Before you start reading the rest of this review go grab yourself a coffee or a fresh cup of tea and prepare yourself for another post featuring a whole bunch of superlatives describing some Hotel Chocolat truffles :DHotel Chocolat Mondays continue this week with me taking a look at the latest 'H-Box' creation from the guys at HC. This time around I was treated to a 'Summer Desserts' themed box, a none to dissimilar proposition from last years 'Just Desserts' offering. This years selection contained eight pieces which I will go in to more detail below. As one would expect there were some chocolates carried over from last year, whilst also some new ones created for 2011.
As always the selection came beautifully presented with a menu containing a detailed descriptor for each piece. All round, myself and my ever willing taste assistants agreed the selection was well varied, though my father though it could have perhaps done with another dark chocolate offering as there was only the single truffle.

As I alluded to above there were a few pieces in the selection that I had already come across in previous reviews. Pictured in the group shot above, the Chocolate Brownie (Very Good - See HERE), Mousse au Chocolat (Superb - See HERE), Eton Mess (Superb - See HERE) were all consistent from previous encounters. If you haven't had a Hotel Chocolat Eton Mess before you really haven't sampled one of their finest truffles!
You see the white chocolate on the far left!? This was a Lemon & Passion Fruit Tart chocolate which I mistakenly assumed I had reviewed previously (it looked uncannily like the Mango & Peach Cheesecake - See HERE). Unfortunately in between the time it took for me to realise my mistake and including it in this group shot, someone *ahem* my mother *ahem* managed to eat the only portioned in the box haha :D :D Well she said it was excellent, Superb-worthy in fact. She described the combination of the white chocolate and real tasting lemon and passion fruit flavours as a match made in heaven. She is a real fan of Hotel Chocolat's fruit flavoured chocolates, and this she said was one of the best ever. Superb.
Red Berry Mousse - This a reshaped version of the Red Berry Mousse from the Christmas Sleekster Selection (See HERE). Once again I thought the strawberry and raspberry filling was extremely well executed. Good.Coconut Bombe - One of the new ones for 2011, this Coconut Bombe proved itself to be a fantastic addition to the mix. The outer crisp shell of milk chocolate and dessicated coconut sprinkles complimented the extra smooth truffle filling quite amazingly. The centre was billed as white chocolate on the menu, though as you can see from the photo it was in actual fact a milk chocolate ganache. Was this an annoyance!? No not really - the coconut flavours were just as prominent and expertly delivered within the rich, creamy cocoa tones. Very Good.

Neapolitan - Another new for one for 2011 - if you haven't seen my full review of this terrific truffle I suggest you head HERE. Just look at the layering of the truffle, as you can imagine the Neapolitan effect is captured exceptionally. These chocolates are so worthy of yet another Superb.

Summer Pudding - Yet another carried over from 2010. Just as it was last year the truffle was bursting with strawberry, raspberry and blueberry influences within it's creamy smooth centre. As you can see from the cross-section it was yet another intricately made truffle that looked mightily impressive when halved. With two of these pieces in the box this year I even managed to nick one myself before my mother nabbed them :D Very Good.
Overall I gave away my thoughts of this box in the opening paragraph so I needn't bore you all much longer with a long winded conclusion this time around :D What can I say that hasn't already been said when it comes to Hotel Chocolat's competencies when it comes to these sort of chocolates?? In my opinion (which is shared by the rest of my family!) these guys really do set the standards when it comes to many types of truffles. Their one real speciality though has to be their fruit based ones - the evidence being the now legendary Eton Mess and Summer Pudding offerings. This years Neapolitan and Lemon & Passion Fruit Tart have only furthered provided further evidence of their expertise. I needn't say whether I recommend this Summer Desserts box as you only have to look at the scores for each piece. Another wonderful Hotel Chocolat offering.
8.8 out of 10

Its almost starting to feel like groundhog day in regard to these monday mornings.
8.8 is an incredible score, you must have really enjoyed these. BTW Jim pink charts? Whats up with them lol?
I've had enough of all these Hotel Chocolat reviews now :-P It's just getting silly just how many amazing looking chocolates that one company can make. I sometimes wish wish your photos of them weren't as nice so they didn't tempt me as much.

Wicked review Jimbob. I'll save you the embarassment of saying how brilliant you are again this week by going a bit off topc if you will allow me.
TALKING POINT: What you make of it if Hotel Chocolat created a cheap line of chocolate bars and sold them under the name Hotel Chocolate in everyday shops? Would you think that would be cool?
Contrversial huh ;)
Before anyone asks £11 :-)
Jim you have to start putting price info into your reviews.Your comments feed always gets gummed up with people asking mate.
