August 24th: Lindt Lindor Milk

Kcal ??? Fat ??? Fat(sats) ??? Carbs ???

Having now tried every Lindt Lindor truffle flavour under the sun, yesterday I thought it was about time to try the bar version of the range. Indeed I found this Lindt Lindor Milk chocolate tablet in my local Sainsburys for the sum of £1.99 making it a more economical option versus the small packets of truffles you usually get for 99p. On the packaging this bar was described as 'milk chocolate with a smooth-melting filling' and it certainly had high standards to live up to considering the original Lindt Lindor truffles scored a pretty hefty 8.5 out of 10 - for links to all my Lindor reviews See HERE.

This product came in a 150.0g tablet that was sectioned in to 24 seperate blocks in a 3x8 format. When you think of Lindt chocolates bars I guess the first thing that springs to mind is the Excellence selection which is traditionally presented in sophisticated looking black and white packaging. Well Lindt chose to do things a little differently here and as you can see above this Lindor bar was wrapped in a brighter looking red packet with white coloured trim. Personally I thought it still looked pretty smart and I was glad to see that the inner chocolate was familiar looking with the Lindt logo branded across all of the blocks. In regards to smell the chocolate I must admit the chocolate wasn't quite as strong or distinctive smelling as previous Lindt offerings though there were still pleasant enough sweet dairy suggestions.

If I had rated this bar on the first few blocks I tried I would probably have scored it far worse as it took a few helpings before I really felt like I was tasting a chocolate anywhere near Lindt's usual quality. Elaborating on this further my initial reaction to the very first few blocks I tried was that this was a very fast melting chocolate that didn't offer up a great deal of flavour. Indeed just like the Lindor truffles the centre filling of the blocks was extremely smooth and fast melting on the tongue, however unlike the centre of Lindor truffles it offered up little or nothing in terms of flavour. Thankfully the more blocks of this I ate the more I felt like I was getting from the outer milk chocolate, and I did eventually feel like I was getting a fair degree of milky cocoa flavours. Admittedly these flavours were all too short lived for my liking and I quite easily ate 50.0g without taking a great deal of satisfaction from it. Personally I felt that this bar not only lacked the depth of flavour of the truffle equivalents but also the certain prestige factor that comes with the truffle format.

Overall I don't think it takes a genius to work out I was disappointed by this Lindt offering and it isn't often I say that now is it! This chocolate had one major issue and that was the fact that it offered up only a fraction of the flavour that the equivalent Lindor truffles do. Whilst it did have the same silky smooth feeling centre it failed to retain the same depth in taste and I just didn't feel that the cream flavours were as pronounced as you usually get with Lindt milk chocolate. To be honest I can't see a single reason why you would want to swap the usual Lindt Lindor Truffles for this blocked version. They simply don't look as good, don't taste as good and basically don't have that special truffle feel that you get in abundance with the originals. If someone offers you this bar as a present I wouldn't turn your nose up at it but at the same time I wouldn't go choosing it over the traditional Lindor truffles.

7.1 out of 10

I bought this once and can confidently say I never will again. Shaped as a bar it just came across and greasy and unnatural feeling. Its hard to put your finger on why it works as truffles but not a bar but the truffles are x100 better.

Nick said...

This looks so dull compared to the normal lindors. Price wise it may work out a little better but apart from that there's no reason why I think anyone should be choosing it over the individual chocs.

Steven_F said...

Ignore me If I'm off on my own on this one but wasn't there once a blue coloured one of these? I could well be wrong cause there aren't any blue coloured Lindor.

Andy said...

Ive tried lots of chocolate truffles in my time yet none come close to replicating the lindor experience. I wouldn't of thought it would be the same in a bar though.

Paul said...

I used to think Lindt made well posh chocolate but now you have shown me the light Jim I know it's not that special at all anymore. I think it was because when ever I saw it in the shops it was always one of the most epensive chocolates but now its come down in price so much. They were even playing the one pound game on their big bars not long ago. You would have been very hard pressed to find that 5 years back.

Sam said...

Have you seenthe new Excellence flavours Jim.
If I'm correct they have now added 3 new new ones.
1. Touch of Sea Salt
2. 75% Mild
3. Caramel (dark chocolate).
Why not review them all in a mini lindt roundup boyo?

I too struggle to see the role this bar should be playing for Lindt. In the places I shop they have recently taken out quite a few of the Lindt bars but kept this one in there. I would have liked to have seen them can this one and then bring in more of the lindt petit desserts. For some reason or other they seem to have disappeared completely.

