THESE THINGS COST?
Looks awesome Jim nice review.
I think Hotel Chocolat have done a really nice job repackaging the whole purist range in the last year. I remember when it first came out it was a tad boring looking but now they have done a great job making it look a bit more modern and expensive. I can imagine this egg is going to be pretty pricey but some things are just worth paying for aren't they.
Yuck dark chocolate. No way should this have got a rating like that. Let me doing your scoring next time :P
Top reviewing m8. Its a predictable turn out with your score but I think you've done a good job justifying it to us all. The only thing putting me off treating myself to one is the price tbh with you.
Over thirty pounds? Lol you lot are going to throw the insults at me but this time I think I have a big case. No way can any chocolate egg ever be worth thirty pounds for. Just think about the stuff you could buy for that money. I love chocolate as much as anyone but I can't ever see myself handing over that much money for it.
I don't think I would buy it cause I'm not a dark chocolate fiend but I have to say this is one mean looking egg. I think you are right giving it the presentation score it got, I haven't seen it up close irl but I can just tell that it comes across mega classy. Great work again Jim. Your HC reviews are always some of your best work.
Awesome review again J I really enjoyed this one. Hotel Chocolat reviews are always predictable but I understand that HC are just quality so its not like you can make anything up =)
Cripes that is one classy looking package there. Im not sure it was the best of decisions not letting people see the egg in the box though. I wonder if people who are less clued up about it will be put off by not being able to see it in that first box? Hmm just a thought.
Lol no surprises here then. Great photos Jim you've done a jolly gd job showing it off its best side.
10/10 for the review today mate ;) I think I just found my egg of choice for this year. I've been looking to try some more dark chocolates recently so this could be a nice little starter for me. I love the idea of trying two different ones out at the same time.
Hey J
Dodgy result for Man U at the weekend. I would have thought you would have won by a lot more than that against Fulham. Its a big game tonight for us versus Man City tonight. I don't feel to confident about our chances but I can see us getting a draw out of them if we play our best.
Lol I always start with the footbal don't I :-) Lol I am well impressed by the egg today though. Knowing you I thought you would have saved the best of what you had for the last reviews so im kinda curious as to what else you have in store for us all. If its half as good as this purist eggs sounds then we are going to be in for something special huh?
Cheers
N
I have all my fingers and toes crossed in hope I get an hotel chocolate egg this year. If I don't get one I'm going to be big time disappointined.
This is such a beautiful egg. You can see the from your photos how fresh it all looks.
Its annoying because I know I wont ever get one of these :( I will have to just imagine that my inevitable cadburys/nestle egg tastes as good as this does.
When is the hotel chocolate competition starting then ;) Surely we are running out of time for you to send me my egg through Jim.
I love HC as much as the next person but I couldn't part with £30 for it http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk/dark-easter-egg-P300171/
Its just too much for me.
I will only speak briefly about the quality of the presentation because I'm hoping that the 'Old Man's' photography skills have down the package justice. In my opinion the whole thing was absolutely superbly presented. Everything from the from outer box, to the way the egg was presented inside was superb,
You are so rude to your seniors :P He's more than done it justice. The photography is some of the best ever.
Truth be told, anyone that appreciates the darker side of chocolate will just enjoy every microscopic piece on offer. Do I recommend this Hotel Chocolat Extra Thick Purist Egg? Do I ever!
One might gather you kinda liked this one? I can see why don't worry. I don't think I will be buying anything this fancy due to finances, but a girl can dream. I will just have to stare at your review for now.
I want this egg and I want it now lol! This is the one im going to be showing to my boyrfriend. He did well at valentines day (he bought me one of the boxes of chocolates) so hopefully he will come through again with one of these for me. If he doesn't he is going to be in trouble lol ;).
Im not sure which im going egg im going to get this year. My parents normally buy me and my sisters one each but its not like we request special ones. Lol after seeing this I might do so this year.
I get this would be wonderful for people that like dark choc but are you going to review any of the milk choc eggs J? No matter how much I try I just can't appreciate these 'fine' dark chocolates. My tastes still haven't changed from when I was little, I even find the milk chocolate hotel chocolat stuff strong.
This is their top tier egg by the looks of the prices on the online side. If this was their intention they did a gd job making it look like it.
Part of me though cant stop thinking they have made it a bit too serious. Easter things should be more colourful and fun imo.
Im not enthralled that they just praline chocolates AGAIN!!!!! but the rest of it sounds nice.
Jim have you not noticed how everything they make now comes with pralines? Do these people not know that not everyone likes nuts. It doesn't affect me but you would of thought they wouldn't do it because it would rule their product out for nut allergens anyway.
