May 25th: 'Bits n Bobs' Cadbury Biscuits, Cakes, Cookies & Chocos 2011

Cadbury have been pumping out so many new products this year it's almost been hard for me to keep up to date with them all. In an attempt to get somewhat close to covering them all off on the site I have today lumped some of the latest ones in to a single 'Bits n Bobs' post. If you guys have any opinions on any of the products being featured today I would encourage you to add your thoughts via the comments functionality.

----
Cadbury BiscBits Orange Crunch
Kcal 120 Fat 5.4g Fat(sats) 2.9g Carbs 16.5g (per 7 biscuits)

After a none to impressive first look at the Cadbury BiscBits range I don't know what quite compelled me to give this Orange Crunch variety a try (See Caramel Crisp review HERE). It must have been the faint hope of these being far superior to them, and the ever apparent 'New' labelling placed on the packaging that convinced me, as I indeed part with my single pound coin for a 110.0g bag. Described as 'orange flavoured chocolate biscuits covered in milk chocolate', these looked more appealing than the previous Caramel Crisp biscuits did as they lacked the scuffed, worn natured look of that product previous. Unfortunately taste wise they proved to be just as poor and it wasn't long before I realised these were just another cheap, cheerful Cadbury product that had recieved little or no thought put in to it. In line with expectations the chocolate was sweet and sugary in taste, though the overriding flavour influence came from the orange flavouring which had the most generic of tastes imagineable. It was neither zesty, refreshing or real tasting - just a real run of the mill sweet tasting dull orange flavouring. I'm sure the sheer blandness wont go as far as offending anyone, but I personally wouldn't recommend these.

----
Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocos
Kcal 250 Fat 14.1g Carbs 27.0g (per roll)

Unlike some of the products being featured today these were given some exposure time in the press before they released in order to create some hype (See HERE). As referred to in the article these aren't exactly a 'New' idea from Cadbury as similar products have been on sale in the likes of Finland and Australia for a fair while now. To my knowledge though, this is the first time they have appeared in the UK and I'm glad to say they are a welcome addition to the Cadbury portfolio. As unexciting as this sounds the roll pack simply contained 11 Dairy Milk chocolate pieces that were no bigger or smaller than Rolos. Being this size meant they were the perfect for just popping out the packet and placing on the tongue for a quick, sharp burst of creamy Dairy Milk lovelyness. The roll pack format is an incredibly convenient way of getting your chocolate fix whilst 'on-the-move' (wanky term I know :D ) and I'm happy to say that the Dairy Milk chocolate experience isn't altered in any manner from the switch from bar to 'choco'. These aren't the most exciting of new products but you will be more than happy with what you get here.

----
Cadbury Chunky Cookies Milk, Dark & White
Kcal 115 Fat 6.3g Fat(sats) 3.4g Carbs 12.7g (per cookie)

Can Cadbury make cookies? Well of course they can ... well they could try anyway :D If you have peeked at the taste score you will probably have been surprised by another average rating sitting in the region of 7.0 out of 10. How could it be that these Cadbury cookies scored lower than average!? For me there were two fundamental problems I had with these. Firstly, like the aromas suggested, the actual taste wasn't Cadbury like at all. The butter, wheat and brown sugar noted biscuit bases were delightfully tasty with the added raft of sweet chocolate flavours, but to my experienced Cadbury taste buds the chocolate taste wasn't half as creamy as is typical with the brand. My second real issue was the billing of white, milk and dark chocolate all in one. This simply wasn't delivered on, and there was no evidence of any differentiation in impact the taste from the white chocolate or dark chocolate chunks. Overlook all this negativity and I will concede that a single cookie made a nice afternoon snack paired with a coffee but unfortunately the negative aspects did outweight the good ones.

----
Cadbury Chocolate Mallows
Kcal 55 Fat 2.2g Fat(sats) 1.2g Carbs 8.1g (per mallow)

'20 mallow teacakes covered with milk chocolate' - is there anything these guys wont try now? Burton's Foods have certainly expanded the breadth of Cadbury's portfolio over the last few years and this has included putting the Cadbury name to these mallow teacake biscuits. When I was lad, Tunnocks Teacakes (See HERE) were the only ones that I ever ate - I never thought any of the supermarket or even Marks & Spencer offerings could compare. The weakness of the Tunnocks ones however I always believed to be the chocolate, so there was at least a part of me open to seeing how good these Cadbury ones were. What I realised upon eating these were that whilst the chocolate standard was a step up from Tunnocks, the inner marshmallow and biscuit bases were far, far poorer. The mallow had a dense, foamy feel in the mouth and lacked any sort of definitive flavours as did the chalky biscuit base below. Whilst the chocolate was superior it could not make up for the poorness of the other two constituents, as it was so thinly portioned it mostly got lost within the bland mallow anyway. Unless you are looking for cheap fodder for sharing occasions like kids parties I suggest you keep clear of these. Cadbury might want to start consider some of the products they are putting their name to.

