July 27th: Galaxy Jewels Assorted Chocolates (UAE Arabic Mix)

My adventures with UAE sourced chocolates commenced forth furthermore this week with me finally completing a long term reader request in the form of these Galaxy Jewels Assortment. This review was made possible by ChocolateMission friend Fiona, who is currently an expat residing in the UAE.

The Galaxy Jewels typically constitutes a chocolate selection containing ten different chocolate varieties. This special Arabic Mix being reviewed today was a current limited edition offering that contained some never seen before flavours. Presentation wise I thought the package was very good looking, and I was impressed with both the packaging and chocolates themselves, which were held within individual foil wrappers. Contained within the plastic box a handy menu was included that allowed easy identification of the five different variants. As ever I have given ratings and my thoughts to each of them below using my usual scale of Awful-to-Superb.

Milk Chocolate - My thoughts on the quality of the UAE Galaxy milk chocolate were given in full in my last UAE chocolate superpost (See HERE). Not to my surprise, the quality from that selection, and this Jewels Assortment held consistent, with the milk chocolate here suffering once again from the enhanced levels of hydrogenated palm oil. This once again hampered the creamy flavours and typical Galaxy soft mouth feel across the different flavours. Poor.

Mixed Nuts - This blue wrapped offering far exceeded expectations with the three nut laced blocks made all the better in both taste and texture. Flavour wise the saltiness of the pistachios and woody hazelnuts gave the taste an extra dimension. Alongside this taste progression, the small sized nut particles also disrupted the waxy feel of the melting chocolate which was also a big positive. Good.

Coffee Caramel - This was another piece that was very positively influenced by a supplementary filling and I was again left relatively impressed. It was obviously quite a positive thing that the caramel took up a large proportion of the chocolate, thus detracting attention from it's poorness. The caramel inside was neither amazingly buttery or salt enhanced like the best caramels of this world, however the coffee note was surprisingly strong and had good cut through in the taste. Good.

Semsemah - This was always going to be one of the more interesting flavours and comprised of a milk chocolate heart shell containing a sesame flavoured praline centre. As you expect the outer portion melted with the same slimy mouth fell, though the praline at least had a little more grip to it texture wise. In terms of flavours the sesame element created a lovely buttery, cream nut taste that to me came across as mixture of almonds and chestnuts. This chocolate was good enough to make me want to try out some more sesame enhanced offerings. Good.

Qamardeen - What on earth is Qamardeen!? My brief amount of research shows that it is a hotel in the UAE - apart from that I'm totally oblivious!? What I can tell you about is what this chocolate constituted of, which was milk chocolate with a slightly fruity tasting caramel centre. If I had to guess the fruit I would hazard a guess at it being something along the lines of dates, as the fruitiness had a poignant sugaryness to it. This caramel wasn't as good as the coffee, but the chocolate was still all the better for it. Standard.

Overall this selection has showcased that even poor quality chocolate can be masked by some fair standard additional flavoured centres. I will save you me babbling on about the standard of the milk chocolate again, but it really is worth making the point that it is highly effected by the supplementary fats content. Hopefully that will give you some perspective in to how good some of these fillings were - the sesame praline, coffee caramel and mixed nuts especially standing out as unique and great tasting variations. Having tasted this limited edition Arabic Mix I'm now even more curious to see what the original selection has to offer with it's ten different flavours. If you come across this Arabic Mix I would suggest it as a highly superior option to many of the original Galaxy UAE offerings. This isn't chocolate in any sort of grand form, but if your a UAE citizen I would say they are at least worthy of your consideration - they are better than anything else I have experienced from this area.

Dohhhh I got all excited then. I thought mars had finally given us what we wanted and made a mixed selection box of galaxys :(

I understand they have celebrations already but I don't like snickers, bounty or maltesers :( Is it too much to ask just that they make us something like they get here?

That region of the world has a lot going for it (money + sun for starters LOL) but chocolte doesn't look like something it does very well. If you were a mad chocoholic and had to start living out there it would be hard to adapt if this sort of thing was the going standard.

