Kinder Pingui Choco - Kcal 134 Fat 9.0g Fat(sats) 6.0g Carbs 12.0g (per 30.0g bar)Originating from Poland, this Kinder Pingui seems to be a product that has distribution throughout most of Central Europe (Check out the cool website HERE). My Polish translation isn't up to much but if I was to hazard a guess at the product description it would be along the lines of an 'extra milky cream filling with a covering fine dark chocolate'. Essentially it seemed rather like the previously reviewed Kinder Delice (See HERE), but just with a larger volume of inner cream. The outer chocolate was less sweet than in other Kinder products, however this was only marginally noticeable due to be fast becoming overwhelmed by the sugary inner filling. Although light and mousse-like in texture, the cream itself still managed to establish a pleasant fresh dairy cream taste that left me wanting more. It wasn't the most fulfilling of snacks but I would happily have another.

Storck Milk Knoppers - Kcal 528 Fat 32.0g Carbs 52.0g (per 100.0g)Breaking up the Ferrero Kinder dominance today we have this Storck Milk Knoppers offering hailing from Germany. Again excuse my dodgy translation but I'm lead to believe these come described as 'cocoa, milk and creme filled wafers with a hazelnut cocoa layer', and it came in a 25.0g size. This for all the money looked like a 'run-of-the-mill' European wafer product, and guess what!? Well it was :D haha!! I've tried a fair few products like this in my time and this Milk Knoppers did nothing that much better or worse than the majority of them. For my liking the wafers were a bit of a let down with their somewhat stale texture and lack of flavour, but the hazelnut cocoa creme and milk layers did at least bring a credible amount of interest for each bite. As a snack I can't say there are too much wrong with these, I wouldn't however go out your way to hunt them down.

Kinder Maxi King - Kcal 528 Fat 32.0g Carbs 52.0g (per 100.0g)Wikipedia had a nice bit of blurb on these (See HERE). According to them this one is described by Ferrero as 'two layers of milk cream with whole milk, liquid milk caramel , milk chocolate and soft waffle chips and hazelnuts'. This came in a 35.0g serving that I thankfully chilled before consuming alongside an afternoon coffee. Out of all the things I'm showing today this was definitely the best tasting. The outer shell of the bar was a delightful mixture of milk chocolate, soft wafer and chopped hazelnuts which brought about a nice biscuity taste to the party. The inner milk creme was not the conventional Kinder milk filling and had more of a liquidy cream-like form than normal that in turn brought a delightful cooling sensation as it escaped from the crisp textured confines. The caramel wasn't sensational by anymeans, however it was a nice addition to the taste and gave the cream a extra buttery sweet tone. If you ever come across these Kinder Maxi Kings please do two things - 1) Stick them in the fridge before you eat them & 2) Send me some :D

Wicked review Jim I was starting to wonder why you hadn't reviewed anything from the likes of Germany for a while. Looks like I was just being impatient lol.
You have your readers sending you chocolate aswell? You can't say you aren't spoilt lol. I get jealous enough reading about those big cheese companies sending you samples but to hear you are also being sent presents by your readership is just too much. Good on you ;p
Kinder are a funny company aren't they. I have always wondered how they are like the only brand out there that targets all their products at kids and gets away with it. You would of thought these days that it would be highly illegal to put toys in chocolate. Firstly you would have thought that their would be a high likelyhood of people sueing over the choking hazard and secondly I thought direct marketing to children (toys acting as an incentive) would be strictly outlawed by now. It would appear not though, they still sell kinder surprise round where I live.
Here in Ireland we only get Kinder Surprises and Kinder Snack bars. Apart from those two I don't think I've ever see anything else made by them. I might not be looking in the right places.
The wafer thing made by storck doesn't appear to be worth bothering over but I really wouldn't mind a try of the other two.
They used to sell a similar cake slice (called Kinder Slice lol) in my local Spar store but that was years ago and its been long gone now. I remember it being well tasty though, especially when the weather was hot.
There's something special about Kinder isn't there. It has universal appeal to everyone, I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't like their chocolate.
Fun bits and bobs post today Jim I wasn't expecting to see these. I like that you are a bit more UK focused these days though I still like seeing some of the things from abroad every so often.