Before I got properly into my chocolates I used to think that Lindts lindors were the be all end all.
For the first time in months I had one of the red wrapper milk chocolates one and I couldn't believe how poor I thought it was now. They hardly taste of anything and the way they melt is so fatty and lardy. I felt like the chocolate left a layer of grease on the top of my mouth. I

Great review Jim. I love the way I can see inside the block. The layer of chocolate filling looks very thin.
Is it genuinely noticeable? I'm one of those people that much prefers the fillings to the plain chocolate bits.

no bits and bobs today then :( I hope you post it on Friday. A week without one of them feels like a week where we are missing out on something.

Jim forget all about your silly football for once. How amazing was the cricket huh!? I can't believe we won 4 nil in the end. We demolished the best team in the world supposedly. I can't believe I'm saying this given how things were about ten years ago, but this team make me feel proud to be an Englishmen.

Ed said...

I have never got the fuss about Lindor chocolates. To me they have also seemed a bit tastless. Lol I know I'm in the minority here don't worry.

Will said...

Just over a seven!?????? Are you kidding Jim! Lindor is the nicest bunch of chocolates going. I think you need to try this one again mate.

Tim said...

This makes sense to me.
Why anyone want to buy this boring bar versus the usual ones. It doesn't make much sense to me, though I'm sure there will be some money saving to be made.

Sakura_MOON said...

I used to love lindt lindor but ever since they took away the mint ones I haven't looked upon them the same. I wish someone from Lindt would come here and make a statement as to why this happened. The mint ones were so under rated, I want an explanation dammit =)

Craig said...

At first glance I thought the packaging looked identical to that of Niedereggers chocolate marzipan. Of course I see the differences now but take a look, I don't think they are too far off each other at all.

Anonymous said...

How can they call it Lindor if it comes as a bar? I think this is the perfect example of a chocolate make taking things one step to far. I don't see the point in this one at all.

Rebecca said...

I've had the dark chocolate version of the Lindor bar and it wasn't bad. The only thing I will say about it is that if you want the lindor taste and want it in a more convenient way to carry around then I guess it was good for that. Apart from that I can't see why anyone would buy it over the normal truffles.

KP said...

This one must only be sold in particular outlets because like some of the other peeps I've not seen or heard of it b4 I saw it on here today.

There have been loads of new stories that you need to add to your news page Jim. Heres a selection of the ones I found for you ......

http://www.talkingretail.com/products/product-news/kp-launches-exciting-new-range-of-nibbles
http://www.talkingretail.com/products/product-news/mars-launches-new-triple-choc-bar

Don't you think the nibbles + Mars bar sound well exciting. I'm espec looking forward to getting the mars.

Ollie said...

I would give this a much lower score personally. When I had it about a yr or so ago I ate it on what was quite a hot day and it had turned in to mulch.

It just doesn't work as a bar, just stick with the truffles if you like your lindors I say.

Anonymous said...

Crikey I've never seen Lindor in its bar form before. Is it new or just not sold in many places?

Chris said...

Well well well. Despite all your banter Mr Jim the cricket didnt prove all that straight forward after all did it ;)
I knew Sachin was going to play a special innings, just not quite special enough.
The rest of them were just pathetic lol.

Hollie said...

The only time I eat or use Lindt choc is when I'm homebaking where I often use their dark chocolate (I think it's better tasting than the cooking chocolate stuff).

I should try some of their flavoured chocolates out but it's one of those chocolate makes that makes me feel overwhelmed by exactly how much they have. I don't have the foggiest idea where to start with it if I did.

Rachel said...

Hey hun. For the life of me I can't think of one reason why anybody would ever choose to consider a lindor truffle like this and not in the traditional way. The shape of the chocolate and the way you go from the crack of the outer bit to the soft gooey insides is what lindors are all about. It just wouldn't be the same eaten in boring blocks I don't think.

Looking at the £ per g ratio of the truffles vs this bar its quite clear that the bar works out ten times cheaper than the truffles do.

Lol maybe not ten times, thats an exaggeration. It definitely works out cheaper though.

Interesting stuff Jim, I havent seen Lindor sold in this way b4.

Martin said...

I'm going a little off subject here but has anyone tried the Lindors that come in the light blue and silver wrappers?

I believe they were supposed to be cookies and cream flavour. Whatever they were they were absolutely delish. If you like the white chocolate ones I can't stress enough that you need to buy some.

Sally said...

I would only bother trying this if it came as a white chocolate one.

Charlie said...

