May 18th: 'Bits n Bobs' Chocolate Chocolate Biscuit, Cookies & Cereal Bars

There have been so many new products in the biscuit, cookies and cereal bars category recently its been hard to keep up with the pace and give them their ChocolateMission reviews. Here are a few products that I have trying out recently, that haven't quite made it on to my 'SNACK OF THE WEEK' weekend shout outs. The reviews are short and sharp so be sure to leave your own thoughts on them.

To my knowledge, Oreo Double Stuff are currently available in Tesco & Asda where you can buy 185.0g packs for £1.30. As you can probably tell from the name, these are simply your standard Oreo cookies with twice the amount of 'stuff' (vanilla flavour creme!) sandwiched in the middle. These have been a long time coming to the UK, but Kraft have finally obliged, and by my ruling they are very welcome. The additional creme may not do much for the taste, but the beefed out creme does provide a little more moistness to the very dry biscuits, and it does make them seem like a more satisfying product compared to the originals. The only problem you guys might have with these, is that like myself you may find yourself never being able to look at the original Oreos in quite the same way - they just look a little meagre now I'm used to these.

The Mcvitie's Hobnobs Medley range was first featured on the site back in July 2010 - See HERE when I reviewed the chocolate & raisin variant in the range. Although this peanut variant was released at that very same time, the distribution of it was rather low, and it was only recently that Tesco stores actually started carrying this part of the line. Described as 'biscuit & cereal bar with peanuts & milk chocolate chips', I was excited that this variant might be more to my liking than my previous raisin experience. The packaging certainly looked a bit more suitable for Hobnobs with the use of the orange colouring to indicate the peanut flavour, though I was a little disappointed to find it was hard to pick out the peanuts aesthetically when looking at the real thing. Essentially these turned out to be nice enough cereal bars, however they struggled with the same issues that the raisin variant did with the influence of both the biscuit and peanut contents lacking cut through against the syrupy oat base. As I said, nice enough, but couldn't of been better with a greater presence of chocolate and peanuts.

Perhaps I was being a little presumptuous, but when I saw the press release from Fox's about the launch of his Amber range, but I was expecting them to be positioned as a premium tier offering to their usual 'Chunky' cookies. You can imagine I was relatively surprised then when I saw the entire line on a £1.00 deal in Tesco - a much cheaper option than the 2 for £2.50 deal running across the 'Chunky' cookies. Looking at both packaging and presentation of all three Ambers variants there was very little disparity, though it was the Praline flavour that caught my eye. Billed as 'golden honeycomb biscuit, baked with praline and dipped in chocolate' I thought these sounded like they had great promise stepping in to a 'praline' territory not ventured in to often by the likes of McVitie's etc. Unfortunately when it came to the tale of the taste, the praline element didn't come through strongly - a blind taste test on some colleagues totally proved this when they failed to register nut content of any sort. The taste was dominated by a strong golden syrup influence, with the oat and milk chocolate very much secondary players in the background. The taste was resultingly very, very sweet - too much so in my honest opinion. These weren't bad biscuits, but they didn't deliver the praline experience either promised or desired.

After a few demoralising product reviews from M&S recently I have been a little less willing to check out their confectionery range, though these chocolate coated pretzels did catch my eye when I saw them instore. At first it was the rather ghastly green colour of the packaging that got my attention, however the premise of chocolate pretzels encouraged me enough to part with £1.49 for a bag. The whole area of chocolate covered salted snacks is a massively untapped area of the market here UK what with Nestle Flipz being a sore loss from our shelves a very long time ago. I thought this presented M&S with a real opportunity to offer something different here, but unfortunately they didn't quite manage to deliver the product I had in mind. Cutting the long story short, these pretzels were coated in a thin layer of no better than average, sweet tasting milk rooted sugary chocolate. The potential of the savoury pretzels was unfortunately not taken full advantage of - they were neither flavoursome or salty enough to really deliver the contrast of flavours that these needed to give - if anything they just tasted like rather bland biscuits. These could have been so much better and I wish they were - a real opportunity missed out on by M&S here.