You might aswell give up trying to keep up with all the new products Jim I think you are on to a loser if you attempting that. You should just try picking the best out of them, you should be able to have a good idea which are worth trying and which aren't. I knew before I read your scores that you would give high marks to the chocos and average/low to the rest.

Kim said...

Hmmm the biscuit and cookies don't sound too bad but the scores aren't exactly inspiring or filling me with an urge to go buy them. Cool reviews Jim. Great photos as per usual :)

Terry said...

There are loads of new cadburys biscuits out which I spotted last week, has anyone here tried them? Im talking about the rich tea and digestives copies, not the crunchie or the caramel ones.

David said...

Jim have you seen the adopted 'clothes off' ad with cadburys talking about the chocos at the end? its a clever idea doing that. Everyone knows the music is for cadburys now.

Steven_F said...

Cadbury are getting like thorntons with their mixture of wheat and chaff these days. I don't want to moan that much because I prefer them to make new products than just doing nothing at all. I do find it a little annoying that some of these aren't better though. It can't be that hard making orange flavoured biscuits. I think there is also a mint variety on sale in some places.

Kieran said...

Thanks for the scores and pictures Jim. Its useful hearing what out of these are worth trying and what aren't. Cheers mate.

Warren said...

Cripes there are quite a few disappointing ones in here from the purple people. I think they are some of the lowest scores I've seen for cadburys on this website. Normally they get thumbs up all round from you Jim boy ;)

Paul said...

Tunnocks>Cadbury.
Its a shame we all know which one has all the money. Last I heard Tunnocks was in serious financial trouble.

Daisy said...

Have you considered reviewing some of the Cadburys ice creams? They do these amaze crunchie blast lolly ice creams nom nom nom. Please review them.

Dx

Justin said...

I had my first pack of cadbury choccos the other day and I realised just how long it had been since I last ate some dairy milk chocolate. I know there are much better chocolates out there but for what it is I don't think anyone can criticise dairy milk. Its just sooooooo nice and creamy. I swear if they ever changed the recipe people would see straight through it. Its just so distinct there isn't anything like it.

Andy said...

Quality reviews mate. It must be hard for you keeping track of all these new ones. Do you get samples of everything? Your postman isn't going to be a fan of yours if you do. Lol his sack must be full daily with chocolates for you. I would be so jealous if I was the one deliverying them all the time.

Becci said...

Thanks for the reviews J. I agree with you about the chocos. They aren't exciting or anything but they are nice to just have about if you fancy just an ickle bit of choc.

Charlie said...

Where do we go if we to see something in particular reviewd? I want to see a post on the new galaxy bites that have come out. How do I go about that? Will this comment be seen by the right person (aka jim)

Anonymous said...

When is the next chocolate mission competition coming up? it feels like forver and a decade since you last treated us to one mate. You don't want to be losing your readers now do ya :P

Robert said...

Wow im surprised to see some of the scores come in so low for some of these. I would of hoped for better from the orange crunch biscuits. I just looked at the review of the caramel crunch ones you did aswell and they didn't make the grade either did they :S

KP said...

If I had free reign to try any of these I would start with the biscbits then the chocos and then finally the cookies.

I don't fancy the marshmallows at all. I know they will just be cheap and nasty to there is no point trying them.

Drew said...

Anyone see the pattern here????
The one thing that is Dairy Milk gets the high marks. The other three which are just 'cadbury milk chocolate' get far lower. Conincedence? You would expect not!!

Nigel said...

Hey J

Even as a liverpool fan I enjoyed that Neville testimonial last night. It was good to see a pro like him get his just desserts. Lol I still hate him though :P

Top top reviews today. I always love seeing a good cadburys post and its even better when you oblige with a four in one lol. I think out of all of these the likelyhood is I will just try the chocos. I'm a big fan of chocolate tea cakes but its going to be tunnocks for me there. I don't think there is a single thing you could do to make me swap.

Cheers
N

I think this will shut up some of your critics who say you favour cadburys over people like cadburys. I never believed you did for a minute btw.

Kev said...

Cool reviews Jim. Chocolate mission has been taken over by purple packaging lol.

Anonymous said...

The chocos are amazing. I love them so much I bought ten rolls yesterday and ate three already :) :) :) :)

Peter said...