Just how thick is this egg then? Its the only thing we can't take away from your fab pics.
A high rating for this egg, it must be good then! Looks so tempting, i love hotel chocolat's easter range, never fail to disappoint!
I think this is the best egg I have ever seen. The massive rating looks more than justifiable. Great review Jim thanks so much for it. Hopefully with any luck I can convince someone to get it me this easter. I just need to find someone rich.
Woow Jim this egg looks so pwetty & sounds lush! As much as I'm keeping my fingers crossed very very hard that I get a HC egg I don't think I'll be that lucky :(. Ahh well - great review & pics anyway! x
That's one big egg. How much does it weigh? I'm guessing it must be around 400g... if not more.
I'm not sure about this egg to be honest lol while I can see that its impressive, it is extremely expensive. I really don't know anyone who would contemplate spending that amount on one easter egg no matter how nice it is. I'm no HC lover but as a few others have mentioned, it just looks so.. boring! Its classy but so deadly dull. Easter is supposed to be fun and colourful, black and white are the complete opposite. I don't know, theres just something about HC that just doesnt work for me alot of the time. My sister quite likes them, I got her one of the giant slabs last year for her birthday - dark chocolate with the crispy bits and 'chocolate sundaes' in..I wasnt impressed lol
Ive found a few nice alternatives this year to the normal eggs about. Theyre abit more expensive but no where near this price lol
HI All,
Thanks for all the nice words on the review today. As you can see by the score and the review this was one of the best products I have had the pleasure of tasting/writing about in the last year or so.
Hotel Chocolat products do tend to score very well on this site all the time, but this one was very very good! If you like your dark chocolate and have the money to treat yourself to one I insist you do so!!
KIM - I think your friends will understand you not spending £30.00 each on them :D Unless your a millionairre Im sure they will understand. Cheesey to say but its the thought that counts anyway!
ANON - You will have to wait and see if it is THE best wont you :D its going to take some beating though huh!
BRIAN - Plenty more egg reviews to come.
DARREN - Indeed thats probably true. I do share a lot of it though.
GOLDEN - They aren't doing mugs chap! If you want one of them you should look elsewhere!!
DAISY - No idea I'm afraid. Didn't they start the promotion after Easter last year to get rid of the stock? I think thats what they did anyway.
MARK - Agreed they have done a great job repackaging this particular line. I think at one point it they even had part of it called Hotel Chocolat 'The Library' :D Hardly the most exciting name huh!?
RICHARD - You have to put these things in context chap. This is a very special offering that you wouldn't necessarilly buy for just anyone. It's for people that like their dark chocolates and who want the highest of highest quality they can get.
GRAEME - I get what you mean but it does detail in great detail on the back what the package includes.
NIGEL - Dodgey result!? What game were you watching? I'm watching the Liverpool game now! You are absolutely spanking City :D Its good to watch haha!
ANON - No competition in the plan at the moment I'm afraid. I just haven't had the time lately to put it together. Time pressure from the day job I'm afraid.
KAREN - If this is the same boyfriend you were threatening at Christmas time I feel sorry for the poor lad haha!
BECCI - I will be reviewing some of their milk chocolates eggs yes. Coming soon! Watch this space :D
JOEY - I see how it can be frustrating if you don't like praline yes. I can't even imagine someone not liking their pralines though. I can't get enough of them.
Lauren - The egg is the thickest I have ever seen. Probably 2.5 inches thick - perhaps more at the base. It's seriously hard to break apart :D
ROXY - That is a real shame you don't think you will get one! Why not treat yourself to one :D
ANA - It was indeed 400.0g I believe! There were ten praline chocolates for starters!!
ALAN - It really is a case of either your going to really love this egg, or just think it is over priced! As I keep saying if you like your Hotel Chocolat dark chocolate I can't suggest a better Easter product this year. I honestly rate it that highly. Like you say £30.00 is a heck of a lot of money though. It really is one of the best quality products I have had from them though.;
Thanks for all the feedback guys/gals! I will check in again tomorrow to see if you have anymore.
JIM
I wasn't sure, I knew that most of their similar sized eggs that pack about the same number of chocolates are 390g-400g. But all those other eggs were £24.
£30... that would be £7.5 per 100g. Still damn expensive. But perhaps I would buy a smaller version. I know that on a few occasions I have paid similar amounts for chocolate boxes that were around 100g-125g... and one of the things I intend to buy in the near future is a 95g box of chocolates from Michel Cluizel that would cost about the same amount.