Unlike most of the others featured today, these Fox's Classic Originals weren't so much a new product, but more the case of an existing product being added to the shelves of one of my local stores. Indeed, coinciding with the rest of the latest shelf update, these 'milk chocolate covered cream filled honeycomb biscuit bars' popped up in my local Tesco. A £1.00 expenditure bought me a multipack of seven bars - just about enough for me to dish out to the people sitting round me at work. As you can hopefully see from the photos, the standard of packaging and overall presentation was really rather standard - the cream poking out between the biscuit pieces was at least somewhat appealing. General consensus when it came to taste test was one of disappointment, with no fewer than 5 out of 7 saying they wouldn't buy again (myself included!). The main point of issue with these chocolate biscuit bars were that the terrible milk chocolate meant they were ridiculously sugary tasting, and both the biscuit and cream elements added little or nothing to experience. These were fundamentally bland tasting sugary biscuits - I wouldn't recommend.

Ok there are just way too many yummy looking snacks for one morning here. I wish I had an oreo or medley bar to dip in my tea right now :-)

Im glad you called out the foxs originals as being poor. They used to be a lot better from what I remember when I was younger. The cream in the middle used to actually taste of something, where as now its just flavourless and pointless even being there. I could swear they used to be bigger than they make them now. You could say that about almost anything if were honest mind you.

Kim said...

This is a proper bits and bobs post isn't it lol :) I love the randomness of it all.

Justin said...

I have to say I'm disappointed reading up on those chocolate pretzels from M&S. I do like getting my lunch there every so often and Im a sucker for buying the bags of sweets and snacks they put by the tills. I was sorta hoping you were going to say they were really nice so I had an excuse to buy them lol. I can see myself just buying them anyway to be honest with you.

Emma said...

My family buy the odd pack of biscuits but we never buy things like cereal bars or chocolate biscuit bars anymore. I think I will ask mummsy to buy some oreos but I doubt she will comply because she doesn't like them. Shes forever telling me they are sold out of them but I think she just prefers her boring rich teas.

Louise said...

Oreo double stuff FTW. Honestly man I haven't had any cookies that I have loved so much for a long time. I'm obsessed by them at the moment. I could eat them all day long.

David said...

Its funny you should put those ambers and the double stuff oreos in the same review because I was choosing between them at the weekend. I only wanted to buy one pack so I plumped with the oreos. Its good to see the scores justify my decision now. I will likely try the ambers at some point because I like other foxs cookies, but im really happy with the oreo double stuff. Lol we have nearly finished the pack already.

Mark said...

Awesome reviews Jim!!! I've only tried one of these though and thats the Medley bars. I remember being well excited about some hobnob chocolate bars when you posted about them in one of your news updates. They have been a let down all round really haven't they :( Its a crying shame. They should have hooked up with mars or cadburys or something and made a chocolate biscuit bar with hobnob biscuit pieces. That would have been tops.

Stu said...

I keep noticing you say you are buying all these new things in Tesco. Every time I look for anything in my one I can never find it for weeks after I see it on here.

I think mine must be rubbish at getting all the new products in. Its so annoying. I just wish I could buy them as quickly as you can.

Anonymous said...

Have you got any Heavenly Cakes reviews coming? You haven't reviewed a single thing from them this year :( :(

Beth said...

When I was younger and used to take packed lunchs to school I used to ask my mum to buy all these sort of things when they first came out. Now im at college though I buy my lunches from the canteen so I never get to eat these sort of snacks anymore. The only ones that greatily interest me anyway are the double stuff Oreo. They are so underrated in this country, I think its because they are american.

Hey J

Have you been watching the playoff finals this week? It's been interesting seeing whos qualified huh!? I wish we had playoff games to determine who goes down from the premiership. Can you imagine how epic those games would be?

Cool reviews today btw. Loving your thoughts on the Fox's originals I would say you are spot on with them. They aren't bad or anything they are just generic beyond belief aren't they. I wouldn't expect anything more or less from the ones the supermarkets make themselves, they are everybit as average. Good review of the double stuff oreo aswell. I bought a pack back with me last time and some friends and I demolished the lot in minutes of opening them.

Cheers
N

One thing I can highly recommend to you Jim are the Toblerone cookies you can buy from the tesco bakeries. If you get them after they have just come out the oven when they are still warm and soft you are on a winner winner chicken dinner. I wouldn't buy them if its nearer the end of the day though mate. Like all those cookies do they go rock solid within like a few hours and aren't as nice

Carla said...