If I was ever put in the horrible position of picking an all time favourite chocolate I would say the Eton Mess would be challening Paul Youngs Salted Caramels in my decision.
I think PAs caramels would nick it, but as far as Hotel Chocolat go I don't think it's ever going to be beaten.
Have they given up making boozie chocs?
They were going all out on them until this summer hit!
We've not see you complaining about them making their alcohol fueled chocolates being too strong for ages now ;) I always thought you were a wimp when it came to them Jim.
This site is like the Hotel Chocolat encyclopedia its awesome. I don't buy their chocolate very often, but I find your reviews so handy because they detail everything down to the smallest detail. The hotel chocolat website doesn't even give as much detail about their chocolates as you do. They always vague descriptions like 'a selection of pralines'. Keep up the top standards friend.
Oh your naughty mum. I would have loved to have seen what the mango peach one looked like. It sounds lush.
Wonderful chocolates
Fab review
Amazing photos
I couldn't ask for more from you hun. Your site genuinely brightens up my day. If only we could taste all these delightful chocolates you try.
Rxxx
I'm delighted to see you have reviewed this box today as it was one I was thinking of buying for a friends birthday next week. The big boxes are a little big (plus expensive) but these H-Box sized are just the perfect size to give people.
Summers barely started and you've pretty much reviewed their whole lot of summer chocolates lol. I've noticed a few you haven't done yet though. There is a new banana slab I would like to see you review please.
I think its along the same lines of the lemonade and cherry ones. Fingers crossed you can tell me its better than those two :) I love banana chocolates.
You should rebrand yourself as Jim's Hotel Chocolat Mission. No other make of chocolates gets as much of a look in as they do on this site.
Jim you do realise that when you run out of HC things to review for Monday mornings you are going to seriously depress everyone lol.
Its about time to they did something with coconut in.
Now for the slab HC!!! Make it happen plsssssss. A milk chocolate base with crunchy coconut on top would just be the best don't you tihnk?
Some coconut cream filled truffles wouldn't go amiss either, but lets keep it to one thing at a time lol
Dx
Mega Nibbletron NEEDS a review man
http://tinyurl.com/6kl768d Epic doesn't begin to describe him :) There is your Choc mission winner right there.
Well you seemed to have ignored my plea to you to stop reviewing hotel chocolat :-P
You are doing this nations health bill no good with your reviews you know. Talk about promoting obesity lol. no one can't resist after reading/looking at these.
Apologies in advance but im new to all this. Is this guy for real or is he an affiliate junkie? Are these chocolates really as good as they are being made out to be????
Peace,
Tye
Hey J
Great hotel chocolate review as always mate. I have to start buying more of their stuff. If Is saved up the money I spent on crappy snacks all the time i could probably afford them more often hmmmm.
DId you see England Women got knocked out their world cup on pens?? Lol some things never change no matter what gender :-)
Cheers
N
That picture of the neapolitan truffle is just beautiful. You must take ages getting them looking like that.
Does such thing as an Hotel Chocolat Autumn range exist or do they just go from Summer to Christmas? I don't remember there being anything significant in the way of one last year!?
I remember the cocktail chocolates being the ones they pushed for months and months (Lol I thought they were disgusting!!!!!!)
Thats one HUUUUUUUUUGE score, even for Hotel Chocolat.
The only part of the review I disagree with you about is the 8 out of 10 for the selection bit. I think that if you don't like chocolates being flavoured with fruits you could be in a little trouble. Apart from that it all sounds fantastico.
Jim I read on your twitter feed that Hotel Chocolat are shutting down their Knightsbridge store?????
Why are they doing this? Please don't tell me they are doing a Thorntons aswell. That would just take the biscuit
The difference in quality from Hotel Chocolat and say someone like Thorntons is getting wider and wider. I'm not bashing Thorntons at all but I think Hotel Chocolat are constantly stepping up their game and making consistently great new chocs. The best thing about them from my pov is that they are unique and not anything we have seen made before. I know you didn't like their Cherry Pop slab Jim but you have to admit it was at least different from anyone else has ever done. Truffles like the mango and passionfruit, neapolitan here are are also fine examples.
Jim I have exciting news .... for me that is LMAO! I got given a £25 gift voucher for HC for my birthday on saturday. My friend said she didn't know what chocolates I wanted becuase I went on about so many of them. I'm so pleased she bought me the vouchers as it means I get to decide now.
So here is my dilema people - I have £25 to spend but no idea what to splash it on. What would everyone recommed? These don't look a bad place to start do they.
