August 3rd: Thorntons Cloudy Lemonade

Kcal 567 Fat 36.7g Fat(sats) 22.5g Carbs 52.0g (per 100.0g)

I've been waiting to write this review for a fair while now as I first got to sample this bar right at the start of the year when I was asked for some feedback from the guys at Thorntons. This Cloudy Lemonade bar is one of the three limited editions being released this year by Thorntons who are celebrating their 100 years of chocolate production. First up in May we had the Thorntons Dark Chocolate with Rose (See HERE) - today it was the turn of the Cloudy Lemonade which came billed as 'Lemon flavoured white chocolate with popping candy'. This bar is now available in all Thorntons stores including their online one - See HERE.

This bar came in a 80.0g size and was packaged in the familiar Thorntons glossy square box format. The choice of colour (pastel yellow), was the obvious one for this bar, I'm starting to think Thorntons might want to redesign the packaging for this range - they are going to run out of colours soon enough aren't they :D Inside the chocolate was stored in a thin foil wrapper and was decorated and sub-sectioned in the familiar fashion consistent across this range. Aesthetically the bar had a nice complexion and there were visible pieces which looked like rice krispies dispersed throughout.

Previously when I've tried white chocolate and citrus combinations there have times when I have commented that they had smelt cheesey and nasty but this wasn't the case here. I didn't waste too much time taking in the smells on offer but the lemon element was fragrant enough to noticeable when the foil packet was undone. From the very first piece I tasted I noticed that the chocolate was ever so slightly different from my previous experience with it at the start of the year. Starting with the consistencies though, it was still a very tasty white chocolate, and it's smooth cream based vanilla noted flavours were the perfect foil for the sharper citrus lemon oil element. As aforementioned there was an unfortunate change from the initial version of this bar I tried. Disappointingly for my own preference Thorntons had dialled up the popping candy element, and had noticeably increased both the size and portioning of the horrible stuff. Unlike some other chocolates with it in before, it didn't 100.0% ruin the experience for me, but the crackling sensation at the back of my throat was really not welcome.

Overall although I was disappointed by the minor changes from the original bar I tried, I still found this to be a pretty good standard white chocolate. I've said this in many reviews before, but Thorntons for some reason seem to really know what they are doing when it comes to white chocolate. It's not my favourite chocolate type but as far as Thorntons go it's one of things I think they do best. This Cloudy Lemonade was no exception, and it was thoroughly enjoyable for it's smooth flowing creamy flavours. The lemon element was additionally well integrated and came off as both real tasting and balanced - it was just that damn annoying popping candy. I don't want to criticise too much as this is a point of personal preference rather than a glaring production error. If you think you can handle the popping sensation then I see little reason why this wouldn't be a thoroughly enjoyable chocolate for you.

Is this out now or coming soon?

What a sensible flavour to make for summer. You can't say Thorntons haven't done their research here. I know they aren't the most popular brand for people on this site but I think they have made some really good strides recently.
I was so surprised hearing their last quarter sales were down so significantly. If you had asked me I would of said they were back on track after a stick period.

I thought you usually saved new products to come up on Monday? Its a nice surprise to this come up today. Thanks for the review buddy.

The idea behind this one is cool. It's promising to see this sort of thing coming out of thorntons HQ. Nice one guys (lol I hope they are reading).

David said...

Respect to you here Jim I know you couldn't of been fancying this one too much. I think you've provided us all with a fair reflection of what it has to offer if you like this sort of thing. Thanks for the review.

Kim said...

Well well this just goes to show they can come up with new ideas and chocolates if they put their minds to it! There are no excuses now.

Golden_Touch said...

Did you ever give an opinion on this story about Thorntons Jim? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-13/thorntons-sales-for-two-months-to-june-25-fall-8-4-1-.html. Losing 20.6 million pounds in sales is a major thing. It sounds to me like they are in big strife.

JK said...

Sweet work here J. It obvs wasn't perfect for you but for the rest of us that like white chocolate I think it might one worth giving a go.