Where do I sign up for the petition for more bits and bobs style posts?
You haven't done one of these for ages, its about time you gave us another :) If you need any suggestions I got a list as long as my arm with chocolate biscuits I want to see you give a score.

Anonymous said...

No wonder you have such difficulty keeping up Jim. The amount of new products being banded about the place is incredible.

Karen said...

As much as I love Oreos I wish they would just be done with it and just make chips ahoy available over. As nice as some of the recent shop bought cookies are Chips Ahoy are different class. Last time I was in america I got to try these special soft baked ones. Omg they were heaven.

Hazel said...

I've thought a few times of making my own chocolate pretzels using some nice chocolate like from Lindt. It would be easy enough to do, all you would have to do is melt the chocolate down, dip in the pretzels and then leave them to chill. I think I could handle most of that :) perhaps not the leaving to chill bit though lol. I don't think I could trust myself to do that.

Wendy said...

Can't praline just mean chopped nuts? I don't think it necessarilly has to mean the truffle like stuff you get in chocolates. I think its a loose term that can represent nuts in general so I hope you haven't scored them low just because they don't have a truffle like filling to them.

Anonymous said...

Thumbs up to the bits and bobs mate. Loving your pictures, they never fail to make me feel uber hungry.

Tina said...

Jim do you know if the mcvities temptations are any good? I have seen them online but I couldn't find them when I was in tesco.

The white chocolate ones sound decent but I was thinking that these praline cookies were going to be nice and from what you say they don't even taste of nuts.

Steven_F said...

My ratings for the ones I have had

Oreo DS - 7/10
Fox's Original - 5/10
Medley bar (red one) 4/10

The Amber I haven't come across yet but im sure I will do some time. I haven't tried that particular medley bar but I did manage to get some of the red coloured ones. I didn't think they were all that to be honest with you. I love hobnobs but I couldn't really taste them in with the rest of the other cereals. I would rather just buy some hobnobs to be honest lol.

Darren said...

Jim if you are taking requests at the mo can I ask you review some of the new GU puddings that are coming out please. I know it doesn't fall within your usual chocolate remitt but you used to say that about biscuits didn't you :P Go on lad.

Wendy said...

Can someone please point me in the direction of a supermarket apart from Tesco that selling the oreo double creams? My local Tesco is being refurbed so its not open at the moment. Im very keen on trying these double creams though.

Golden_Touch said...

Hey Jim I've just seen that HC have released a whole lot of new slab flavours for the summer and some of them sound yummy (tiramisu espec). Is there any chance you might be able to do us some reviews soon?

Ganesh said...

Was it ever in doubt that Oreos with double filling were going to be great? I think not.

Lee said...

Now you can buy ones with double the cream are the original oreos now cheaper? You would have to expect they have had to make them so now. Essentially they are a worse product now.

Neil said...

Hey Jim. Have you seen the new thorntons chocolate that has just come out?
Its on their website at the moment - its dark chocolate flavoured with rose it sounds intriguin. I would appreciate a review if you can do it. http://www.thorntons.co.uk/p/Chocolate%20Collections_Chocolate%20Blocks/60061.html
Its limited edition so get going man.

Brian said...

I don't see the point of anyone trying to flog biscuits or the like for anything more than a quid now. I can't remember the last time I spent more than that on a pack of biscuits. If one thing isn't being sold for a pound a decent enough alternative always is. Its not like you don't have loads to choose from either.

KP said...

I was going to ask you to review the toffee jammy dodgers but then I realised they don't have chocolate in. Lol I get confused to what you allow yourself to review now. I swear you once promised you would never review biscuits. I for one am glad you changed your mind :P Good decision.

Daisy said...

Are you going to review the new cadburys chocos Jim? The are a new product you haven't done yet. It can't be because you haven't seen them lol. Nearly every shop I go in has big stand of them by the tills.

Michael said...

Looks like you picked the wrong flavour of the ambers to try. I bought the caramel ones and thought they were brill. Give them a chance Jim, don't lose faith in them entirely.

Yasmine said...

Although you have given some of these crappy ratings I fancy trying a few of these even more now.

The oreos and ambers better watch out. I have them both on my shopping list for this weekend now ;) I might even buy some of those hobnob cereal bars if they are still cheap. Thanks Jim.

