April 1st: 'Bits n Bobs' Japanese Superpost 2011 # 4

I've buckled to demand with 'Bits n Bobs' today and have finally got around to posting some highly requested Kit Kat and Pocky reviews. As a little added bonus I've also included another fantastic flavoured bar from Meiji - as you will see by the scores the standards are very high this week!
----

Kit Kat Green Tea Variety Minis
Kcal 69 Fat 4.0g Carbs 7.7g (Both Varieties)

I can't think for whatever reason why but there weren't too many volunteers coming forward from my family taste panel when these arrived in our latest J-List sampling box :D Indeed the task was left up to me to try these new green tea flavoured Kit Kats. Despite the rest of my families disregard, it seems that these are quite the popular product at J-List - at time of writing this post they were actually the best selling snack product on the website! This bag of thirteen minis contained two different green tea varieties, with six Rich Green Tea packs and seven Matcha Milk chocolate. Both flavours were portioned in 13.2g Mini format - small and unsatisfying, but certainly not lacking flavour.

If you look at the photos of each of the two above, you will see that in addition to the differentiated wrappers, there were also minor differences to the colouring of the two very funky looking green bars. Taste wise the two different varieties were only subtly different, though after a few of each I was able to pick my favoured one. As you will see reflected in the scoring charts below, my preference fell with the Matcha Milk Chocolate (the lighter green pack) as it had a creamier, sweeter aftertaste that didn't have the hint of bitterness that the other did. On the whole, I found both varieties both tasty and unique with their sweet, herby grass flavours complimented superbly by the malty wheat wafers. I have little doubt that the more adventurous Kit Kat lover will get a great deal of pleasure from these, though common sense tells you that they of course aren't going to be a product to appeal to everyone.

Kit Kat Rich Green Tea - 8.0 out of 10
Kit Kat Matcha Milk Chocolate - 8.1 out of 10

Glico Pocky Chocolate on Chocolate Caramel
Kcal 81 Fat 4.5g Carbs 9.2g (per 15.1g pack)

Despite the popularity of Kit Kats supposedly overtaking these in Japan, whenever I ask readers what brands and products they wanted to see reviewed on the site one of the most frequently requested are Pocky. Back in November I featured the first two variants from Pocky's new 'Chocolate on Chocolate' range (See HERE), a line of products that have supposedly come in to replace the Pocky Desserts. After sending my sampling recommendations to Peter at J-List, he saw fit to send across the latest flavour released on this new line-up - the Pocky Chocolate on Chocolate Caramel.

Unlike the Kit Kats above there were plenty of forthcoming volunteers willing to try these so I was glad to see they came in four sealed packets that had three sticks contained within each. On the J-List website, these were described as 'biscuit sticks covered in caramel and milk chocolate', which combined with the delightful toffee aromas had my expectations built up really quite high. Thankfully it was agreed by one and all that these expectations were delivered on. Despite the aged old problem of Pocky being rather unsubstantial, these tasted superb with the thick caramel bottom coating providing a delightful set of butterscotch flavours from the outset of each nibble. Though I was fearful that the milk chocolate pattern work on top was purely there for design purposes, it was nice to see the cocoa flavours come through in the latter stages of the development of the melt, which made the overall taste both progressive and multi-dimensional. It was agreed these were the best Pocky that we had tried in ages - they get a ChocolateMission recommendation.

Meiji Mango Chocolate Bar
Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???

I told you the standards were high today and this Meiji Mango Chocolate didn't fail to hit the grade. Peter has been way too kind in sending me the latest Meiji products recently, but this one was without doubt one of the better flavours I have tried as of late. I will admit that mango fruit is a real favourite of mine, though I'm not sure if that was a good or a bad thing for Meiji as whilst this increased the likelihood of me being favourable to this flavour, it also set my expectations pretty high.

This bar came in a 46.0g block form, packaged in a very bright and cool looking box and silver foil protective duo. It was immediately noticeable (and a little worrying!) that the bar was very, very thin and flat in nature, whilst the aromas emanating from it's foil confines had just a minor touch of fruity artificialness. Thankfully all these initial worries were put to bed by the second the chocolate landed on my tongue. Despite it's skinnyness, this bar was one of the most flavoursome and fruity I have ever tasted. The milk chocolate was by all accounts nothing that special, but the mango element was just simply sensational. The realness of the sharp, sweet mango flavours was incredible and surpassed all my prior expectations with its long lasting, refreshing fruity flavours. If you are a fan of mango then I simply can't recommend this chocolate enough - I'll happilly give this the third ChocolateMission recommendation of the day.

Normally I would say im very unfussy when it comes to Kit Kats but even im a little hesitant to try those green tea ones. The only thing encouraging me is that they have to be liked by some people because they have released the flavour a few times now.