Are you going to be reviewing any asian chocolates again anytime soon? There was a point at the start of the year where we got a whole spat of crazy Japanese chocolates. You haven't reviewed anything from there for a very long time now.
Loving your bits and bobs work Jim my man.
Hold on a minute!!!!!! that top one doesn't include any nut content as far as I can see :) Thats almost unheard of for anything made by Kinder, they put nuts in everything.
Dx
None of these are the sort of thing I would buy now but I can see how they might have be suitable for like a kids lunchbox. I think there would be a market for any of them if they sold them properly.
Jim I was under the impression that both of those kinder things would need to be stored in the fridge regardles because they are both made with fresh dairy cream. Lol no wonder you thought they tasted better when you stored them in there, I can't of thought having them outside of the refridgerater for any good length of time would do them much good in the long run.
Hey J
Saw the Man U result yesterday. Your boys didn't do half bad did they ;) 7-0 in a friendly is ridiculous. It doesn't look like David Beckham playing over there raised the standard of football at all.
This was a cool Bits and Bobs thank you. Your review that you did on the normal kinder surprise is pretty old. You ever thought of redoing it or updating the existing one?
Cheers
N
OMG OMG OMG
Im the biggest Kinder fan ever! I need to try both of those two right now =) =)
Apologies for going OTT but kinder was like the only chocolate I would eat when I was small. It's exciting to hear they are still around and making things for kids.
I wouldn't normall give any of these a second glance but you did get my attention with you picture of the inside of the Pingui. It just looks so creamy and lush. The delice thing linked in at the bottom doesn't sound half bad either now I see it.
I could be wrong but wasn't there an old Nestle ice cream that was called MaxxiKing? I remember one that at least sounded like it tha had vanilla and chocolate ice cream sandwiched between two bits of cakey wafer stuff. It was very nice.
The best Kinder chocolates are the hungry hippos. I wish they hadn't stopped doing the chocolate flavoured ones though. They were even better than the original haelnut ones imo.
Can I ask a silly question :-) what does Knoppers mean? I tried running it through a translator but it didn't come up with anything that could be directly translated.
We've just had a new polish newsagent kinda shop open up near me. Im thinking it might be worth a look in there to see if they have these in stock. I would be especially up for having one of those maxi kings. Caramel, nutty choc and milk. Nothing there not to be liking :)
Well if everyone is just coming out the closet and admitting they love Kinder then please save me a spot in the fanclub :-) :-) I've loved Kinder Surprises every since I can remember. I know the chocolate is probably crappy quality but sorry I have a little soft sport for it all. One thing I've always wanted them to do is big sized Kinder Surprises at Easter. I've got no idea why they've never done them. Its such an obvious idea.
Rxxx
No one ever has a bad word to say about kinder. I think its because they are such a friendly company. You aren't exactly going to be unpopular if you are a sweet company who gives away toys are you.
Although there stuff is normally a bit kiddie focused I do love the occasional ferrero made chocolate.
My favourite are the mini bars with the milk running through the middle. Lol they are like the step up from the Kinder surprise so are probably made for toddlers lol.
I'm always keen to hear about anything from Kinder Jim. Thanks for the reviews.
Jim if you have the time check out Ferreros german website they have so many products that we don't get over here. The Choco fresh look especially nice http://www.ferrero.de
Hazel or Jim can I be a right pain in the bum bum and ask where you bought any of these. I would love to be able to buy some for my g/f. Believe me I would get serious kudos for this if I was able to, she loves anything kinder related and she defo hasn't had these before. Thanks in advance for any help.
I know their chocolates are meant to be for small kids but I've often wondered why kinder have never brought out something that is a little bigger. Apart from Buenos everything they make here in the UK is just tiny. They aren't chocolates you buy if you are hungry thats for sure.
Good reviews jim. Do you remember when the Kinder snack bars (the small ones) used to be called Maxxi in the UK.
I think they changed the name a few years ago to Snack to make it consistent with the other countries. I'm probably giving them too much credit there and they just did it randomly. It makes sense though because I know the Kinder Maxi is something different in countries like Italy.
The adverts they have done for the Pingui are well funny. It looks like they are based around Pingu, they can't be a conincedence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZqU-dnuBsM&NR=1
Do us a favour and stop reviewing things we can't buy.
If I was judging things by your photos I would say the pingu looks the most appealing. The other two look ok but there's something about the cream bit in the top one. I would nom that all day long.