Alicia said...

Those medley bars are quite low in calories. If I had to pick one out of all of these though I think I would go for just the one oreo cookie :) Sometimes its nicer to have less of a nice thing than it is to have more of something that doesn't taste as nice.

Max said...

Slowly but surely we are getting all of the Oreos woop woop. It can't be too long before the next big one they have to release are some of the limited edition flavours they have done like the peanut butter and mint ones (lol not together!!!). It's been a slow and painful process but there is no where left to go now.

Rachel said...

Euuuuuuugh the Foxs original thing makes me shudder. My mum used to buy them EVERY single week thinking me and my sisters used to like them. They are the most boring chocolate biscuits in the world. I cant bring myself to look at them anymore. She honestly bought them for years even when we said we didn't like them.

Rxxx

Steve said...

In most places its cheaper to buy double stuff oreos at the moment than it is to buy normal ones. Lol it sucks if you don't like the cream but if you do its win win all round :)

Mary said...

What a shame those amber biscuits sounded like they had a lot more potential than this. I still might try them out but only if I can find them on a decent deal. Thanks for the warning.

my said...

You cant beat crumbled oreos on Walls cream of cornish ice cream. I can't wait until I can get my mitts on those double stuff. Yum yum =)

Claire said...

I enjoyed your reviews but im disappointed reading that none of these apart from the oreos are really worth getting excited about. I thought these hobnob chocolate bars had real potential but going by all your reviews they have been on the whole disappointing. Ah well, Im sure we wont have to suffer them for long. Like most of these things they will be here and gone before we know it.

Richard said...

According to mysupermarket you can buy these double stuff oreos in pretty much all the supermarkets now. Cheap as chips for 80p I think.

Mhairi said...

Add me in to the oreo double stuff love in. They are lush.

B said...

Jim I just want to reiterate the point that if you ever need any help tasting any of these snacks them I am more than happy to recieve anything you want to pass on.

I understand this must be such a hard task trying all these snacks all the time. Just so you know I will happily help you out with this :)

what ur do is take 2 double stuff oreos, half them carefully and put the sides with the cream still on together to make a quad stuffed oreo.

Hi All,

Brief response tonight as I'm in a rush to finish off my day work and make home in time for the apprentice :D Priorities huh!? :D

Thanks for all the kind words to everyone about the reviews and the photos today. Going back over all these I can only again highly recommend the Oreo Double Stuff - they are fantastic, fantastic specimens.

JUSTIN - M&S always get me with the stuff they put by the tills haha! Its lucky I don't get to shop there that often anymore.

STU - Some parts of the country seem faster to pick up new products that others. Its all a bit random isn't it.

ANON - I do indeed have some Heavenly Cakes reviews in the pipeline. All I can say is watch this space :D

NIGEL - I actually have a tidy sum of money on Reading to get promoted this year. If my bet comes in, I'm actually in for a hell of a windfall. I'm not sure about your idea for playoffs for relegation. That is essentially what we have this weekend anyways.

CARLA - There is not petition but thanks for the kind words.

HAZEL - If you ever make any homemade ones make sure you send some my way please :D

WENDY - I think praline can just be 'milled' nuts indeed. Its a shame the ambers just didn't taste of nuts at all.

TINA - I haven't sampled the McVitie's Temptations yet to be honest with you. I will let you know if I do - you will obviosuly get a review some time.

WENDY - Asda and Saimsburys both list them on their website (Oreo DS)

GOLDEN - I got a package from Hotel Chocolat this week. Reviews are inbound don't you worry about that!!

LEE - I expect them to stay the same price chap. Not everyone wants double the cream you know.

NEIL - All I will say is make sure you log on the site on Monday ;)

DAISY - Review coming soon. Next week I expect.

B - I will bare this in mind :D Funnilly enough you aren't the only one to offer these sort of services to me :D :D Haha!

Thanks everyone - I'm glad to see Bits n Bobs is continuing to go down well.

Great reviews with brilliant photography. I love it when you do these smaller reviews as you always include so much variety. Have a pat on the back Jim. Thank you so much for these all.

Cadburybiscuitlover said...