Oh wow. The big rating on this one today is about as predicatable as the news of the world not being printed.
Give us a break. This is getting cringe.
Jim when is the winner of your competition last week being announced? Are we still meant to be retweeting your reviews? I have been since last Weds @FunkyTez
Well it's good to see hotel chocolat are back on form after those dodgy slabs you had to review last week.
I did take a look at the cherry fizz when I was in the store at the weekend. I can confirm that all of them are as sticky as Jim made out. The chocolate wouldn't budge in the sleeve, it wasn't very appealing, it just looked like it had brown sugar sprinkled on to it.
I'm with @Emily I think it's the eton mess are near perfection when it comes to chocolates. Everything about it is just so incredible. It looks, tastes and feels amazing. I hope it's won them some awards and they realise how special it is.
Part of what makes my monday mornings bearable is the fact that I know when I get my first cup of coffee and sit at my desk I know I have an HC review to look at on CM. The day this doesn't happen I will feel seriosuly let down :-P
Overall I gave away my thoughts of this box in the opening paragraph so I needn't bore you all much longer with a long winded conclusion this time around :D
....how rude
I needn't say whether I recommend this Summer Desserts box as you only have to look at the scores for each piece. Another wonderful Hotel Chocolat offering.
You should have just posted your yummy photos then :P :P Just kidding lovely. Love Hotel Chocolat.
Those are some serious chocolates man. That neapolitan one does look the business. You nearly totally convinced first time around it was reviewed it was worth trying but now I seriously think I need to get some.
Reading about your mum scoffing that chocolate before you could do the photo was a genuine LOL moment. Go Jim's mum, you're the best reviewer on the site IMO. We always agree.
Hats off to you Jim, you manage to keep these posts tres interesting despite saying the same thing every week Lol.
I've counted 7 out of your last 8 HC reviews have all pretty much said their products are very good but I think you've done it in a credible way that has been backed up by justified points.
If I was going to say one thing you could improve it could be that you send me all their white chocolates you get and stop palming them off on your mum or your sister :P I've noticed they aren't the ones you normally comment on.
Do us all a favour and run a Hotel CHocolat competition Jim. It's been years since your last one. Have they given up doing that for you now?
This review has made the propect of my jam and toast break exceedingly less interesting :(
I want some chocolate and I want some now.
I should never have shown my fiance your website. She is now convinved we have to have hotel chocolate chocolates at our reception
*sob**sob**sob*
Thats the sound of my credit card upon hearing this news. Unless they do some special service i'm not aware of I can see myself working until im 80 paying this one off.
Big thumbs up for choccie missions coverage of hotel chocolat's summer lot this year. They must be pleased with the way you have reviewed for them, lol they only had the two hiccups with those kiddie slabs they made. We can just gloss over the truth that my kids both thought the cherry fizz was the most amazing chocolate they have ever had. They keep bugging me to buy them some more, I don't think they have grasped that this stuff is ten times more expensive than their milky way stars lol.
Jim I thought of something the other day.
You keep encouraging us to leave comments because you say Hotel Chocolat read them right?
Well have they said to you they have made changes to any of their chocolates because of the feedback they got from your site? It would be fascinating to hear if they have.
These are amazing - I bought myself a box to scoff when I was hungover last week! I agree with every one of the scores - the Lemon & Passionfruit and Neopolitan being highlights for me, along with the Eton Mess of course.
Andrew - re: Hotel Chocolat smaller bars available in shops? Are you crazy man?! Sure it sounds great for us, but it would lead to a whole cheapening of the image of the brand. The whole point is that they are are special and you CAN'T just pop into Tesco to pick some up. They would lose their exclusivity. It would be the beginning of the end for them as image is everything. Didn't you learn anything from Thorntons?!
These all look and sound fantastic. The summer pudding and coconut bombe especially.
@Daisy - Oooh yes brilliant idea!
Does anyone else find it hard to choose when they visit Hotel Chocolat? I was there the other day and it's just an impossible task as everything looks and sounds lovely. I always go for the offer on the selector range, as you get a reduction if you buy three items.
Thank you :D I was really curious about the Lemon & Passion Fruit Tart. It's nice to read it really is as good as I imagined it would be.
I was looking around the Hotel Chocolat website and this Cookie Choc Chip Giant Slab caught my eye - is there a chance of a review?
Oh, and speaking of giant slabs... perhaps some would be interested to know that the Le Grand Crunch Milk Giant Slab is on sale - £9.80, which I think is a good price for a 500g Hotel Chocolat slab. Also, this box has a smaller version with only 4 of the chocolates (Coconut Bombe, Neapolitan, Summer Pudding and Mousse au Chocolat) which is just £4.25.