Everyone is generalising these as being made by the one company. One would expect that Burtons foods at least made the cookies and the mallows. Its not all the same people making these products. They just all carry the cadbury branding.

Ian said...

Whats happened to Bits and bobs this week? Its cool seeing this stuff if you like cadburys chocolate but if you are like me and don't like it then the usefulness of your post today is lacking Jim. Sort it out mate. Give the people what they want.

Ryan said...

I think cadbury are one of the only British brands where we could say they have started tipping the scales of quantity and quality in the wrong way. I don't know what people will think about this but I think they are potentially doing too many new products now and not focusing on them being ones thats are up to standard.

Anonymous said...

Were many of these sent to you as samples Jim or did you have to buy them?

Richard said...

I would consider trying all of these if I saw them decently priced. You can often find all of these sort of things on a deal at some point so I'm sure there will be ample opportunity for me to give them a go someday. Thanks mate.

Mark said...

Do we know if those biscuit things are going to be made for small packs yet? If they are I will hold off buying them until then. Its so annoying when they just bring them out in massive bags. Its so annoying if end up not liking them.

Lewis said...

I normally keep on top of everything to do with cadburys but even I hadn't heard of a few of these. I've not ever seen the cookies or the orange crunch things before Jim, thanks for bringing them up.

Carla said...

A whole post dedicated to Cadburys eh!? What have they done to be so special and deserving of such a feature?

I hadn't realised they have come out with so many new products recently. If you tot them up its actually pretty incredible the amount that have arisen lately.

Eric said...

The choccos are everywhere now, you can't miss them. I haven't bought a pack yet but I like the idea of them as they would be easy to carry round.

The only potential problem I can see from them is that they could get well messy if they got warm in your pocket. Lol you could end up with a pocket full of chocolate gloop in the summer time.

Jamie said...

Lol Ganesh has a good point I don't think anyone will be accusing you of favouring Cadburys over any other chocolate maker any time soon - some of these ratings are very low for them.

Cadbury cookies!? Who? What? Where? When?
Whey did they not tell us about such an important thing :-) I can imagine these would be pretty nice if they can make them with a sound cookie basis.
It's a bit annoying to hear that they don't manage to get the white and dark chocolate in on things though.

Emily said...

Bits and bobs cadburys style .... I fully approve :-) HIGH FIVE!!!!!!! (sorry I watched Borat yesertday)

Fran said...

I had a carton of dairy milk chocolate milk yesterday evening. It was one of the nicest drinks ever, perfect straight from the fridge, I'm going back to spar to buy some more today.

Phil said...

I'm certainly not surprised about the Bisc Bits. I've seen them in Morrisons and nothing compels me to try them.
I've tried the Chocos, and they are nice. They remind me a lot of Rolos (which are AWFUL now). It would be nice if they did a caramel version but I suppose they'd be accused of ripping off Rolo.
I'm with you on the Cadbury cookies Jim, they are disappointing. I find it's common though with triple chocolate cookies that you can never taste the difference between the types of chocolate, at least in mass produced ones. Give me Fox's any day, much nicer :)

Phil said...

PS - you may have noticed I'm not commenting as much recently Jim. I've been a bit bogged down with various things so only really comment when something peaks my interest. Still check to see what's going on though :)

Ana said...

First product: I'm a sucker for anything that promises a citrus experience, so the "orange" in the name immediately caught my eye. Yet the second picture... I've lost count of how many times I've been disappointed by similarly looking biscuits :(

Second product: Probably the most tempting one today.

Third product: They remind me of Merba's Triple Chocolate Cookies (my picture) which I actually enjoyed.

Fourth one: Yuck, marshmallows!

Ana said...

PS - Any Zotter hand-scooped bars reviews to be expected soon?

Alan said...

Well Ive tried the choccos and they are very nice. Ive seen the Biscuit things but not got round to trying them yet, the orange ones appeal to me most as i like orange things. The cookies look nice aswell, maybe worth a go if theyre on offer. Ive had the mallows before, but Im not a big mallow fan so neither these or the Tunnocks really do anything for me lol

@Phil, Ive never been a Rolos fan, but it doesnt surprise me that theyre not very good anymore. I know they altered the centre from harder chewy caramel to runny caramel then released a special edition with the 'original centre' lol. I just wish Nestle wouldnt meddle with everything they make, to the detriment of the bar. From Yorkies to Milkybars theyve all gone down hill.

Hi All,

How are we already midway through the week hey? Wednesday already - too much to do with not enough time these days. The story of my life.

Thanks to you all for the feedback/comments. Cadbury are taking a bit of a pasting today huh!?