In the nicest possible way .... this bar needs to be taken out of my sight :-)
Nothing can replace the lovelyness of a lindor truffle melting away in the mouth. It blasphemy even considering that it has a role in a bar form. How very very silly of them to do.

Tony said...

Good on you for getting back to reviewing some more widely purchaseable chocs Jim. Lol about time to, all of the things recently have been more niche and not things I could buy even if I wanted to. I might even buy one of these sometime soon just to see how I rate it vs the normal chocolates. Nice one mate.

Anonymous said...

Is this one of your old reviews or something? I swear they stopped making this one a little while ago.

Umer said...

Such a good review I agree with you 100% about it not being as special as the originals.

Nathan said...

If the point of this was to make a more affordable way of getting lindor then this is a very silly thing for them to have done.
You can now find lindors so cheap it renders this bar pointless. Add in the fact this bar looks half as spectacular than the truffles and you have to conclude that theire isn't much going for it.

Gaz said...

They have done some very stupid stuff on lindors recently. Taking away the peanut flavour ones was bad enough but then following up with taking the mint ones away just months after was madness. What is the most annoying for me is that they now no longer do the Lindor pick a mix in my Whittards shop. I used to abuse that when I had the money.

Michael said...

The things you post on Wednesday always pale in comparison to the Hotel Chocolat chocolates you review on the mondays.
It's a tough spot to fill each week lol.

John said...

I agree with the other guys today Jim you've done another swell job of summing this bar up very succinctly.

Jordan said...

@Richard no you aren't wrong.

A 200 g box of truffles works out as £2.25 / 100 g
A 100 g bar = £1.83 / 100 g

Daisy said...

Its been way too long since I last had my fill of lindor truffles. They used to be something I bought nearly every week but since I started reading this site im always trying new things so I can cross check them with the reviews :) Im looking out for the twirl minis this week. I want to see if they are as good as proclaimed last weekend.

I seldom see this bar anymore. It used to be one of the most popular lindt bars in the local shop I used to work in but we are talking five or six years ago now. I think they have been more focused on pushing their excellence ones now because they have at a minimum double the amount of bars they had before. Just last week I saw they had a new one which had salt in it.

Peter said...

I always think you can make a case for most things existing and meeting some sort of consumer need but for the life of me I can't see what this one is achieving here.

I see some people have mentioned convenience but I'm struggling to see why/how it's any easier to cart around than a few truffles.
If anything I would say it was the opposite.

Anonymous said...

Have you had one of the new mars bars yet? When do we get a review of it?

Nigel said...

Hey J

I wasn't too far off with my 2-1 forecast for Monday. I thought all your youngster were terrific. I h8 to say it but it looks like Old Ferguson has done it again picking the good ones :( How depressing.

I wouldn't ever bother buying this one. What I find funny is that it doesn't even claim to try say it does anything better then the normal truffles lol. You sure they still sell this?

Cheers
N

Excellent review J. The changes you remark on didn't bother me in the slightest though retrospectivelly speaking I can see what you are talking about with some of your points. 7.1 may just be a wee bit on the harsh side.

Claire said...

Im with Sal. if they did one of these with their white chocolate then I would be interested but because its just the plain milk one I think I can do without. Fab review though love.

Hey Jim! I haven't posted in a while (although I've been keeping an eye on the reviews), and thought it about time I did.
I tried this bar years ago and was unimpressed too. I've gone off Lindor truffles now aswell, I find them far too sickly. I do however like the white choc ones now and then, just for the vanilla filling.

Ria said...

Hey Jim, still loving the reviews!!! I do still have a soft spot for the smooth, creamyness of Lindt but have yet to try this bar, despite it always standing out on the shelves. I knew before reading, by looking at the picture, that your opinion would be that it was lacking in flavour compared to the truffles. The amount of soft centre in the bar looks measley compared to the truffles. I will probably still try it sometime, if it's on offer because the impression I get is that it's still a nice enough bar (well it is Lindt afterall), just it's a big disappointment compared to the truffle format that it's meant to be "paying homage" to.

Linzyloo said...

Unlike everyone else, I actually see why Lindt decided to make a bar form of this. First of all, it's slimmer and easier to slip into your handbag. Secondly it's cheaper, and thirdly, some people just enjoy a nice bar! Personally this really appealed to me as I love a good 100g/150g bar of chocolate :) something about the size, shape and feel of it just makes it feel luxurious.

