April 18th: L'Artisan du Chocolat Assorted Mini Egg Box

Last week L'Artisan du Chocolat made a long overdue ChocolateMission return with my review of their Creme de la Creme Passion Fruit Milk Egg. With such positive feedback coming you from all after that post, L'Artisan decided to send across a few more of their Easter 2011 offerings - one of which was this L'Artisan du Chocolat Assorted Mini Egg Box.

This 200.0g box assortment came billed to me as a 'selection of chocolate filled mini eggs'. The L'Artisan website detailed seven different flavours ranging from dark chocolate to liquid salted caramel. Curiously enough, my box only contained six of the promised variants - with the dark chocolate and mint egg unfortunately MIA. That annoyance aside, I was thoroughly impressed with the way the rest of the product was presented. The exterior box was nicely constructed, and the eggs inside were nicely differentiated by their outer shell colourings - if only there had been a small little menu to identify the flavours from outset (yes I know many of them were self identifiable!! :D ).

Below are my thoughts on the flavours ...

Liquid Praline in Dark - I wanted to get my least favourite out the way first, as some of the rest were far superior. These eggs had fantastically tasty outer dark chocolates shells, but it was almost like the cocoa flavours were too intense as the flavours of the praline centre didn't come through with any great vigour. They were still nice enough, but I think the praline centre would have worked better with a less intense chocolate. Standard.

Vanilla in White - I hadn't had any experience with L'Artisan white chocolate before, but if these eggs are anything to go by then they have some real potential. The white chocolate shells established a strong set of cream based flavours, which flowed nicely in to the cool feeling, light bourbon flavours of the ganache centres. Superb.

Pistachio in Milk - These were golden in colour, and golden in taste. The pistachio flavour contribution was outstandingly strong for such small eggs, and created the most wonderful sweet and salt contrasts. The mouth feel of the drier pistachio centre did take a little getting used to, but even that was moistened by the free flowing, smooth melt of the milk chocolate. The salty pistachio was insanely moreish. Superb.

Milk Ganache in Milk - You would have thought these would have been the most boring in the selection, but they actually proved to be just as flavoursome as any of the other pieces. The 35% milk chocolate had a lovely balance of milk and cocoa flavours, and these were built upon by the soft ganache centres which enhanced the overall with a small note of vanilla. Very Good.

Liquid Salted Caramel in Dark - If you saw my review of L'Artisan du Chocolat No. 1 Sea Salted Caramels last year (See HERE) then you will be all to aware at how capable L'Artisan are in this area. These were quite simply out of this world, and delivered much the same experience with the only changing being the lack of cocoa dusting on the exterior shells. If you are sensible enough to buy some of these this year I would make sure you get your fair share of these. Superb.

Dark Ganache in Dark - These 72% dark chocolate eggs were the richest tasting in the selection, and packed one heck of an unsweetened cocoa flavour punch that offered suggestions of coffee and red wine. My only slight issue with them was that they seemed most effected by the confectioners varnish, which had been used to keep the eggs looking in top condition. It was nothing major, but it just slowed down the initiation of the wonderfully soft melting chocolate. Very Good.

Overall these weren't perfect, but they were a lovely little selection of eggs that were nicely varied in flavour despite the misplacement of the mint egg. Although a few of the variants obtained Superb ratings, by far and away the stand out eggs were the Liquid Caramel in Milk ones. This may just be a case of personal preference, but this is genuinely where I think L'Artisan stand out from a congested chocolate market - if you are a fan of your chocolate caramels then you must simply try these for yourself. The other eggs of note were the white chocolate and pistachio flavours - the latter especially noteworthy for it's incredible golden coloured shell and green creme filling. There are so many generic egg shaped chocolates around this year that it is hard to tell the wheat from the chaff. I can ensure you that these L'Artisan du Chocolat Assorted Mini Eggs are certainly worthy of a purchase if variety is what you are after.

This looks like a nice little collection of eggs with a cool spread of flavours. I would be disinterested in the white chocolate and some of the nuttier ones but apart from that these look and sound the business. Easter only 5 days away now!

After seeing you fawning over them for a second time I think Im going to have to get me some of those caramels. They look stunning.

Hotel Chocolat Monday? What happened to it man??????

Lol I will forgive you this once because these sound very nice themselves.

These all look so pretty. I wouldn't have guessed the pinky/red ones were going to be dark chocolate though. I would of thought they would have peanut or something. The only ones I think I would be a little cautious about are the gold coloured ones. I don't like pistachio to begin with but I would be curious to try one of them just because the gold colour looks so unique. Fab review hun.

That box is so lovely. It looks like it should be a box of jewellry or something like that. Quality of presentation is such an important detail. Its a shame when you come across something that tastes lovely but doesn't look impressive. Several things from Thorntons come to mind.