I might have to change the name this one to Cadbury Superpost and not Bits n Bobs. You have chaught me out there guys :D

In regards to what some of you have written about picking and choosing certain products and not trying to review them all, I think you are right. Posting the amount I am it is too hard trying to keep ahead with everything they make. I will just try and keep it to the ones that I think are most interesting now.

Terry - I saw those in Sainsburys. I will give them a try and perhaps feature them as snack of the week if they meet the grade.

David - They've tagged it on the end haven't they! It was a great way to do it I think. Build brand association with the song first and then drive home the Chocos messaging. Very clever.

Daisy - I'm still reluctant to start doing ice cream reviews. There would be a conflict of interest for me I'm afraid.

Charlie - I have already reviewed the Galaxy Bites ... check the archives for two mondays ago :D Oh and yes if you leave a comment 'JIM' will see it :D haha thats me :D :D

Anon - The next competition is going to be coming your way very very shortly. Keep your eyes peeled on here and Twitter, I'm not sure what platform im going to be launching it on just yet.

Drew - Its hardly a surprising thing to see is it. Who knows whether the difference between the two recipes is actually that much - taste wise it seems to be.

Nigel - It was a good spectacle wasn't it. He deserved a good send off and he got one. I was pleased for him. Thanks for the nice words about the reviews. I agree with you on the Tunnocks thing. I would need a lot of convincing to switch to a different tea cake brand if i wasn't doing it for review purposes.

Peter - Good point chap. Burtons make the tea cakes and the cookies as far as I'm aware.

Anon - None of these were samples.

Mark - No idea if they are being made for smaller packs. I wouldn't be surprised if they did turn up in some different format one day though.

Carla - They produced a ton load of products thats what made them deserving of a superpost :D They might be regretting making some of them now though haha.

Ganesh/Jamie - I wasn't aware I had been accused of favouring Cadbury. I must have missed that :D

Colin - Indeed they never announced anything did they. I was surprised to see them when I found them on the shelf I have to say.

Emily - Haha Borat is hilarious isn't it.

Phil - If I were you chap I wouldn't bother with the Biscbits. There are bigger fishes to fry in my honest opinion. Fox's cookies are damn good aren't they - not so much the recent Ambers mind you. I think they dropped the ball with them. No worries about the commenting, its always best just to post when you think right anyway. I wouldn't want you posting just for the sake of it :D

Ana - Don't you have something remarkably similar to Chocos in Europe? Like I said in the review I know there is a very similar product on sale in Finland. Zotter reviews? Funny you should mention them! Next week you might want to check the site on Friday ;)

Alan - I would welcome your views on the Biscbits if you are dead certain about trying them. I wouldn't want to recommend them but interested to hear what you have to say nonetheless.

Thanks for the comments and nice words etc etc I'm off to update the news page now!

I had no idea about most of these though I have seen the chocolate roll packs around. I don't get the idea of them myself. I think they are just as portable as a chocolate bar, its not as if they are smaller or anything.

I think they should have made them mint flavoured so they are like chocolate mints. That would have made them worth buying. I don't see the point of them otherwise but thats just me.

Alicia said...

Seriously someone needs to put a ban on the chocos. They are so sooooo moreish they are bad lol. In theory they should be easier to eat in smaller doses but I found I just ate the entire pack just as fast as I would a normal bar. Don't blame me for being greedy either :P I have very good self control normally, just not when Dairy Milk is on offer lol.

Darren said...

Fair play to Cadburys here. Not everything they make is going to please everyone now is it. I think as long as a fair proportion of what they make is decent then we shouldn't complain. to me it looks like you have 2 out of 4 which look at least ok - those being the cookies and the chocos. The other 2 might need a bit of work by the sounds of things lol.

Patrick said...

Great reviews Jim. Thanks for putting them all in one instead of drip feeding them. I think you should do this more often when you can, I don't see the point in you holding reviews back for the sake of it. You have said you have done that in the past haven't you.

Louise said...

Has anyone spotted the flake allure yet? Im so excited about trying it. They haven't done anything with the flake range for years now. I do love a good flake me.

Michael said...

The review of the mallow tea cakes hardly comes as a surprise. Tunnocks are just champions when it comes to them, they can't ever be beaten as they have the whole nostalgia thing going for them aswell. I think one of the main things that makes them so good is that the mallow has some really unique qualities about it. I have tried a few of the supermarket ones before and they always seem to have those dodgy solid textures for their marshmallow. The tunnocks are just so soft, mmmm I could eat them all day.

Anonymous said...

Somedays I feel very envious of you getting to try so many different things but today not so much. Do you ever get annoyed when the things you try aren't up to scratch? There are a fair few low ball scored for team cadburys here.