Daisy said...

I'm going to take your score of 7 and add another 1.5 on it ;)
I thought the popping candy was a nice addition myself. I wouldn't want to have it in every chocolate I buy but it's something different from the norm. It's not so excessive that it spoils the chocolate. Not that I think anyway.

Dx

Paul said...

Was the lemon part of this created by bits of lemon fruit? lemon juice? or both?????
I hope they used real fruit content and not artifical flavourings. It sucks when they do that.

Anonymous said...

Have you ever given anything above a 7 for a white chocolate. You always seem to give them worse marks compared to milk and dark ones.

Chris said...

What did you think to England winning the 2nd test then mate? I didn't see that result happening after what went down in our first innings.

We have got to be the best team in the world now. We are demolishing them and they are number 1.

Anonymous said...

Are you seriously saying that some measely popping sherbet put you off the whole chocolate bar? That's so stupid, you must be a sensitive little flower Jim.

Claire said...

This is one of the chocs that I will HAVE to buy as soon as I see it. After reading about those lemon meringue truffles that Thorntons started making I had to buy them and since I've been hooked. I hope this is just like a version of them but in a bigger bar form. It sounds like it well could be :) Thanks for the review my lovely.

Wkd to see Thorntons try something new. I've not had a chocolate with lemon and popping candy before. It would be a nice one to try out.

Andrew said...

Ace review mate. This chocolates are normally outstanding value for money. Just over £1 for nearly 100 grams is brilliant considering the quality of some of the chocolates.

Lee said...

Some of these panel chocolates I've tried haven't been that nice but others have been outstanding. My favourites so far include the tonka bean, belgian white and the pistachio - I hope this one joins that shortlist of my best ones.

Oh and if anyone is wondering I was disappointed with the fudge one and rose flavour if I remember correctly. The last one didn't fill me with confidence for these next two limited edition but I think this one matches my own tastes much better. I'm looking forward to trying it big time now.

Hey J

Cool review of this Thorntons choc mate. Its not the sort of flavour I would ever buy but it's nice seeing that they are up to better things and adding to the parts of their range that people want them to develop and not the cheap stuff they were doing way too much of.

Are you keeping up to date with all the football transfers? It's gone very quite on the Liverpool front. I think all our business is done now. You still think Man U will sign Sneijder. I hope you don't hes quality.

Cheers

Thorntons are so blatant copying Ritter Sport like this. Next thing we know they will be claiming they are German lol

Peter said...

I think Thorntons have mucked up this 100 year celebration thing.
Without sites like this I wouldn't of had a clue they were 100 years old at all. They have such a huge marketing opportunity to play off and they aren't doing anything with it apart from releasing these 3 bars + one box of chocolates that costs £100 that no one will buy.

It's a shame because it's worth us all celebrating I think. It's not common that a company surives that long.

Mysterio6_19 said...

They should have gone for a cola flavour to go alongside it. That would have been 100% uniuque. Better yet a bar half Lemonade, half Cola would of been the bomb.

Craig said...

Jim you said they were doing three limited editions. Do we know what the third is yet?

Ian said...

I think this sounds delicious. As soon as I see it I will definitely be buying this one. Thanks for the heads up on it Jim.

Stu said...

I groaned when I saw this had popping candy in. I'm not a fan of it either. I think it's so kiddie and pointless. I thought they only put it in chocolates to humour little children. I hardly think your average ten year old will be spending their pocket money on thorntons chocolates. I think they are ten times more likely to be buying pick-a-mix or things like freddos. More to the point are adults going to buy their kids this type of chocolate ... the answer is no ... never!

All this begs the question why put the popping candy in there at all!!! Idiots.

Henry said...

Ack! Come on Jim you promised us one bits and bobs review a week. Why have we got this thorntons one today? Could it not have waited a bit longer.

Umer said...

I think you are right about the packaging. I think it does need an upgrade from what it is.
I'm not saying it's bad or anything, I just think it needs a change, its been the same for years now.