All three look gr8 to me J. I wont be able to comment or read this weekend so I thought I would say have a nice one in advance. I'm looking forward to Hotel Chocolat monday and reading up on snack of the week already.
The good thing about Kinder is that you always know what you are getting. I wouldn't say any of their snacks are that outstanding but you can always rely on them to be tasty enough.
Kinder ftw!!!!! I could eat that chocolate all day. I wish they would make some grown up versions of their snack bars. That would be epic, I would buy anything like that in a split second.
Mmmm that Maxi King looks like one to look out for. Thanks for the reviews Jim + Hayley.
I love the randomness of these. Why do you think it is that Ferrero make more chocolates for places like Poland etc and don't do that much for the UK? You would have thought the UK would be one the main areas where they do business. On that basis you would immediatedly be thinking that the more chocolate you have the better it is for them. Ho hum, what do I know. Poland could be a mega market for them lol
Yum yum I got to get me one of those Maxi King things man. I'm well keen on anything like that. Cream, chocolate and caramel. It's all good man.
They can't get enough of those wafer things like Knoppers can they. In paces like france, italy and germany they seem to have such a huge range of wafery things like that. I wouldn't mind know which is the best seller. I wouldn't be surprised to hear if Knoppers was up there. It's one even I've heard of before.
I wont lie and tell you I'm going to rush out and try and buy these. If I ever see any of them though I will remember this review I might consider buying to give you a 2nd opinion.
I've seen those Choco Pinguis knocking about before but never the Maxxi kings. I'm keen to understand anywhere that might be selling the latter if anyone knows. I hope its not just going to be luck of the draw of your local newsagents, theres gotta be somwhere online that does them.
Omg last time I was in france I bought this random pack of kinder cakes that were almost exactly like the pingui slice you got there.
It was a bit of a random purchase in the duty free place and I was so annoyed I didn't buy more after I finished them. By the time I realised we didn't sell them over here I had thrown all the wrappers away so didn't know what they were called in order to search for them on ebay. Now I know the name WIN!!!!!
Its refreshing to see you appreciate the smaller cheaper chocolates. Hotel chocolat seems to be your standard at the moment. Its good to know you can still see the good side of something that is completely different in terms of who its pitched at.
PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE!!!!! Exciting stuff. I've found a place to buy the Pingui one
http://www.nifeislife.com/kinder-pingui-cioccolato-4x31g-p-2395.html
I did get uber excited for a minute cause it looked like they had baci chocolates to but then I saw they were sold out.
http://www.nifeislife.com/perugina-baci-143g-back-stock-1102011-p-789.html
You so need to be reviewing them Jimbo.
I see the point some peeps are making about there being tons of wafer chocolates in the likes of Germany and Italy etc.
I think they have lots of them becaise they are big time coffee drinkers and they think that those wafers go well with them. I'm not going to argue with them. Whenever I go to costa or starbucks I always buy the vanilla wafers so I can dip them in
That maxxi thing doesn't look very nice in your photo. It looks like the insides have been melted. Did you not get it in the fridge all the time Jim? I think thats what might have happened there.
The only Storck products I ever buy are Riesens and the werthers ones, I wasn't actually aware they made anything other than those and some random chew sweets. The knopper is looks ok but I'm not chomping at the bit to buy one. It looks to me like it would be nice enough to have but at the same time not something to feel like you have really missed out on if you were never to try it ever.
I've tried all three of them and I don't think they're anything to get excited about.
I've never liked Kinder's milk chocolate much. And I find their milk cream even worse. I remember that when I was a kid, I always wanted Kinder Surprise eggs... but I never wanted to eat the eggs, I just needed the surprise inside - I still have a box full of surprises I've collected over the years.
Knoppers... they're pretty popular here in Romania. They're not bad, but I'm not crazy about the concept and Manner have a similar product (Manner Pausen Schnitte) that I like a little better. And I like other products from Manner a lot better, but that's another story :)
I really like Knoppers! There's a polish shop which I like to go a bit crazy in, it takes 2 buses to get there but it's worth it :) It's true though that a lot of their chocolate bars are wafer-based. Most of them are nice enough but Knoppers stood out for me as being a bit different and superior to the rest. They also have the pingui things but we do have something similar in Asda here so I didn't bother although I'd agree that they are supposed to be kept in the fridge.