Henry said...

Someone tell me where I can buy those cookies yummmy!!!! I've been trying all sorts of different ones recently thanks to JCM. In the last few weeks I think I must have tried five different kinds!!!! Oreo Double Creme have been the best by far but I'm still trying to find a credible chips ahoy replacement. They are just to expensive to buy in all the time, I just need to find something like these cadbury triple choc to fill the void.

Elizabeth said...

Im fully prepared for the worst but there isn't a chance that I wont try those cadbury cookies.

Thanks so much for letting me know about them. I'm annoyed that cadburys haven't announced they have come out tbh. Have they been out long? They totally slipped in under radar.

Zara said...

I think you have been harsh on the mallows. I was able to get the whole large pack of 18 for just £1 the otherday. I agree with you that they aren't as good as Tunnocks but I think the score is relatively harsh. I think you might have just rated them so low because you are comparing them to a really really good alternative. I'm not for one minute having a go at your scoring, you do well most the time I think.

Zara said...

I'm looking forward to the allure review btw. When is it coming?

Vhahri said...

You should do a similar type of round up thing for all the new hotel chocolate chocolates. If you look on their website they have tons of new chocolates for summer. I haven't heard of people buying chocolates to celebrate summer before but I'm not going to complain if its an excuse to see some new stuff from them.

Whilst I'm on the topic actually can I ask you look at some specifics ... I want to see the tiramisu slab, the summer desserts and sea salted caramels reviewed please. I'm looking for a good mix to buy for a friends upcoming birthday. They love chocolate but haven't ever had hotel chocolate. If they like it half as much as I do then they will be well happy I think.

Graeme said...

Jim Jim Jim what are you doing to me man. Cadbury are the best why have these got so low on the ratings. They can't be that bad dude.

Joe said...

God dammit Cadburys have never mastered the whole fruit and chocolate thing have they?
The whole bar of plenty range was pretty shocking + the dairy milk with orange chips was never any good either. You would have thought that for such a large scale producer they could have got it right by now. The scores are just low all over again.

Anonymous said...

I swear cadburys have been on a mission to release as much stuff possible since the whole kraft takeover. Before then they were way more careful and considered as a company. Since Kraft took up the reigns its just been non-stop releasing of products.

Lol I don't know which I prefer to be honest with you. Cadbury were pretty boring for many many years remember,

Boomboomben said...

Thanks for the heads up on those tea cakes being crappy but I don't think I would have ever strayed away from the tunnocks ones anyhow. There are just some brands that own certain products that I wouldn't even think about swapping - Heinz beans/ketchup, Hovis bread and of course Tunnocks tea cakes. They are just the best, anything other than those brands for those things just wont do.

Yasmine said...

Im really excited to see what you say about this Flake Allure they have coming out. Do you know when you should be getting a review up? I hope its soon I would love to hear how good it is asap. The flake has been a favourite of mine since I was a little girl. I just love the way it crumbles :)

Alan said...

@ Joe - I wouldnt say that was entirely true.. the Bar of Plenty range is great although the Toffee Apple wasnt so good. I think they did quite well with those old cranberry and apricot bars. They do a lovely DM Mint Crisp bar in Ireland, they used to do Orange Flavoured DM here which was gorgeous (I was never a fan of the 'chips' either though)and of course Wispa Mint which was also fab.

Phil said...

Agree with you on the Fox's Ambers Jim - I thought they were too sweet, a real letdown.

Jim said...

Louise/Zara/Yasmine - I've still not found the Cadbury Allure yet I'm afraid. I will inform you all when I have.

Anon - I don't get annoyed at all. If things aren't the level I expect of them then I just have to say that in the reviews.

Henry - I got them in Tesco chap.

Vharhi - The Hotel Chocolat reviews will be coming up very soon. I'm currently in the fun part of the process :D Yep eating all the samples haha!

Alan - I had forgotton all about that Mint Crisp bar they have in Ireland. Are they still merchandising the Bar of Plenty chocolates in the stores round your way? In some of my local supermarkets they have swapped them out for the new Bliss bars.

Phil - You should see my write up in next weeks bits n bobs review.

Thanks everyone - until tomorrow :D

No, I don't remember seeing anything like the Chocos around here.

I asked about Zotter because of a few intriguing tweets :)

oops I've been reading these out of order, never mind my last comment about reviewing ice cream. Thank goodness they don't produce more chocolate.
@Alan that mint crisp sounds great, imho Ireland has the best Dairy Milk.

I found the chocos a rather plain to be honest. They were very mild in flavour and they didn't really melt that well.