Rachel said...

Shock horror. A white chocolate that you kinda liked Jim. It's a shame they spoilt it for themselves with the popping candy thing. They did themselves no favours there did they.

Are they going to be making this flavour in the smaller bar sizes? I bought a load of those smaller bars to try out the rest of these square shaped chocolates. It was a v gd way of being able to tell if you liked them before buying the bigger ones. I hope they do it for this one to.

Lucy said...

IF there hadn't of been any popping candy what sort of score do you think we would have been looking at?
Neither of the two LEs have been given good scores yet. Looking at them both you have just rated them averagely at 7. Was it really worth the effort of making them you think? When you factor in the time and manpower it takes to create a new flavours then you might not think so if Thorntons. I hope it doesn't put them off making new flavours for the future

Anonymous said...

This wouldn't of been the first flavour combination I would have asked for but it's a fair shout as its at least something new we haven't seen before.

Big Ren said...

Did you see my suggestion to do an interview with someone from Thorntons jim? I forgot to say in my comment that I think you should make it that if you do you give us the chance to send in our questions first so they can be answered. That would be mega cool, I've got a lot of stuff I want to ask Thorntons about.

Sally said...

I've only ever had good times with thorntons white chocolate so this will be a flavour I will try some day. I don't think have popping candy in there is ideal but its not something that will change what I think.

Justin said...

It doesn't make sense having popping candy in cloudy lemonade. Cloudly lemonade is the traditional stuff which isn't meant to have any fizz in it. For a supposed proud British company there isn't anything quite like getting an all time British classic flavour wrong. Geeze what dummies.

Xen10 said...

I'm a little scpetical to wether white chocolate and lemon will work out. Hmmmmmm only one way to find out I guess lol.

Joel said...

In the review jim says its the second of three LEs. What was the third one again? I think I remember him saying it was some sort of cake, I think maybe victoria sponge. Can anyone remember :S

Lauren said...

Why do Thorntons never advertise themselves? You see adverts for cadbury and lindt etc but I've not ever seen an advert for Thorntons. If they reminded me they existed every so often they would probably be more top of mind when I fancy some chocolate. I often end up just forgetting about them unless I walk past their shop or read about them on here.

Pattra said...

Oooooh this sounds lovely. I expect it's one of those chocs that if you put in the fridge to chill for a little while it will be all the more special.

I'm not a lover of popping candy but I can deal with it without it bothering me too much. I'm not fussy like you Mr Jim :P

Francesca said...

I bought a white chocolate bar from thorntons yesterday but it melted into mulch before I got time to eat it.

They didn't invest in air conditioning in my local shop i don't think. The weather isn't chocolate firnedly at the mo.

Andy said...

Cool review Jim thanks for doing it.
I haven't bought anything from thorntons for ages now. I can't even remember the last time I did. I see the score isn't anything special but I do fancy it. I will have to see what mood I'm in when i'm next in one of their stores, it's going to be hard convincing me off my usual ginger chocolate.

Tim said...

Kudos to Thorntons here. This one has a credible shout for being a new flavour for chocolate. I don't think I've ever seen a cloudy lemonade chocolate before. It's going to worth trying just for that alone. Thinking outside the box is the way forward. Nice one Thorntons! Kudos!

Jack said...

White chocolate, popping candy and thorntons - now there is a chocolate mission recipe for disaster if ever there was one lol.

Rebecca said...

If this chocolate is half as nice as those lemon meringue truffles then I desperately want to get a bar of it. if they hadn't of put popping candy in it the rating looks like it would have been ten times better. It's only the texture criteria bit dragging it down if you look closely.

Neil said...

Did you get any other people in your family to try it? I can't help but think you weren't the best person to try this knowing you dont like 1. white chocolate 2. popping candy lol. You've never said anything about not liking lemon before :) if you don't like lemon then we have the full hattrick lol.
I would be interested to hear what the other people you potentially shared it with thought about it.