Your Easter reviews this year have been some of your best mate, thanks for showing these off today, I just wish they were something I could actually buy. They would have been perfect as something I could have gifted to my parents as a single present cause there are flavours in there that both of them like. Ah well.

Hey J

Sorry mate but I got to bring it up! What happened to Man U on Saturday? Man you guys were rubbish. I thought you were going to walk all over City. Manchester City vs Stoke in the final sounds so pants. I hope Stoke go on to win it so it breaks up the whole monopoly of our football nowadays.

Im sure you will be glad to hear I did all my easter choccie shopping on saturday. I picked up two flake eggs for little broter and sister and then a bigger Green and Blacks one for my parents to share between them. I know none of that sounds very fancy but my brothers and sisters are both pretty young and wouldn't appreciate anything more.

Cheers
N

Congrats on another fantastic review Jim boy. Top work with the photos showing the insides of them. They could do with having your pics on their website. Its hard to tell what the hell they are with just their ones.

Artisan du Chocolat are tops but they need to start setting up shops to sell their chocolate in. Selling online just isn't enough to make it these days.

JK said...

The silver and gold eggs look cool but where are the bronze ones? :) If they were going to do bronze they could have made a fudge flavour.

Alison said...

Jim what would you recommend the 500g or 200g? Do you get a good amount of each with the 200g?

Mandy said...

My family are all being uber mean with Easter this year. Supposedly we have all 'agreed' ... yes 'agreed' not to buy chocolates for each other. Its so depressing isn't it. We aren' t religous or anything but everyone should celebrate Easter to a certain degree. If only for a bit of fun. This is going to be the worst Easter ever.

Paul said...

This would be such a useless selection to buy for sharing in my house. All the decent flavours would get snapped up first no doubt leaving the boring old dark chocolate ones left. They should have just made them all flavoured instead of having plain ones.

Michael said...

I wish I could afford speciality chocs like this but its just going to have to be lindt for me this year.

I've asked for one of those big packs of Lindor truffles with all the different flavours in.

Why didn't Lartisan do some mini versions of the bigger eggs you had up the other week. I did think the white choc and passionfruit ganache sounded lush, but the eggs themselves did look a bit on the large size for lil ol me :) I much prefer smaller little things I can snack on, so these would be much better for me than getting a bigger egg. Great review.

Anonymous said...

When people like Lartisan send you chocolate do they give you money to say nice things about them? I don't know why I have bothered asking since its not likey you would ever admit it. I would be disappointed if I found out this was what happened on this site.

Linda said...

Great review darl. I think I'm the most excited person I know about Easter this year. I've bought a few things from Hotel Chocolat for the first time ever. We aren't opening anything until next weekend though. Even the kids have some tiddly pots to share.

Robert said...

I do get a little frustrated when I see such things like this. Looking at the two things you have reviewed from Artisan I just find it bewildering how you can buy one of their bigger eggs for 1.50 and then have to pay ten times that amount for a selection of smaller ones. It don't make much sense to me :-)

Joe said...

I always think its a bit dodge ordering chocolate eggs in the post. I would of thought there was a high likelyhood of them getting smashed and ruined the way packages get thrown around.

Will said...

I wish I had seen this earlier. It would have been just perfect for my girlfriend. We haven't been going out long so it would have fit the bill of 'nice but small' perfectly. Hmmm I hope shes happy with what I have got her.

Henry said...

Does anyone know if they are making the Princess eggs with the marshmallow inside this year? The chocolate on them was never anything special but I did like the middle bit. I remember a few times buying two, eating the centres of both and then disgarding the chocolate lol.

Emma said...

I created a list :) A list of things I want you to review for us all please of chocolate master.
1. Giandujar Milk Bar
2. Caffe Latte Milk Bar
3. Rooibos Tea Milk Bar
4. Buffalo Milk Bar
5. Wild Wild West White Chocolate Wild Bar
That enough for you? Lol its an expensive list if you have to buy them all yourself lol.

Gemma said...

Another great review Jim thanks so much. I like the fact you haven't just focused on all the boring mass produced rubbish those big corporations have pumped out for easter. They should be embarassed about some of the products they have made this year. Its so much better reading about things made by these smaller speaciliast companies.

Anonymous said...

Roughly how many eggs did you get in that box?

Lewis said...

I would have been so annoyed if I didn't get the mint ones. All the other flavours sound nice, but its minty chocolates that are my favourite so I would have felt very cheated. I would have knocked off more than just one mark if they did that to me lol.

Ana said...

Never thought I'd say this... but I actually find the white chocolate eggs to be the most tempting ones :)

Colin said...