I like the idea but the execution looks a bit shoddily done. I'm not sure about the flavours they chose, neither do I think they did the packaging justice. I think the plastic box makes it look very cheap imo.

Excuse my cluelessness but I'm new to all this ..... does the UK have the best dairy milk and galax according to jim? Has he found any countries that have better?

Andy said...

I for one wont be touching any of this arab chocolate with a barge pole. It appears like its just a lower quality version of what we have here. People are already saying that cadbury/mars chocolate is on the slide! I hope it doesn't get as bad as they have it over there.

I saw a very, very similar box of chocolates once in Heathrow airport duty free shop. I didn't buy them because it would have made my hand luggage too big but I intended to buy them when I was coming back through.

Unfortunately I totally forgot about them when that time came, its good to see you got the chance to review them. Your readers ar ebeing very kind to you sending chocolates recently :-P You're doing well out of us lot.

I don't even like normal galaxy chocolate and these just sound worse.
I like the idea of hearing what someone from the UAE would think of our galaxy vs theirs. We need to find the UAE version of Jim's chocolate mission LOL. I don't think there will be anyone cray enough to be donig that .... your one in a million hun ;)

How do you think these are sold in the UAE Jim?
Do you think they try to get passed off as being really fine chocolates or do you think they are more made for the mass market like a box of roses or quality street here in England?

Nick said...

I thought Galaxy chocolate was only called Galaxy in the Uk. I thought everywhere else it was called Dove instead?

Joel said...

I just searched youtube for Galaxy Jewels and found this well cheesey ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWfOnepgDBo lol I obviously don't understand whats being said but you can just tell it's proper cheese ball stuff.

Colin said...

If this is a special edition pack you've done the reviews the wrong way around =) You should have done the original selection first and then moved on to these.
Are you going to even be able to get hold of the normal ones now?

Julie said...

I can't think of a situation where I would ever be confronted with chocolate from that region (unless I go there on holiday which I don't really have the desire to lol!) so I'm not going to get myself worried about how poor it is compared to ours.

I'm just going to trust your review and be thankful that ours is supposedly better. GO GB!!!!

Duncan said...

Wicked review m8. These international ones you do are my favourites. I would of assumed naturally that galaxy chocolate all around the world would just be the same. Lol how wrong i was eh!

Anonymous said...

Yum the galaxy with pistachios sounds well nice. I'm loving anything pistachio flavoured atm! They are so addictive.

Ganesh said...

Great photos again today Jimbo. It's one thing hearing how each of the chocolates taste but I think you can always get a sense how good they are by seeing how they are made and what their fillings inside actually consist of. Nice one.

Louise said...

If this site has taught me one thing it's that it would be unwise to buy chocolate from the UAE lol. I don't think it would be command any space in my suitcase if I went on a shopping holiday to Dubai lol.

Ryan said...

So in your opinion not only are their versions of kit kat and dairy milk worse, but now you are saying that their Galaxy is also shocking!???? They haven't done a good job impressing you have they lol. I wonder if they have any so called higher end chocolate makers in UAE?

Zara said...

Oh dear I feel sorry for the person who sent you these. Maybe we should all club together and buy them some nice chocolate to say thanks lol. We would probably amaze them with just a bar of our normal Dairy Milk if theirs is as bad as Jim says it is.

Ian said...

Ace write up matey. No other site ever does this country comparisons in as much detail as you go in to.

Do you mind doing them or do you just find them a pain cause the other countries chocolate is rarely as good?

Gemma said...

Do they not believe in white chocolate or something? They don't have any white chocolate flavour in there which is disappointing. You would have thought it would be one of the first ones to get in there.

Ollie said...

A lot of the flavours here don't interest me. Do you think you could review the original box of Jewells instead? Does that person who sent these ones still keep in contact with you?

Paul said...