But remember these?
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YiRUYjc7S6U/S-mfiqHEBaI/AAAAAAAAEcw/bKb5sYwtsSU/s1600/IMG_6764.jpg
They sell them too :) I always stock up, they're amazing.
Jim if you want me to send you any cool polish choc you've not had before I'll be happy to do so!
The maxi king looks like ferroro rocher meets cadburry caramel and creme eggs to me. I would definitely want to try that out.
Hi All,
There's a lot of Kinder love in the air today. It seems that people are getting a nice nostalgic wave from these.
Thanks again to Hayley for sending them through. At time of writing this she hadn't left any comment yet though I'm sure she will do at some juncture.
KIM - Indeed it was very nice for Hayley to send these across. I was very grateful.
GOLDEN - They don't have any direct ATL campaigns anymore so I'm sure it's all above board. McDonalds still give away toys with their happy meals (I think!!), so everything must be well within guidelines. I know one thing for sure and that is that we have stricter regulations here in the UK than they do in other EU countries!
HEATHER - Jlist are in current down time with their chocolate stocks as it is high summer there. They restock in October so keep your eyes out then.
ANDREW - You should try them from the freezer! They are even nicer.
NIGEL - The opposition was weak but yeah it was a decent workout nonetheless. I'll take a look at the old Kinder Surprise review and make a judgement call on it. Thanks for the suggestion.
IAN - Good :D I like hearing I encourage people to try new things.
ZARA - Wasn't that called the Winner Taco?
PETE - No idea what Knoppers means!? Anyone help Pete out here?
RACHEL - It also helps that the snacks are pretty tasty too you know :D
STU - Thanks for the link. I wouldn't mind trying more of them.
PAUL - I'll leave HAYLEY to answer that :D :D
LEWIS - It would be good to see them in bigger sizes wouldn't it. One and a half times the size would be nigh on perfect.
KIERAN - I do remember that yes. I guess they thought them being called Maxxi didn't make much sense as they were small.
DAVID - God I hated that plasticine penguin when I was small. It was one of my least favourite shows.
JOE - Oh dear I might be disappointing you come Monday :S
TERRY - The only thing I can think of is that Poland is closer to Italy than we are so getting the distribution out to them is theoretically easier.
OLLIE - I still think the Kit Kat is going to be up there as a bestseller. It's still very popular in the rest of Europe.
ANA - Haha you and me were the opposite. I always threw away the toys and ate the chocolate. I will have to keep an eye out for those manner wafers. I could have sworn I've had one before.
LINZYLOO - Thanks for the offer. Can you think of anything that would be worth me reviewing from there then? You know me I'm game for trying anything you know.
RODDY - You are nearly on the right path but you need to sub the creme egg bit for fresh dairy cream.
Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I hope you guys all have great weekends. See you next week.
JIM
Everyones forgetting about the poor Knoppers thingy today. I will give it some love lol. I really like the look of it me. It looks like it would be v nice partnering up with my morning coffee. Certainly a load more exciting than my usual rich tea yawwwwn.
Normally the problem with kinder chocolate is that the chocs are too small and always leave me wanting another. The ones you are showing off here look a whole lot more substantial than you would usually get for something made by them.
I dunno about the rest of you but that Maxi King thing looks a bit disgusting. Isn't the middle bit supposed to be creamy white like the pingu one above it? To me that looks like its gone all sour and brown :S The pingu looks lovely.
I've heard my german friend mention knoppers quite a lot before. I think they are as common as the everyday kit kat is here in germany. I find it fascinating how different market tastes can be so sublte. If they are really that popular in Germany you would have thought they could have just brought them out in the UK aswell.
@Daisy I also though they had nuts in their normal chocolate but it doesn't look like they do anymore. According to their website the ingrdients for a kinder surprise are
Fine Milk Chocolate (40%) (Sugar, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Emulsifier: Soy Lecithin, Vanillin), Sugar, Skimmed Milk Powder, Vegetable Fat, Concentrated Butter, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Vanillin.
That would suggest you would be ok eating their choc if you had a nut allergy or something. Lol please don't take my word for it though. I don't want to be at fault.
Thank you for the reviews mate. Can we have a british themed bits n bobs review next week though please. I much prefer seeing and hearing about the things I can go in to store and buy.