Also, I must agree with those who have said that this egg doesn't feel like an Easter product. They have another Easter egg called Your Eggselency - that one seems more of an Easter egg to me. Sure, I have a soft spot for Venezuelan cocoa, so I'd love to taste the chocolate that half of the shell was made of, but there's no need for it to be in a Easter product - a small chocolate bar that's available at any time of the year would be just great.
Some reviews of the smaller things would be tops mate. Im all for giving top of the range stuff but I don't think my pockets can afford these eggs all round lol. It would be cool to see some reviews for the meduim sized eggs they are doing this year.
I see some people are saying this one is too expensive? Lol you guys should check out this bad bad.
http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk/Chocolate-Easter-Egg-P300176/ £65 for the ostrich egg. How awesome would it be to get one of them. It would take a year to eat I bet lol.
Are you going to review those huge Kinder surprise eggs that they have in tescos at the moment? I thought they were pretty expensive for just kinder eggs. If I remember right they were like £8 for 2. You could get a lot better stuff for your money for that. Lol you could buy yourself a 1/4 of this egg for starters lol.
I got the purist egg last year but it was only made up of the one type of chocolate which I think was the 70% dark chocolate. I think its a grand idea putting two different ones in there this year. We can all pretend we are connisseurs and try and pick out the differences between them. Lol I don't think I'm an expert but it will be interesting to do.
This might sound stupud but the thing that appeals to me most about this entire thing are the dark chocolate pralines. They look and sound incredible, I can never get enough of their pralines. Im addmiteddly a little obssesed with them.
No competition :( That sucks mega balls.
@Jim They should have made one with a mug. Feed that back for them to do next yr ;)
On another note has anyone else here noticed how there are far less types of easter eggs around this year? The supermarkets seemed to have hundreds and hundreds of them, but they are all the same type if you get what I mean. I went shopping this and I saw like four huge crates of mini egg and Dairy Milk ones but those were the only two. There weren't any ones like Twirl, Crunchie or any of the makes like that. I swear the selections been but ten fold.
I don't even like dark chocolate but I think this looks uber cool. For me some of the other Extra Thick Eggs look more suitable though. That milk chocolate one that Ana shows looks well nice.
Awesome reviews Jim. I know everyone on here says it but its genuine affection. Well done.
God I would love to be able to buy one of these but I just cant justify spending thirty pounds on one.
I think like some of the other people are saying Im going to have to look at the smaller bits and pieces.
Wowzers, I've not ever seen you rate something this high on your chart thingys.
Well done Hotel Chocolat, I'm sure it is very well deserved. I'm going to hold off buying my Easter gear for a bit longer. I just want to see if you are going to give anything else a score like this one.
Brill review Jim thanks. Your're so lucky getting to eat all these amazing things from Hotel Chocolat. I probs only get to have some of their chocolate one or two times a year. By the sound of things you seem to get something from them each week you lucky bugger :P Cheers for the review m8.
I thought that was a shoebox at first lulz =) It does all look a bit fancy pants for me. I think I would be just as pleased getting a few different cheaper eggs rather than one massive dark choc one. I would imagine it would all get rather boring after a while.
As much as I want to dream about getting an egg like this, I sadly think it is just a dream :( My parents say their slabs are too expensive and they are like half the price.
Sounds amazing! I'm definitely going to have to look that one up! Thanks so much for sharing.
@Golden_Touch its funny, I said the exact same thing a couple of days ago on here, there used to be so many different eggs about but now theyre really limited and very 'samey'. No Bounty, Terry's Chocolate Orange, even things like Fruit and Nut Ive not seen! Im sure it must be down to rising costs and it must be expensive to produce many many different lines. A real shame though :(
ANA - I agree it is expensive but sometimes you just have to cough up the cash if you want some really special I guess. They do make the Purist range in bar form ... that is their original format! Just check out the 'Chocolate bar' drop down on their site!
JK - Don't worry I have some more smaller egg reviews coming up on the horizon.
DAVID - Its a beast isn't it.
LUCY - I haven't seen them. I will look next time I'm in Tesco.
GOLDEN - I'm sure they will read their own feedback chap :D ... infact I know they will read their own feedback!
GOLDEN/ALAN - Indeed I have noticed this aswell myself. What they seem to have done is packaged a lot of the secondary bars together, so instead of their being saying a Bounty Egg, a Twix and a Galaxy Egg seperately, they seem to have combined them all in to one 'Mars' package. I think Cadbury have done something similar. Its a shame because the choice is rather slim now.
Thanks All
JIM