Jim I have a news article for your news page (soz this is unrelated to today)
http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/Articles.aspx?page=articles&ID=219252
I don't remember you reporting that. They sound alarmingly rubbish to me lol.

Anonymous said...

Its disappointing seeing that what they have done with the chocolate ruined what could have a really cool box of chocolates.

Yasmine said...

These reviews of the arab chocolates have been awesome. I think I'm right in thinking that they make their chocolate differently so that its more stable and doesn't melt in the heat that they have over there. I think its probably just one of those things you get used to when you live in that country. It's probably like drinking the local milk when you go on holiday - what tastes odd to us is just the norm for locals. Its got to tbe the same with chocolate.

Richard said...

The only place I can find delling these is here http://www.shaadi-gifts.com/products/Galaxy-Jewel-.html
They have them up there for £15 and thats without postage added on top!!! Thats pretty mental, I wouldn't pay that much for Galaxy chocolate thats for sure.

Anonymous said...

I feel awfully sorry for the person who's sent you these chocolates Jim. They must have such a hard time finding decent chocolate if this is what they have to live with on a daily basis.

Andrew said...

Has anyone here tried the new orange and shortcake galaxy they have in Sainsburys now? Omg it's the nicest Galaxy ever. If you haven't got around to trying it and consider yourself a Galaxy fan then you really should do.

Anonymous said...

So is Galaxy a big brand out there or is just small time?

Jez said...

A selection like this with all the galaxy bars we get over here would be prime!
I can never decide which one to buy so having them all in one would be such a cool thing to be able to have.
You never know it might happen one day.

Lauren said...

It must be so crap living out in the UAE if all the chocolate they get is as bad as this.
Im thinking Its likely that chocolate isn't a popular snack given the weather out there most of the time. It would melt like butter if it was kept in an unconditioned store.

Steve said...

After the chocolate we saw reviewed on Monday everything looks distinctly rubbish now lol. I'm obsessed about trying to get some of that Valhrona choc now. I'm still up for hearing if anyone finds a cheap source of it.

Henry said...

The sound of the chocolate they have out there really puts me off trying any of their chocolates. Like someone has said before it's all good trying to make the chocolate melt with uber smoothness but if you are achieving it through the use of yucky disgusting fats it isn't a good thing. I just wonder whether people from the UAE think our chocolate is clumpy and hard vs what they are used to.

Kev said...

I know this is completely unrelated but has anyone seen that Mars recently put Twix back in Celebrations? I think it's great they are back in but I can't work out what has been taken out lol. They have got to have taken something out of there because the pack still costs the same and they wouldn't give away more chocolate for the same price.

Warren said...

God that box does look very cheap and tacky. It looks like it should have some sort of kids toy in it not quality chocolates. Apart from that it looks like it would be a nice box of chocolates to try. The flavours look variable enough to have something in there for everyone if you were sharing.

Fletch said...

This is an interesting one I wasn't anywhere that any markets beyond the US even stocked Galaxy. I've always thought they had the opportunity to do a selection box with all the different galaxy flavours in. I would have presumed they would of just made something with single blocks of milk, dark, orange, nut and truffle. That would be a good start at least.

Anonymous said...

They got some cool flavours going on here. I don't think I've ever seen a sesame flavoured chocolate before. I can't quite imagine what it would taste like. I think you would have to just eat one to get a real understanding.

Lucy said...

Eww there are quite a few flavours I don't like the sound of here. That flavour starting with Q is one I wouldn't be risking. I don't like eating things that I don't know what they are. You never know what these foriegn things could turn out to be.

Gamer360 said...

Oh dear. If they do choose to pull the trigger on a galaxy themed selection box I hope they don't go for the list of flavours they have here. It would be disappointing if they did, I don't fancy the majority of them tbh with you.

Stu said...

Maybe I'm over reacting but I'm getting increasingly wary of manufactures swapping out ingredients for cheaper alternatives like these nasty oils.

When they aren't doing that they are making the chocolates smaller - arghhhhh I don't know which I prefer them doing. I think I would rather they put the prices up by a few pence than doing either tbh 100% honest with you.