Green tea is blatantly flavour of the times. Look at the jlist leaderboard. Its like all green coloured with green tea flavoured oreo things.

Catherine said...

I don't mean to be negative but mango fruit is too acidic for my taste and the green tea would just be bleurgh :O Im open to trying those pocky though. Give me a box of them and I would be happy.

Kit kats, pocky and Meiji. Now there is a line up of reviews I like to see :) Im going to be sad and leave the Pocky and Meiji ones for the weekend.

If we are talking about the KKs then I can't say that these green tea flavours have me salivating over my keyboard :) You have featured so many other better sounding flavours over the last year, green tea just comes off sounding like more of a novelty rather than something that is going to taste nice.

Rachel said...

Sorry but green tea is the last thing on earth that I would flavour my chocolate bars with. I've not tried actual green tea chocolate before but the reason I haven't is because I don't want to lol. The last time I had green tea was the last time I went to our local chinese resturant. I think I managed to take two sips before I put it to one side lol.

Pocky Pocky Pocky =) =) =)

Nothing makes me happier than Pocky. I need to get some of these new ones. You make them sound like they are even better than the normal thin ones.

Hazel said...

Thanks for doing the pocky and kit kat reviews :) Sorry I was nagging on at you about not doing them Lol I should have known you would do some more eventually.

Golden_Touch said...

Do the people in japan see green tea as a normal sort of flavour or do they like us think its out the oridnary?

If you think about it, if they made a normal tea flavour we would still think that it was blooming weird. For all we know the Japanese people could think the very same thing about these green tea flavoured ones.

Duncan said...

Waheeey! I thought you were going to cheat us out of a bits and bobs review again this week, but you have come good :) Nice one Jim. Your have given me a nice bit of reading to do this weekend.

Lauren said...

I don't mind the odd green tea but its nothing something I would ever think you go well with chocolate. The Japanese are just weird.

Nick said...

When I first saw what was in here I thought I would be straight away drawn to the Pocky but now I've read them all it woudl be that mango flavoured Meiji bar I would want to try first.
I'm always buying those packs of juicy mango from waitrose when im on my lunch. If you say the mango in here tastes similar to it does fresh then im all for it. Mango for the win!!!!

Tricky said...

We nearly made it a full week with only British products :P One of these days you will keep it solely Blighty my friend. Its what we all want to see you know.

Craig said...

I still cant believe that those green tea kit kats are best sellers. Jim are you sure those top selling snack tables are correct? Sorry I just find it hard to believe that some things are more popular than others.

Anonymous said...

How are you going to announce the competition winners of the last kk comp? I fully expect to see a pack of cheesey kit kats dropping through my letterbox next week lol.

Daisy said...

The only kind of flavoured tea I will drink is Chai.

Saying that have they ever made a chai tea kit kat? Its naturally sweet anyways so I would think it would work quite well in chocolate.

Dx

Duncan said...

Ahh Jim mate I forgot to ask ..... you said you were going to contact J list last week to make sure they were still selling stuff after the earthquake. Are they still operational? You never got back to us mate.

Ian said...

Have you ever reviewed the coconut pocky? The local asian store near me sold them for a period of time last year and they were very good. I think they must have only bought a limited number though because as soon as they sold out they never got them in again. If you ever get the chance to review them I would do.

JK said...

I bought a new type of mikado the other day. They now have ones that are flavoured with hazelnut. They are pretty damn nice, it would be cool to see a review if you can do one please. Thank you for the reviews today and have a nice weekend.

Peter said...

Why are all the new products they get in Japan so much more interesting than the crap we get here.

You compare what Nestle have done with aero by releasing loads of generic flavours, and then look at Nestle in Japan and what they do with the Kit Kat, they are poles apart. I dont get why a company acts so differently from country to country.

Ana said...

:D
I actually wanted to make a request for the mango bar last week, but I forgot. So it was very nice to see it reviewed today and to read that it is indeed something worth trying. :)

Lisa said...

That bar at the bottom looks so thin Im surprised to hear you say it is a flavourful as you did.
Nice pics on the Kit kats btw. You can kinda see the differenece between them in the colour.

Chris said...

It would be fun to try the green tea kit kats but im not sure I would like them. Its a bit annoying that they have stuck them in such a big bag cause I would be well annoyed if I tried one, found out I hated them, and then had loads leftover. They should have made the packs a lot smaller and cheaper.

Linda said...

Great reviews darl but I don't think that my kids would even go for those kit kats. Getting them to eat green things is usually pretty difficult.

Ganesh said...