Hi All,
Nice comments from people again today - I can see how the groundhog day thing is working for some of you guys. Believe you me it feels like it when I go to write the reviews some times :D
This was a really exceptional box of chocolates, but I do see what some of you guys are saying about it having limited appeal if you are not a fruit chocolate fan.
NICK - Selection box reviews always have pink graphs.
ANDREW - Can of worms officially opened :D I personally think they shouldn't launch a line of chocolates like that. They should stick to what they do best and are best known for. The highest quality.
KAREN - I hadn't noticed that. I don't mind the switch of focus myself. I prefer non-alcohol chocolates to the alcohol fueled ones.
DAISY - I think a coconut slab would be a nuts idea :D :D haha only joking more like 'the nuts!'. I love a good bit of coconut - you know me I'm up for trying most things.
MYSTERIO - Request noted. It does look cool though I will give you that already :D
TYE - I can confirm that I am very much 'For Real' haha :D I use affiliate links but I give unbiased opinions on everything. It's the only way to keep trust from my readership.
NIGEL - I did see the women on the news yeah! Like you say, nothing new for an England fan there. Big game bottlers!
SIMON - I think they do have an autumn range of chocolates but they aren't branded as such. I will keep an eye out and let you know if I hear about anything about one.
TRICKY - Don't worry! They are only closing it to reopen another in a better location. Panic over haha!
LINZ - You are going to have to let us know more information than that. You should buy what you fancy yourself anyway, not what we say :D
ANON - Competition winner announcement coming on Weds!
FIONA - I can't believe I allowed that comment to come up :D You have no idea how much she will love reading that. I will never hear the end of this.
LUKE - I think they would feel narked if I gave them away chap. They are well used to trying them out on my behalf now.
IAN - Oh no that doesn't sound great news. I have no idea if they have services for such a thing. One would expect they do.
PATTRA - Interesting question! Let me ask them about that.
LINZYLOO - No better away to cure the hangover blues with a bit of sugar eh!? I couldn't agree more with you about the Hotel Chocolat in Tesco thing. You hit the nail on the head.
PHIL - Luckily I don't live near one of their stores so the only chocolates I ever get from them are the ones they send. Speaking of which I should have got a delivery today, I better go hunt it down in the office before some cheeky devil wises up and nicks it haha :D
Thanks for the feedback as ever guys and girls. Keep it coming, you know I love hearing from you all.
JIM
These chocolate pictures always look so professional and delicious. Is it always your dad that takes them?
It's good to know they have been clever and kept some of the more successful flavours from the year previous.
Do you have any idea how you think they determined which to keep and which to scrap? You would think it was obvious with most boxes of chocolates but if someone said to me which ones would you get rid of out of this box of Hotel chocolate truffles I think 99/100 I would struggle to pick any of them.
ps - so glad they kept eton mess.
Jim you shouldn't worry about readers not believing your reviews or calling them repetitive. FOr starts those people are just idiots and don't know good chocolates when they see them.
The only thing repetitive about your reviews are that they repetitively brilliant. I don't want you to change a thing and if you take Hotel Chocolat Monday's away from us a I would lead a personal crusade to get them reinstated. I don't think people will take much persuasion to join me.
These looks great but they've missed our some very obvious desserts if you ask me.
What about ones like treacle tart? Spotted dick? custard tart? Apple pie? .... I know they couldn't do everything but some of the ones they did pick were pretty boring. Tell me genuinely that anyone wanted both chocolate brownie and mousse au chocolate. One would expect they have to be a lot like each.
Mission accomplished if it was your aim to make me insanely jealous Jimbo. I have massive truffle envy looking at these foodporno photographs of yours. You must take such great care when you are doing your work there. Everytime you seem to manage to get them looking the same in style and so terrifically drool worthy. I love that one of the summer pudding.
Sorry but I couldn't help but laugh reading that bit about your mum eating the chocolate before you photographed it :) :) I think I would have that same problem with myself lol. It must take great restraint just not tearing open the box and noming them all when you get them.
Most the time I buy chocolates I'm barely out the shop befire I have some in my gob lol. Thanks for the review.
This ones been made with such a female bias. Check out the number of white chocolates to dark.
I would be disappointed if someone bought me this lot.
Did you ever read this Jim? It coudl be a gd article for your news page
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/analysis-and-features/meltdown-on-the-high-street-2305833.html
It just talks a bit about the fortunes of Thorntons and Hotel Chocolat closing and opening stores.