Anonymous said...

Great review Jim. Thanks for sharing this with us. Next week can we have a bits and bobs review instead please.

Eric said...

It's quite a weird selection but I'm going to put me thinking that down to the cultural differences - it probs shouldn't come as a surprise that people have different tastes considering how different the countries are. Lol I don't think a sesame flavoured truffle would be top of mind for most people in this country. Thats not to say I wouldn't like to try it myself.

Denise said...

I would like to hear more about that Qamardeen one. Is it meant to be a proper flavour of some sort?
The fact you describe it as tasting fruity makes me think it might be some sort of local fruit maybe?

Michelle said...

Sesame and chocolate go really well together, one of my favourite snacks at the moment are these Sesame Snaps bars
http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/700989_Sesame_Snaps_In_Chocolate__40g__24_pack_.html
Maybe you could put them in a futue Bits and Bobs review Jim?

Darren said...

Wow if these are the normal flavours for chocolate selections then they have well weired taste. I wouldn't of thought this would be to well recieved here. There are too many questionables ones amongst the standard milk and dark chocolates.

Gary said...

I've heard about these before but never seen an actual review or write up about them.
They look like they are along the right sort of idea with the different flavours, it's just a shame that its all ruined by the quality ofthe chocolate.

I'm sure if we got something similar in the UK using the original galaxy we would have a much better rated product on our hands.

Jane said...

I don't think I would ever buy chocolate from this region because it just sounds disgusting with that extra oil in it.

I like Galaxy chocolate for it's softness etc but I prefer it was more naturally created using cocoa butter rather than using more of that horrible artifical stuff.

Nice review, in fact to me the most interesting in a long time :) I wish Galaxy would do a 'world food flavors' range so these would be more widely available (minus the palm fat), those local ones sound especially good - found this that says the mystery one has apricot juice
http://middleeasternfood.tumblr.com/post/4848438922/qamardeen-juice-a-thickish-drink-prepared-from
@Paul too bad they aren't going to do an Olympic themed range instead like their little endangered animal bars, with the collectible stickers inside.

Hey Jim, Im glad youve managed to try these at last.. I never have seen them again (though they probably are around somewhere), not even to try myself so its good to see a review up! :) I thought theyd be lost in the midst of time but it seems not lol. Sounds like I didnt miss much but its an interesting mix.

Fiona said...

Hmmm.... I haven't actually tried this set of flavours yet, only the standard Galaxy box. In answer to some of the questions above;
Locally produced chocolate (UAE & MENA region) is at best average, even from the big brands. My background is uk born, raised in OZ and 5 years expat in Dubai..
These are not passed of as 'fine' chocs, but I guess in the league of Cadbury Favourites (OZ) or Mars Celebrations.
Sesame, dates and Pistacio are used a lot in desserts in the region, so it seems fair that these are the 'Arabic' flavours selection.
I miss good 'day-to-day' chocolate, but thankfully it makes me appreciate it more when we go on vacation!
In OZ at the moment, but will see what I can do about sending a standard pack when I get back post Ramadan.
Cheers,
Fiona... UAE...

Hi All,

It's good to see so much feedback fly in once again thanks so much for the kind words about the reviews and the photographs (I actually did these ones myself you know ;)

Thanks so much to Fiona for not only providing the product today but also for answering some of the questions the rest of you guys enquired about.

OreoMonster - Still loving the name chap :D UK Dairy Milk is the best in my own opinion. The Irish stuff is equally as good though if you like the texture even thicker and creamier.

RACHEL - An Arab version of ChocolateMission :D Haha that would be a site to see :D

JOEL - Indeed that is one cheesey tv commercial.

IAN - I love doing the country comparisons. They are fascinating to do.

PAUL - Thanks I must have missed that one. They don't sound anything revolutionary do they. I guess we will see.

YASMINE - I think this is a very important point you raise here. I'm sure once you come accustom to the local dairy produce the differences become less noticeable.