The oreos look wicked but my favourite biscuits at the moment are the cadburys crunchie ones. I haven't looked to see if you have reviewed them yet but if I were giving out a rating they would definitely get a score in the high 8s. I was hoping to try the turkish delight flavoured ones but I can't find them anywhere. I wasn't so up on bournville.

Gaz said...

I like the packaging of the ambers but if your review of them is right they are a big disappointment huh? Fox's cookies used to be really bad but when they relaunched the chunky ones I started to really like them. My favourites are the chunky fruit and nut btw.

Jess said...

The medley bars are so average I really wouldn't recommend any bother with them. I've even tried two different kinds of them (incl this peanut one!) and I didn't think much of them. It was just like a smaller, rubbisher tracker bar. Trackers always have, and always will be the kings of the cereal bars.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know where they are going to be selling oreo double stuff? My brother loves them he would be so grateful if I was able to get him some.

James said...

Jim I just got sent this link by a friend http://www.northernvirginiamag.com/gut-check/2011/05/12/nabisco-to-unleash-the-double-triple-stuff-oreo/ TRIPLE STUFF OREOS I kid you not. Its the original double stuff but with a layer of the chocolate cream stuff aswell. Amazing scenes.

Joel said...

Thanks for the bits and bobs review Jimbo. You know we all really like them, please keep up the good work.

Andy said...

I can't even remember the last time I bought a pack of biscuits. I would be up for trying some of the doubled up oreos though, I haven't had an oreo for years since I last went to America.

Are they the same as the ones you get over there? Have you ever done any sort of comparison between the two?

George said...

Got to get me some Oreo Double Stuff now!!!!!! I didn't even realise they were out in the UK now. Thanks for the heads up JCM.
Thank you for all the mini reviews today Jim it's always nice when you throw in these ones every so often to mix it all up a bit. You must start fancying yourself as an expert of all kinds of snacks now. You seem like you are game reviewing anything you come across with chocolate in now, have you ever considered doing some milkshake reviews like for frijj?

Emily said...

Thanks for the reviews hun. My mum is never adventurous enough to every buy any different biscuits. She has swapped between a selection of the same three for as long as I can remember. Digestives, bourbon cremes or custard creams. I think if I asked her to buy some oreo double stuff she wouldn't have a clue what I was on about lol.

Pattra said...

Are you going to be reviewing any of these new summer chocolates that are in the new hotel chocolat ads you have up? Some of the new 'knickerbox' little things looks tremendous. I would love to see any reviews on them before I have to part with my own monies :) If you could just give me some sort of idea which you are doing and which you aren't that would be brill.

Linz said...

By the way - Oreos are NOT vegetarian :( For any unsuspecting veggies out there who didn't realise. It's not fair really, in America (the worst country ever for vegetarianism!) Oreos are not only veggie but actually vegan! And here they just stick some baby cow in there for a laugh. Why?! Clearly they can be made perfectly well without it, so why do it? I hate Kraft for this. :(

Phil said...

@Linz - Oreos not vegetarian? What?! And I just had a couple of the Double Stuff ones, enjoying them very much. I can't see anything on the ingredients to indicate they're not, do you know what they contain exactly?

Jim said...

OSCAR - Haha wouldn't that be quad stuffed? I think that might be a little too much filling even for me.

ZEDDY - Funnily enough I have a pack of them in the post from AmericanSoda! I will get them involved in an upcoming bits and bobs review. Cheers for the heads up - I had no idea you still read the site.

CADBURYBISCUIT... - The turkish ones are still around. I saw them just yesterday in Tesco. Just keep a look out I'm sure you will come across them eventually.

JESS - I haven't had a Tracker for a long time. They are all time classics though aren't they.

ANON - They are in Tesco and Asda currently.

JAMES - I will post that on the news page. I think triple cream might even be a bit much for me.

ANDY - I've never done a US/UK comparison but I did a Japanese/UK comparison once. That is in the archives under the Nabisco label!

GEORGE - Who knows what will appear on Snack of the Week in the future. I can't see me doing milkshake reviews on their own for the time being though. I have way too much chocolate to review.

PATTRA - I will have an update on this tomorrow ... in short yes :D I got a whole summer package from them yesterday!

LINZ/PHIL - Hmmm what is all this about? How can Oreos not be vegeterian? Linz can you tell us what it is they contain please.

Thanks all

JIM