Its nice to see you give some higher scores out for Japanese stuff for once. I noticed on some of the last bits and bobs japanese posts that you get on giving scores of around 7 and saying everything was pretty average. All three of these look nice to me so I was glad they got better ratings than that.

Anonymous said...

Yuck green tea white chocolate. The worst possible combo.

Sally said...

Yay well done for including the pocky Jim. I always love seeing how highly you rate them. Most of the flavours are nice but when you get a bad one its mega annoying because they cost so much money for what they are.

I can't think for whatever reason why but there weren't too many volunteers coming forward from my family taste panel when these arrived in our latest J-List sampling box :D Indeed the task was left up to me to try these new green tea flavoured Kit Kats.

.... can you really blame them?

Both flavours were portioned in 13.2g Mini format - small and unsatisfying, but certainly not lacking flavour.

.... Thats so titchy. Are they worth the calories at that size!?

I have little doubt that the more adventurous Kit Kat lover will get a great deal of pleasure from these,

I don't know about that. I love KKs but I am certain I wouldn't like these.

Great reviews love. Have a nice weekend.

Joel said...

Amazing photos today J. Good effort with the Kit kats but you haven't managed to convince me that they ar edible.

LMAO is this an Aprils fools????

Darren said...

Im impressed by the sound of that mnago chocolate. You really do make it sound delicious.

Sorry but im not with you on the green tea kit kat thing :P I think its a case of individual taste lol.

Mark said...

Grrrr if postage wasn't so expensive I would be all over those pocky. Im not that fussed about the other two here but someone needs to start selling pocky in big batches so they can flog it off at a reasonable price.

Anonymous said...

How you can eat those green tea chocolates man. It just sounds wrong, I dont even need to eat some to tell you I wouldn't like it. The mango choc sounds gr8 tho.

Lewis said...

I thought you were going to reviewing more of those tirol chocolates the next time you got some chocolates from Japan?

Lol im not complaining on what we got today, its always fun seeing what mental flavours of kit kats they have been sending you.

Patrick said...

In a perfect world these would be right on my doorstep to try :( Its just so annoying that even if I wanted to try any of these chocolates I would have to wait weeks for them to get here in the post. Its so frustrating.

Francesca said...

I don't get why we have to put up with crappy Mikado whilst the rest of the world gets Pocky.

Its easy to see which ones are the cooler to have. Hopefully one day Pocky will come over and kick them out lol.

Alicia said...

Why was there no nutritional information for the mango chocolate? Its very unlike Japanese products not to have it displayed. Its like the law over there I think.

Ryan said...

Ahhh god dammit. I was so close to putting that meiji bar in my order the other day but for some reason I took it out at the last minute cause I changed my mind :( I knew I should have kept it in there. Great reviews Jim.

Anonymous said...

Are those Kit Kats an Aprilfools?

Emma said...

ewwww how the hell can green tea kit kats get over 8? That is some odd scoring if ever I have seen it.

Sam said...

Brilliant reviews Jim those pocky are crying out for me to buy them :)

I don't think I have ever even tried mango before so I have no idea whether I would like that one :) Lol one thing I do know is that you wont get me anywhere near those green kks. Not a chance fella.

Tim said...

I dont get how so many of you can be so dismissive of the green tea kit kats without even trying them.

I would love to give them a go. You should try everything at least once.

Jonny said...

Another great three reviews mate. Thanks for these. Its always nice to hear what you have to say about any sort of Kit Kat they send you. I don't know if you missed my comment last week, but I asked if you had seen the Japanese chunky Kit Kat they had got up on J list now. A comparison with the UK one would be great.

Beth said...

Im hesistant to say this because I haven't tried them but I really dont like the look of those green tea KitKats. I just dont get this green tea malarky. I know its supposedly good for your health but come on, it tastes horrible.

Kev said...

God if I could afford to buy all these I think I would get all three of them to try. Im not to sure I would like the tea kit kats but just trying them would be an experience in itself. I could justify a one time buy on them lol. Nice one Jim cracking reviews today.

Lot-O-Choc said...

I cant believe the amount of different kit kats that are available over there! love this post though, some really different products.

Hey Guys/Gals

Reading through the comments today we have quite the contrast from the feedback left about the Hotel Chocolat/Luckys goods we had earlier in the week :D

The poor green tea Kit Kats have been on the end of a bit of bashing today :D Not many people seem to fancy them haha!

This is all a little funny for me - I didn't even need to think twice about things before trying them. I think Zotter has risen my resistance to these things. I don't think there are any flavours of chocolate that can shock me now :D

All feedback is good feedback in my opinion. If you guys don't want to see the green tea flavoured chocolates then don't worry message loud and clear.

At least the Pocky and Meiji products seems to be getting a greater seal of approval from you all :D

KIERAN - It would appear that way wouldn't it. The Green Tea chocolates have been around for a while now. Im surprised to see them take off all of a sudden out the blue.