RICHARD - Haha trust you to find them at some ridiculous price. I don't think they would be the cheapest thing to post either.

ANDREW - There is a review knocking about you know ... some say it's pretty good :D

KEV - I believe it was the Galaxy Truffle that got the chop. I could be wrong though.

MICHELLE - Request noted.

THEA - Good investigating! Like I said in my review it was a little fruity tasting so to hear there are potential links with apricot doesn't surprise me at all. That is such a good idea about the stickers for the olympics ... everyone loves a good sticker collection don't they :D

ALAN - I remember us swapping e-mails about these possibly two years ago! It was so nice of Fiona to provide us with them. I think that was one of the longest standing reader requests .... like I always say ... I get there in the end don't I haha!

FIONA - I can't thank you enough for sending these across Fiona. Please don't feel obliged sending anything more I feel awfully guilty taking it from you. I still find it amazing that I have readers from as far wide as the UAE it's quite incredible.

Thanks for the feedback folks - Keep it coming.

Quality review m8. You got any other UAE chocolates to show us or are you done with them now?
I think you should be forced to keep trying them until you find something that you think is at least just as good as we get here in the UK :P Thats me being mean though lol

ken said...

Whilst I'm not sure they would be the best chocolates I would ever have I'm still feeling pretty intrigued as to how these would compare to our own Galaxy. The side-by-side testing doesn't sound like it reflects well on the arab chocolate but you never know, some of us might prefer it over our own. It could be down to individual taste.

Xen10 said...

It would be cool to hear whether the normal Jewells are just as bad/good (which ever way you look at it) or whether its just these ones that weren't as good as they should have been.
Do you think there is a possibility they got affected by the air travel they had to make to make it in to your possesion Jim?

David said...

@Gemma its a bit ambitous wanting them to make a white chocolate block when they don't even make a normal white chocolate bar don't you think.

Chris said...

You see the cricket on monday Jim? Epic finish to a great match eh!? Are you going to see any of it at all? It looks like it is going to be the best test series ever.

Patrick said...

They got some random flavours involved here haven't they. I'm not sure these flavours would do very well if put infront of your average UK person. Sesame? Qamardeen and Coffee wouldn't be top of many peoples preferences I imagine.

Anonymous said...

hydrogenated oils? Err no thank you. I would rather not posion myself.

KP said...

You haven't been very successful with your chocolates from that region have you? I don't think I will be chasing any of these but that doesn't mean I don't like seeing the reviews of them. I do like seeing how these things change from country to country.

Anonymous said...

I to have always wondered why mars have never done a galaxy box of chocs. There's been a dairy milk selection out for ages now, a Galaxy one just makes sense if you ask me. I know just as many people that like galaxy vs dm.

Neil said...

Poor old galaxy having to follow the Valrohna chocolate from Monday. This may have been average anyways, but anything following that from Monday was always going to struggle. For what it's worth I think its a cool mixutre of different flavours.

Jim said...

SCOTT - No more UAE chocolate for the minute. I would be more than happy to try some more mind you.

XEN - They could possibly have been affected by the air miles!? Would have it effected every single chocolate exactly the same way!? Hmmm I'm unsure about that.

CHRIS - Indeed I did it was fantastic. I'm looking forward to the start of the 2nd test tomorrow.

KP - Successful??? Perhaps not! Intriguing and interesting to do??? Certainly!

Thanks everyone

JIM

I wonder if the Palm Oil found in the UAE Galaxy line is to prevent the chocolate from getting bloom/discoloration in the heat of the UAE?

So I decided to look up on google about this weird lookin box of choccies I have here. Got them from b&m initially thinkin they were galaxy. Bought 2 boxes & im so sure the one my sister has is called galaxy! Mine is called dove. Its not the same selection as reviewed here so must be the original selection you guys are talking about. Shaped like galaxy, with the curve. Looks like galaxy, has a similar creaminess but taste different! Very strange..
