June 13th: Hotel Chocolat Mississippi Mud Pie

Delivered Chocolate Gifts from Hotel Chocolat

My adventures with the Hotel Chocolat Summer Peepster Collection continued today with me trying another of their dessert themed offerings - the Mississippi Mud Pie. Doing my background research like I always do, I was informed by WIKI that ...

'Mississippi mud pie is a chocolate-based dessert pie that is likely to have originated in the US state of Mississippi (Duh!!). The treat contains a gooey chocolate filling on top of a crumbly chocolate crust. The name "Mississippi mud pie" comes from the dense cake which resembles the banks of the Mississippi River. It is believed that this dish was created by home cooks after World War II because it was made of simple ingredients that could be found at any supermarket and did not require any special cooking tools' .... isn't that fascinating :D :D

Though the recipe may have originally hailed from the States this hasn't stopped Hotel Chocolat serving up their own version of this chocolatey treat in their own unique form. This chocolate slab variation of the dessert came billed as 'solid milk and white chocolate, decorated with chocolate biscuits and dark chocolate'.

No surprises what size this one came in - 100.0g!! It came packaged inside the standard cellophane packet (should be foil I think!) and looked attractive on the eye with the swirled appearance of the differently toned chocolates creating an exciting visual sight to behold. Upon breaking open the seal to the wrapper, forthcoming scents of chocolate and sweet honey biscuits could be detected - I wasn't going to hang around getting to work on this one.

With my handy taste assistants in attendance I put my bulging, manly biceps *ahem* in to action and went about the task of splitting the slab in to smaller mouthful sized pieces. Hopefully from my photo above you can determine that the biscuit pieces were proportionately distributed across the slab, and were generously integrated in to both the surface and middle parts of the bar. As you can probably also see from my photo the majority of the slab was comprised of milk chocolate - Hotel Chocolat's 40% recipe to be accurate. I've described this chocolate countless times beforehand, rest assured all the usual cream based cocoa flavours were on offer here, and they were delivered with the usual flavour layerings of milk, butter and honey - Yum! The aforementioned biscuit pieces proved to not only be enhancing visually but also rather damn tasty, with one of my work colleagues hitting the nail on the head describing them as 'oreo-like' in taste. From a personal point of my view, I though the best parts of this slab were where the white and milk chocolates were intertwined, as the white chocolate brought further flavour depths of vanilla noted dairy cream to the party. As you can imagine there was a great scramble for the pieces that included the white chocolate, milk chocolate and cookie pieces in one. My only slight disappointment was that the dark chocolate seemed more there for decorative purposes rather than to enhance the taste a great deal.

Overall I was always confident I was going to enjoy this slab given that it was a pretty pure chocolate offering and not one that contained any outlandish enhancing flavours. I always think it is a sensible thing that Hotel Chocolat choose to put a plainer slab amongst their Peepster Selections. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that have more variable chocolates such as the Eton Mess (See - HERE), however at the end of the day I think its wise that they at least have one offering in a selection that sticks to their core principles of simple great tasting chocolate. This Mississippi Mud Pie slab fulfilled this role superbly and combined their staple milk chocolate recipe with the white chocolate and biscuit pieces to create something that was simple yet utterly delicious. This was a slab that was well liked by all that tried it, and it was hoovered up by myself and fellow taste testers in a matter of minutes after its opening. Whether it be as part of this Peepster Selection or in it's own large sized grand slab form, I can recommend this one with a great deal of confidence.

This one just sounds like their old milk fusion slab just with added cookie bits. Thats no bad thing mind you. That fusion slab was one of the ones I used to buy when I fancied hotel chocolat. It always allowed you to have best of both words with the milk chocolate and white chocolate. They then stopped making the small slabs of them the bastards.

Saving the best slab for the last review are we? ;-)
Lol you and your coffee chocolates Jim. You are so predictable J/k :-P

Kim said...

Mmmm that slab looks so thick and yummy. I still need to find my way to one of these hotel chocolat stores. I don't have one in my home town so I'm going to have to start looking further afield.

Nick said...

I used to think you talked Hotel chocolat up too much Jim but then I tried their chocolate and I'm so with you now.
Lol the only annoying thing about discovering how good their chocolate is, is that now everything else just tastes rubbish in comparison to it. My standards have gone up to high and I can't afford it every week lol.

Michelle said...

My b/f got me this selection for my birthday and I've tried the eton mess and this one so far.
The eton mess was my fave out of the two but this was still amazing. I don't think my cookie bits could have been spread as well as yours. Mine ended up being up one end of the bar so the other half was a bit plain. Apart from that I loved it.

Tip top review mate. You should become a fully fledged member of their PR team lol.

You do a great job of convincing me this is a chocolate I need to buy.

Lisa said...

Jim please please please can you review the new fizy lemonade slab. Im in a predicament where I don't know whether to order that one or this mississippi pie one. Its going to have a tough time beating it by the looks of it.

They just keep racking up these high scores don't they.

Golden_Touch said...

Hotel Chocolat popping up with a big score? Oh surely not lol.
Im only joking with you Jim, this does look very nice. Its not the fanciest slab we have ever seen from them but I know you frequently pop out the line that the simplest ones are often the best.