GOLDEN - I think it would be seen as one of the odder flavours they have. You might think the Japanese people are immune to it all by now.

DUNCAN - Don't worry most weeks will have a Bits n Bobs review going forward. I know they are liked by most people so it would be silly not to give them to you guys.

TRICKY - If I just reviewed British chocolates all the time it would be a little boring wouldn't it? For my own sanity I'm going to keep the foriegn bars in the mix.

CRAIG - They are indeed correct fella. It feels hard to believe but people must enjoy trying out the unique Japanese flavours.

ANON - The winner will be announced tomorrow.

DAISY - I've not seen a Chai Tea one before no. I wouldn't mind seeing that flavour created though. Its one of the only flavoured teas I ever drink.

DUNCAN - I did update you all last week chap. They are indeed fully operational.

IAN - Nope never seen or tried the coconut ones. I'm a big fan of coconut flavoured things at the moment so I will be sure to buy some if I get the chance. Leave this with me for the minute.

JK - They are on my radar chap! Watch this space.

ANA - I highly recommend the mango bar. I would love to hear what you think about it.

LINDA - Are you saying that your kids don't like sprouts or bogeys :D :D

JOEL - Nope no April Fools chap. Did anyone get any good ones this year?

LEWIS - I will be reviewing more Tirol in the future. Just watch this space. On the last reviews people were requesting the Kit Kat and Pocky reviews so I catered for them this time around.

ALICIA - I managed to misplace the wrapper and hadn't noted down the NI before. Apologies about that. Perhaps someone could help us out with this?

EMMA - Its just my opinion! Take the scores with a pinch of salt.

JONNY - I will see if J-List fancy sending it along. I hope they do as your right, it would make for a fun comparison wouldn't it.

LOT-O-CHOC - It is pretty crazy isn't it. They don't seem to know when to stop making them though. I don't think they are ever going to run out of ideas for flavours if they continue to make the savoury flavoured ones.

Awesome. If no one else likes the green tea kit kats then you won't even need to bother with holding a competition, and can just send any extras my way :D I have been dreaming about trying them for a year now...

Kate said...

Theres no way I will be buying those Gtea flavoured kit kats though Im well keen on those pocky and mango chocolates. Mango is my favourite fruit and anything made by pocky is always worth a try.
People have been crying out for pocky to be made bigger for ages. Its a bit of a wonder why its taken them so long to just wack another layer of chocolate on top of the other lol.

Anonymous said...

You've reviewed so many chocolates from Japan this year Jim. I hope you are getting them checked for radioactivity these days lol :P

Marv said...

There isn't enough money in the world you could pay me to eat one just one of those green tea things. They sound horrid.

Ross said...

If you look on jlist they have just added a ton load of new oreo green tea products. Green tea must be the big deal in Japan at the moment because its literally every product oreo make (cookies, sticks and pocket snacks) that they have made a green tea flavour for.

Steven_F said...

Im all for putting another layer of chocolate on pocky but why have they never attempted the obvious and put some sort of filling down the middle of the sticks.

I can just imagine a milk chocolate pocky, but with like a salty peanut filling running down the mid. Doing that would be a far cooler way of taking things a step forward imo.

Nigel said...

Lol I should have read this first before I posted on todays news post. I hope Sri Lanka win to.

Cheers

If you were going to do a new Kit Kat review you could of at least picked a better flavour than green tea :( I can't think of a more disgusting flavour they have done than that one.

Bless my Japanese classmate. Her father came to visit, and she obviously remembered our one weird Kit Kats discussion because what did she present me with yesterday but a box of mini matcha Kit Kats! (her dad was very amused when he asked me if I loved matcha especially and I said actually my preference lay with chocolate). It's funny though, I get the impression these are white chocolate, but it's hard to tell since the ingredients are in Japanese.
I basically love these, although only the aftertaste tastes anything like green tea to me. I like how sweet the chocolate is, and the wafer that attempts to have some green tea cut through. And even then it's not strong at all (compared to the 'green tea ice cream' I once had). Nestle are sneaky to put them in mini-packets since it is easy to imagine they don't add up to a bar and thus hard to stop eating them. And last but not least, the color is actually pretty, not as green as a lot of mint chocs. A chocolate seller in the UK could do worse than to open up a Japanese Kit Kat outlet, imho it's ready for the creativity!

Someone said it is yuck white chocolate and green tea (matcha)combo.
But this kind is the most wanted and premium chocolate in Japan. ( I mean the flavor, not kitkat)As a special gift.
It seems that many British people are coward to try new taste. It is not a green tea. It is chocolate. Totally different .