You've cheated us out of Hotel Chocolat for the 2nd time in 3 weeks now jim. Whats going on lad?

I was hoping today was going to be the day you gave us the review of the almighty ostrich egg of theirs. I still can't believe how big that one has to be lol. No one in their right mind would buy it.

Ash said...

This is impressive from artisan again. I wish I had heard about them a bit earlier. Its a little too late in the day to be ordering anything now doh.

Hayley said...

Does anyone else think that they mucked up the colours and flavours a bit?
Surely they would have been better off putting the caramel in the gold and the pistachio in the silver? They look weired the way round that they do. Just a random one =P I know it doesn't matter at all.

Yasmine said...

I like the choice of flavours here. I like all of them which is a non to common thing to find with selections like this.

Jamie said...

I hate to bring up money again but I was surprised to see that these cost £15 without even adding postage. You can buy an awful lot of things for fifteen pounds these days, I did my weekly shopping for round about that much last week I think (lol I am a cheapo student :P ) Alas the point I'm trying to make is that they aren't cheap.

Anonymous said...

Well done again L'Artisan thats another very credible score for a smaller brand. Pistachio is a bit of a strange one to include considering the more popular flavours they could have done. Im not complaining it was just an observation.

Anonymous said...

Gorgeous photos love. The gold coloured eggs look a little strange to me lol. The red ones look like caramel to me.

Lee said...

Why didn't they put any fruit flavoured eggs in there? its a bit strange they didn't considering their bigger eggs are both fruity. I think an orange coloured egg with an orange flavoured centre would have been a grand idea imo.

Lauren said...

I went and did all my Easter shopping this weekend and ended up spending an absolute bomb in Hotel Chocolat.

My family better appreciate what I have bought them. Im going to be fuming if they don't realise how much extra I spent on them this year. It's hardly like I have a huge amount of spare money at the moment.

Sally said...

I could do without the dark chocolate ones but the rest do tickle my fancy just a wee bit :P Im assuming that they are fresh ganache fillings because of the price? Im getting v tired of all these fondant/sugar made ones. I've only just realised that all the companies make them like that so that they last longer and don't go off. How cheap of them.

Tony said...

Hey Jim
Cool review again but its a shame its a little late in the day for me to get something from artisan for easter this year.

Mark me down as someone else who wants to see what else they make mate. These guys look like they might have some hidden gems, I wonder why we never hear more about them :S

Alicia said...

Yummo! You have a bad habit for making me hungry on a monday morning :P You and my diet ambitions just do not mix.

Selina said...

These wouldn't be worth buying for kids but for a partner or friend they would be a nice little present by the looks of things. I love the glittery effect of the gold and silver eggs, they make the rest look a bit boring though. I think I know which I would be attracted to first if they were laid out in front of me.

Roxy said...

Fab Monday review dude. "...if you are a fan of your chocolate caramels then you must simply try these for yourself'...
I looove chocolate caramel combos Jim so I'll have to take your advice then & try & get my mitts on some of these won't I? ;) x

Jim said...

Hi All,

I'm sure you are all looking forward to the Easter break as much as I am.

I see a few of made reference to the fact this one has come late in the day so it wasn't as useful as it could have been. Apologies for that but it was just a consequence of all the product I got sent, something had to be pushed back in the schedule I'm afraid, and this was just the one I guess.

Those of you complaining that today isn't Hotel Chocolat Monday should be more appreciative of my efforts :D Don't you worry, HC will be featuring in my Buyers Guide which I will be posting on Wednesday.

STEVEN - I highly recommend their caramels. They are very very good.

NIGEL - Lets not talk about the FA cup chap :D It was a sore defeat to take thats for sure. It was softened a little by the fact you guys pulled that draw out the hat though :D I don't think I have ever cheered a Liverpool goal until then. I think what you have bought for your family sounds great. I'm sure they are going to be very appreciative of what your going to buy.

ANON - You can buy their chocolates in the likes of Harrods/Selfridges etc. They also package their parcels very well so I wouldn't have any qualms about ordering online.

JK - I think the red coloured ones are meant to be the bronze.

ALISON - The 200.0g box would be more than sufficent for most people I think. You do get a lot of eggs in that size. 500.0g would be excessive in my honest opinion.

PAUL - Luckily this isn't such a issue with my family as we generally all like different flavours and chocolates.

FIONA - They would have worked nicely I think.

ANON - No they don't pay money for positive reviews. They send the products with the knowledge that I get to say what I want about them.

ROBERT - The 'large' eggs you talk about are £1.50/27.0g ... these are £15.00/200.0g + packaged much better. I think thats a fair price myself.

HENRY - I've not see the Princess eggs around this year no. Do you know who makes them?