Matt said...

God dammit I was hoping for the tiramisu one to be done today. My dad likes coffee chocolate so I was hoping to see if it was any good to buy him for fathers day. Can anyone (incl jim) give me a thumbs up or thumbs down on it. lol im expecting a thumbs up and will probably just chance it whatever any one says.

I so so need to start a chocolate blog. It appears it is just week after week of eating hotel chocolat. Could life be any easier for you Jim :)

Steve said...

I think I must be the only person here that doesn't think hotel chocolat are all that.
I find that they are over expensive myself. They have disappointed me on more than one occasion.

Justin said...

Woop woop. I'm over to retweet this right now to the twitter universe. I still want those Ritter bars matey ha ha.

Yasmine said...

The cherry pop slab looks nice. review please Jimbo. The fizzy lemonade could do with a chocolate mission outing aswell please. Lol you must get so annoyed with us continually just asking for more from you. Apologies if it feels like we treat you like a reviewing machine, I only constantly ask you to do more because I like them so much. Thanks for everything.

You have been doing so well with your chocolates recently, i can't even remember the last time you said you reviewd something bad and gave it a crappy score. I think you are just getting yourself known with too many big boy posh chocolate people. We need to get you back to the days of ranting about the rubbish minor companies ;-P

Lol you know im only joking hun. Im glad you are getting such great chocs. It must be so rubbish for you to have to write reviews on the worse ones. Loving your work like always.

Mississippi mud pie sounds gorgeous. I want to try this and the real dessert now. I wonder if the supermarkets sell it? Is it just an american thing?

Tony said...

I think this is one of the first reviews that has ever made me properly drool lol.
Amazing review again Jim.

Lucy said...

This was one of the ones that I fancied when I was lookin on the Hotel chocolat site a couple of nights ago. I had to use full restraint not to buy it but now I feel like I have justification to treat myself. Im mega stressed with exams at the moment ... I errr ... need the chocolate for brain food :)

Its payday for me later this week. Lol I think I know where im headed.

I to thought this was going to be boring compared to the others but it also ended up being my 2nd favourite (i had to give my sister the eton mess unfrotunately).

Mine could have done with more cookies but I won't complain about it too much. I would buy it again without question.

I just RT'd your review.

Lol jim do you get all your research from Wikipedia?
You do know anyone can write entries in there right. It could all just be madeup rubbish.

Hey J

DId you hear about Pool's special bid to nab Phil Jones off you. Lol I don't know what we were up to but it sounds a bit odd. I don't think it is going to change anything but it would be funny if he did come to us lol.

Cool post today mate. I always enjoy looking at the HC pictures on Monday lol.

Cheers

Are u gonna review the eton mess again or is it the same as the one they always have?

Zara said...

I've had proper mississippi mud pie dessert in america. Its sooo nice. Especially if they make it with ice cream and hot chocolate syrup.

Mmmm I really shouldn't be allowing myself to be thinking about such tasty things first thing in the morning lol.

Richard said...

£14.50 or all of these isn't the worst price ever. When they used to be £12.50 I used to think they were a little expensive then, but now I know how great hotel chocolat are I can accept the prices a little more. I wouldn't pay it every week.

Colin said...

Fair play to Hotel Chocolat. If all these chocolates are as good as you say they are then they obviously give consistent high quality.

Lauren said...

I think this selection looks like the best they have ever done. Its just so colourful and the flavours they have are all so different. Its finally good to see them do something without nuts for once.

I've retweeted your tweet about this review twice already Jim. I hope you are taking note on how much I RTing you. I have to be in a good position for the ritter chocolate don't I? When r u letting us know whos won.

Anthony said...

I hope in the future they think about releasing the smaller slabs individually.

I don't have the money to buy the big one and im not interested by the fruit ones in this peepster collection. Its unfrotunate because I would really want to try this one. The score is very impressive.

Ryan said...

Cheers for another amazing review Jim.

I think HC bring out the best in your writing. You generally go in to more detail + write in more depth when you write about them. They must inspire you with their choc.

Excellent. I got given a £30 gift voucher for my birthday at the weekend. Im going to hold on spending it for the minute until I see what else you are going to review. One thing I will definitely be using it for is one of these mississippi slabs. I just don't know if its going to be the big one or as a small one in this selection just yet.

Hazel said...

When im rich (yes 'when' lol) im going to have hotel chocolat everyday. I wont care if I get fat cause i will have £$£$£$.

Emily said...

I just bought some whiskey truffles for fathers day for my dad. I wish I had put one of these on order for myself grrrr.

Alan said...

Ive had Mississippi Mud Pie as a desert before (my sister made it) and we both hated it lol. we followed the recipe (from one of these cake cafe places) but it was pretty horrid. Whether its like that in the USA I dont know but it put me right off it.

@Steve.. nah youre not the only person who doesnt think much of HC lol Ive tried it a couple of times (my sister likes it and I got her a slab.. not impressed, and she once bought me a sleekster box.. again I didnt think they were anything special). Ive tried to see what it is that everyone likes about it but I dont see it atall lol. Same with Oreos aswell.