Hotel Chocolat should let you run their website Jim. You do a better job of selling their chocolates to us than they do themselves.
I work in website design and their site is a total disaster. The worst thing is that its been like that for years now. You would have thought they would have got it sorted with all their success.
It would make my day being given a box of chocolates like these. I moved department at work last week and only got a box of minature bloody heros. I had only worked there for a month so maybe expecting something posher was a bit unrealistic lol.
Its good they kept the brownie but did they really have to keep so many of the others?
I get the eton mess is popular with a lot of other people but keeping the mousse au chocolat as well as the brownie was just idiocy.
It's all about keeping things fresh and new!!! I understand it must be hard doing that but thats what sorts the wheat from the chafff.
Thanks so much for doing another one of the ones onthe list I gave you JCM. I know you are going to shoot me but please can you do me the pleasure of reviewing the new midnight mints box they just brought out. I'll get you the link to it if you need it but I'm sure you are well aware of it already.
The neapolitan chocolate does look simply sensational.
It must take so much care getting all the layers so intricately woven together. I wouldn't be able to resist trying them if I got the chance. Luckily for my health and bank account we don't have a hotel chocolat shop nearby lol.
Have you guys noticed they now have some deals up on some of the smaller summer chocolates?
The deal isn't amazing but they are doing 3 for £15 on things like the chocolate sandcastles and smaller truffle packs. I'm going to wait it out until the proper sale but its a good sign of things to come.
I think you need to start paying your Dad more. The photography on your reviews in the past two weeks has been nothing short of exceptional.
When I want to fantasise over chocolates, Chocolate Mission is the first place I head now. Informative reviews with crystal clear pics. It's terrific all round.
Too many ones with fruit in for my preference. I'm generally not a fan of these assortment chocolate boxes you get. I'm pretty fussy to what I like and dislike so I generally prefer to buy big boxes of the same chocolate that I know I like (ferrero rocher etc).
It's still good seeing the reviews though. I do like seeing the different chocolates they have
I'm digging these! summer pudding WIN brownie WIN eton mess EPIC WIN. You can't say no when those are in the mix.
I don't understand why anyone would a box of premade chocolates when you can go into a shop and make up your own. Don't you people realise that Hotel Chocolat do this?
You can just go up to one of their counters and they will make your own mixed selection.
Jim why don't you do that - no doubt you would award yourself ten for the selection measure.
I don't wish to be a party pooper but this isn't the most appealing box of chocolates for me at all. There are way too many similar sounding fruit ones for my liking. Speaking as somone who doesn't enjoy the likes of strawberries, raspberries or anything like that the selection left remaining is pretty limited here. I wouldn't turn my nose up at it, but I would disappointed considering there are so many other ones that would be better matched to me.
haha your mum moves fast :D I remember her doing the same with the orange melting hearts lol, which I thought were the best of the box. What a brilliant idea, to combine passion fruit + chocolate.
hmm this is the 2nd truffle menu in a week to be inaccurate, I wonder if companies play around with the recipes at the last minute?
@Phil yes! that selector deal has gotten me too
@Tye Hotel Chocolat is pretty consistently good, based on their bars the brownie one should be rated higher imho :)
ALYSSA - Thanks for the nice words. Indeed my Father has started taking the majority of my photos nowadays. You can tell which ones he does and which I do can't you :D
ALEC - I would of thought they would make those sort of decisions based on sales and consumer feedback. The tasting club will play a big factor in things I think.
EMILY - A best of British desserts box has been mentioned on this site before. I think it would be great to see it made.
ANON - Only women like white chocolate??? Hmmm I beg to differ there!
DAVID - No I hadn't read that. Great article chap I will add it to the news page later when I update it.
PHILLIP - I get what you are saying but there is the counter argument to that of why fix something that isn't broken. It can be looked at in a number of ways can't it.
YASMINE - No worries. You know I like fulfilling reader requests :D Keep them coming.
RICHARD - Trust you to sniff out the deals before the rest of us! Good work and thanks for sharing.
LUCY - Don't say stuff like that :D He will take that seriously you know :D Thanks for the nice words.
JADE - Not everyone lives in a town or city with a HC shop. It would be interesting me putting my own selection box together though wouldn't it. I will see what I can do.
THEA - Who knows why they are inaccurate. Like you say it will probably be down to last minute changes etc.
Thanks everyone
JIM
Your mother was right, Jim, the Lemon and Passion Fruit was superb. I'm not huge on lemon but the addition of the passion fruit really brought it to the fore. The best part was the dark inner chocolate coating underneath the outer white chocolate layer.
All the chocs were delish, but that was definitely my favourite.