However I tried this bar when I was in America so I know that it's not that good. It's almost as if the outer chocolate is waxy and struggles to melt to let you in at the soft centre. It's definitely not their usual milk chocolate recipe. I used to like Lindor truffles but now they just feel like balls of oil :(

Rodzilla said...

Pretty surprising to hear that the bar version is so drastically different from the truffles. Thanks for the heads up!

BJ said...

I love Lindor truffles, but I must admit, when I saw the cross section of this review I was a little sceptical on how this was going to work. In the bar format, you cant get that same soft truffle filling, so the taste is obviously going to be lacking in comparison. I might have given it a try, but given your review, I think I'll just be sticking to the ball truffles.

Hi All,

This is a review that I have been meaning to have appear on the site for ages but it's only just made it up as I got given another bar of it last week by a friend.

Again my response to you all this evening is going to have to be very rushed given my time pressures at work.

Reading all your responses it seems to me like the general feeling behind this one is that it is not particularly fulfilling a need for any of you. A lot of you seem to be confused as to what role or time/place where it would provide a product benefit over the normal Lindor truffle chocolates. As I stated in my review I happen to agree with you guys.

STEVEN - I've never seen a blue Lindor bar.

SAM - I've reviewed the top two already (see the archives) and will have a review of the Caramel dark coming in the next few weeks. Don't you worry :D I'm on top of the situation :D

FIONA - Not very noticeable taste wise but it's key to the mouth feel aspect.

VIJAY - Haha people on here are starting to talk to me more about sport than they are chocolate :D I don't mind, you can obviously tell its a big passion of mine. The cricket was indeed great wasn't it. I really enjoyed the series though I'm sure every englishmen did :D Bring on the one dayers :D

CRAIG - I see the similarities but you could say that about a lot of bars these days.

GOLDEN - Thanks for all the stories. I have added most of them to the news page already. Watch this space.

ANON - This bar has been out years now.

CHRIS - The Indian collapse was pretty special huh :D Almost up to England 90s standards haha :D

RICHARD - Come on chap you are slacking with your pricing analysis :D Jordan's gone and shown you up today :D

MARTIN - You are talking about the stracciatella flavour. I'm also a big time fan of them. Have a look under the Lindt tag for my review of them.

GAZ - Are you sure they have stopped doing the peanut ones? I thought they were still in the mixed multi-pack of them.

ANON - A very kind reader has provided me with the new Mars Triple Choc. Review coming very soon.

NIGEL - Indeed your prediction were not far off at all. I got given a bar of this only last week so yes it is still selling.

PHIL - Well as long as you are still around and reading I have no issue with that chap :D Lindt are very capable when it comes to their white chocolate aren't they! Have you tried the new 'with a touch of vanilla' excellence bar?

Thanks for the comments and feedback today everyone. Apologies for the lack of bits and bobs this week. I will make sure I have one good to go for next.

JIM

This must have somehow completely past me by because I never knew this even existed.
Looking at it I dont think it is a bar I would ever have bought anyway. I've no problem with the original Lindors so I don't get why they would make it in to a bar in the first place. It just strikes me as counter intuitive, its sorta like they are aknowledging the fact that lindor truffles aren't good enough.

Josh said...

I like the idea of making Lindors more convenient to eat for a single person but I can't imagine a situation where you need to buy someone and gift where you would choose to give them this bar instead a box of the normal truffles.

mel said...

It must just be the time when you yourself fancy Lindor chocolates but don't wish to feel sad because you are buying truffles for yourself. I wouldn't ever buy it, but I can kinda see where it slots in the wider picture.

Patrick said...

I think this is a relatively fair enough review here.
This is a bar I've also had a few times and it's never convinced me that it was any better than average or worth buying instead of the normal truffles. It's not anything bad per se, it's just that it doesn't do anything new or worth talking about.

Anonymous said...

If I could only eat one type of truffle for the rest of my days it would blatantly be milk chocolate lindors. I don't care for the black coloured ones as much, but the red ones are a diff story completely. They are just lush.

What a pesemisstic bunch we have on here lol.
Come on guys its not like its hurting anyone is it? I don't see why you are all being so damming about a bloomin choc bar. I swear most of you are just negative about things for the hell of it. You need to lighten up some of you.

Liam said...

I love lindors but this bar version just sounds pointless. I would rather lindt had put efforts into making another flavour of lindor than making existing ones into different ways of eating it.

Robbie Els said...

I hae nothing against this bar in particular but it annoys me we get rehash bars like this when they take away things like the coffee excellence bar :-( I'm still very bitter about that btw.

It infuriates me when these companies make silly decisions like that. Why take it away in the first place?