Roxy said...

Jim - HOW can I possibly not crave such HC goodies when your reviews make them look & sound soo tempting?! x

Jim said...

HI All,

Thanks again for all the feedback today. I will get arounf to answering your weekend comments a bit later when Im not rushing out the office.

What can I say about Hotel Chocolat that I haven't said already? I understand that some of you think it suspicious that I give consistently high scores, but I simply can't help doing so when the quality is this high.

Thanks for all the feedback and please keep them coming. There are some exciting things coming later in the week :D ... I always say that I know haha!

DAVID - Best until last? I never do that me :D

LISA - Request noted :D

GOLDEN - You do take notice of what I say then :D Thats dangerous.

STEVE - I know plenty of people who don't see what the fuss is about with Hotel Chocolat. Its like everything, there are fans and non-fans.

YASMINE - Request noted. PLease keep them coming, I don't mind at all.

RACHEL - Indeed I have been very lucky recently. I get even LUCKIER :D on Wednesday haha!

PAUL - I can't recall any desserts out there at the moment. It could be worth looking in somewhere like Tesco though.

LUCY - I agree. Chocolate is great brain food.

STU - Not all of my research but a fair wack of it is Wiki based :D

ANON - The eton mess is the same as it has always been ... utterly superb.

RICHARD - Hold the back pages. Richard in pricing ok shocker :D :D

SETH - That made me genuinely laugh out loud :D

ALAN - Oh no. It can be so awkward when someone makes something and it doesn't taste nice. It reminds me of that episode of friends when Rachel makes the trifle with the lamb mince :D :D

ROXY - You can always buy them haha :D

Thanks for the comments everyone. Please be patient if they are not getting through straight away. I'm having a few issues with my google account settings, thus I can't verify comments on the move anymore.

Remember to enter the twitter competition this week. I have Ritter Sport chocolate in the offering.

Jim please stop reviewing HC chocolate. I can hear my credit card crying from my purse already. I think im going to put in an order as soon as you review a few more. Just of out interest can you let us know what else you plan on reviewing please. I wouldn't want to order stuff and then you show us something even better.

Jules said...

I was hoping to see a review of the tiramisu today but this one will do I suppose :P
Lol Im jus pulling your leg Jim. Fantastic review and another promising one from HC.
This tiramisu slab is the one im looking forward to though, it sounds amaze.

Alicia said...

Coming on here every Monday morning I never fail to leave without salivating onto my keyboard :P All these Hotel chocolat reviews recently are just getting too much for me to look at. I've not ever had much from them, but what I have tried has been the best chocolate I've ever had. I think I will have to buy some of these newer slabs once your done scoring them all. At the mo Im thinking of just getting a big one of this misssissippi.

Becci said...

Sheesh 8.9. Thats one of the highest you have given out this year, you must have well liked it.

I wish I had the money to try them all but I think if I buy some HC soon its going to have to Eton Mess all the way. I've had some of the EM truffles in a white and light selection box before but I think the slab has the potential to be even better.

Ryan said...

Your going to think im obsessed talking about muller again but does anyone remember the old muller mississippi mud pie corners
http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/41605_82771842061_6238861_n.jpg
Omg they were great. They are sadly not with us anymore :(

Anonymous said...

After all these years I thought you might have started to get tired of hotel chocolate. By the sounds of it you love it just as much you have always done, if 8.9 is anything to go by that would be appear to be the case anyway.

Naiomi said...

hmmmm this one looks and sounds nice but it doesn't look half as exciting as some of the other do.
I would have liked to have seen you say it played the three types of chocolate better aswell. They should have made dark chocolate more of a part of it than just being their for decoration. That sounds stupid to me.
it does make you wonder why they would have it there in the first place.

KP said...

How anyone could say they don't like this one is beyond me.

Lol you would have to dislike chocolate full stop not to fancy giving this a try. Thanks for the review Jim lad.

Thank you for running the competition. I really hope I win it.

This one looks great. Is it nut free Jim?
I think my kids might be able to have it looking at it. I can't see anything that looks like it will have nuts in. I would think it still carries the warning though.

Jim said...

MICHELLE - im afraid the hotel chocolat reviews are going to continue for a while yet. Plenty more to come.

JULES - Patience! The tiarmisu slab is coming next week for a review.

BECCI - I would highly recommend the eton slab.

RYAN - I remember that one. They used to make ones like banoffee pie and all sorts didn't they.

LINDA - It is nut free by the looks of the ingredients. Like you say though I don't think they will state that on the packaging. Just how sevre are their allergies? I would imagine they would be ok with it if it isn't too bad.

Thanks everyone

JIM

This has to be their greatest selection of chocolates yet.

All of them sound glorious. I will be buying one of these as soon as soon as I get the chance to visit town.

Eric said...

The day Hotel Chocolat finally bite the bullet and start selling their chocolates in the supermarkets will be a glorious day.

Its so frustrating having to visit one of their stores or buying it online. They need to take a leaf out the book of thorntons and hop to it selling it in the likes of tesco.

If they think that is below them they could always go for waitrose or marks and spencer or something like that.