EMMA - Thats a nice list you have created there :D Its really up to L'Artisan what I do/don't review. Hopefully they will pick up your list and see what others want aswell. Thanks for spending the time saying what you want to see though :D

GEMMA - Theres plenty of time for 'mass produced rubbish' later this week haha :D I get your point loud and clear about the smaller chocolate folk though :D I will see what I can do.

ANON - How many eggs in the box? Haha that sounds like a competition question :D I didn't count to be honest ... there were a lot put it that way.

ANA - Any special reason why the white choc is the one you fancy?

COLIN - Sorry about HC monday not happening but was this not sufficent enough!? Apologies for disappointing you chap, its never my aim.

HAYLEY - Gold for caramel makes more sense to me yes. One thing you could say is that it's not a golden caramel ... its a dark liquid one :D

JAMIE - See what I said to Robert above.

LEE - It would have been nice to have a fruity one in there I agree. Like someone said earlier it would have been fab if they had made smaller version of the creme de la creme eggs.

LAUREN - I'm sure they will be highly appreciative. If they haven't had chocolate from HC before they will really love you :D

SALLY - Indeed they are all ganache fillings apart from the pistachio, praline and caramel fillings.

SELINA - Women and shiney objects eh!? :D

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Will check back tomorrow.

JIM

I wouldn't say these look anything that special if im honest. I thought the passionfruit egg you reviewed was great because it was a unique flavour but all of these apart from the pistachio are pretty boring don't you think? The only ones apart from the gold that I'm half curious about are the caramels but thats only because of that other post you wrote about them ages ago. Lol I might aswell just get some of them if I was to buy anything.

Ian said...

The colours are so nice :) I love how nice the gold and silver ones look but I wouldn't have guessed they were the pistachio and caramel. They would be the other way round if you are wondering what I think :P I would have swapped them round just to be complicated with you lol.

Rob said...

I have a feeling that everything you are going to review this week is going to be egg shaped :-) Show some love to the bunny wabbits Jim. There are plenty of them hanging around this year.

Thea said...

Those metallic ones are some of the prettiest chocolates I've ever seen, especially the pink. I'm guessing the presentation score would have been higher if they hadn't annoyingly left out the the mint ones, and included a menu.

David said...

@Henry

Is this the one you are on about? If so I haven't seen them for ages.

Mark said...

Im the complete opposite to the person who said they prefer smaller chocolate eggs as opposed to the larger ones. I'm not talking about the big crappy hollow eggs, but more the ones like Creme eggs and Galaxy eggs etc.

KP said...

Im off on holiday to America this Easter so haven't bought much chocolate for easter this year. If I was staying in the country I would probably have bought a selection of smaller things thing from thorntons, Hotel chocolate and artisan if I could figure out where the hell to buy their stuff. Thanks for the reviews anyway mate. Whilst im away I will be trying to keep up to date with chocolate mission goings on if I can.

Katie S said...

Wicked review J. I hope you have plans to review some more from these guys after Easter aswell. It would be interesting to see how highly you rate some of their truffles and chocolate bars compared to some of the other big guns.

Anonymous said...

If someone like Thorntons had missed out a flavour like Artisan did with the mint eggs, you would have canned them. I think its very sloppy to promise something and then not give it. Imagine if that was the one that got someone to buy them. They would feel mega mega cheated if they turned up likes yours did. Was there an explanation given?

Sam said...

Hmm there are a few too many in here that I wouldn't like so I don't think I would buy these.
I don't like nuts so that rules out the pistachio and praline ones straight away, I wouldn't be fussed about the caramel or dark chocolates one either so all I would be left with are the milk and white choc ones which doesn't make it worth it really.

Anonymous said...

I know im just repeating what others have said but these kind of reviews of the lesser known people are so much more interesting than the ones about the same old bigge chocolate makes. I say you should focus on the ones like this even more than you do.

Jim said...

ADE - The flavours are pretty standard yeah but calling them boring is a little on the harsh side I think.

IAN - I can see how you might of thought they would make more sense the other way round.

ROB - There are plenty of rabbits in todays post chap :D

THEA - They do look cool don't they. Indeed they would have probably done a little on the presentation and other metrics if they hadn't committed those minor faux pais. A little sloppy on their part really.

KP - I wouldn't worry chap ... I'm sure they will have plenty of American easter chocolates to meet your needs :D

KATIE - This is dependant on Artisan sending me their chocolates themselves. I hope they do.

ANON - All manurfactures get treat differently. I review products not brands :D I couldn't care less what something comes branded under.

ANON - I think a mixture of the bigger and smaller companies is the way forward for this website. Getting a good blend of the two is seemingly what works out best.

JIM