KP said...

I wasn't a fan of that rose bar but this cloudy lemonade sounds ten times better. If my local thorntons doesn't have it in next time I'm in there I think I might just order a few from them online. Their delivery times were awesome last time I ordered something for a friends birthday. They delivered next day delivery and I didn't have to pay more for it or anything.

Ricky said...

Before anyone asks all of these are line priced at £1.09. Just because they are special edition it doesn't mean Thorntons try flog them for more. I think thats pretty commendable myself.

Gareth said...

I don't get how they can make lemon flavoured white chocolates. Wouldn't the acidity of the fruit make the chocolate curdle and do funny things when its being produced?

Emma said...

I knew it wasn't going to get a great score because of what it had in it (popping c and white chocolate) but it sounds like it could be one that I like. Now I think about it a score of 7 from you for this type of chocolate has to be a good thing right? Considering this would probably have been your idea of chocolate hell I don't think its done badly at all.

Mike said...

I'm with you on the packaging here Jim. I think it could do with a little update to spruce it up a tad. Just having a colour and writing to state the flavour is a little on the boring side. They could at least put some pictures of what the flavour is on there to make it come to life.

Jim said...

Hi All,

My boring old day job is stopping me from spending as much time as I would like to on the site at the moment.

I've read the feedback today and the sentiment I get is that there is a lot of you who are thinking very positively about this particular chocolate.

Like I said in the review my utter hatred of popping candy turned me off this one, though if it's not something that bothers you at all and you like white chocolate then I say go for it!

Please forgive me for not being able to respond to you in as much detail as I would like ....

ROB - Out now.

GOLDEN - Thanks for the story - I did indeed give my thoughts. Check some of the old Thorntons reviews.

PAUL - Lemon essence oil I believe.

CHRIS - The cricket was fantastic. We deserve to be number 1 in the world.

NIGEL - I'm keeping my fingers crossed over Sneijder. He's the missing cog from United I think.

CRAIG/JOEL - Bakewell Tart is the 3rd one.

BIG REN - I have seen your request and I'm investigating possibilities.

JUSTIN - Are you sure cloudy lemonade has to be uncarbonated? I'm not sure it does you know. I think i have had it fizzy before.

Those of you asking about Bits and Bobs will be pleased to hear there is one upcoming on Friday :D

Again apologies for my abrupt responses.

If the lemon isn't too strong I can see this coming off rather well with me. I don't like highly acidic foods but if it happens to be just a twist of lemon I think it could pair really well with white chocolate. I might just have to give this one a go, especially if they are still running with the 3for£5 offer.

Jade said...

White chocolate and lemon? Thats a strange mixture.
Now I think of it chocolate and lemon isn't one that is seen often at all. Thats a head scratcher that one. Why are lemon chocolates so infrequent? I'm struggling to think of another example. I'm off to check under the lemon label now lol.

Charlie said...

Good review mate. I know you think these bars are ripping off ritter but lets be honest, your average person who lives in England wont even know who ritter are.

Its just common sense if you are thorntons isn't it. All they are doing is looking at somehthing that has been successful abroad and adapted it to our market. I don't have any problem with it at all personally.

chocolate matron said...

Hey hunny. I can't believe I'm saying this but you've reviewed another little something from thorntons that I'm all for trying. Until recently I used to dislike thorntons (overpriced tat!) but having read some of the recent posts you've done you've persuaded me to give some of these new things they are making a try. I think since that new head guy has come in they have been making some really nice things that are far departed from some of the crappy rubbish they were producing the years before (thorntons moments etc). This is embarassing to admit but I'm almost excited about trying this, lol how sad.

Stan said...

Unfortunately I'm with Jim on this one. Having popping candy in there completely ruins this all for me. Its a shame as without it I might well of tried it.

Robbie Els said...

Man this one proper stacked it on your scoring chart because of the Popping stuff.
Are you sure it's really fair to downgrade it that much just because of the pc. It strikes me as a little harsh on thorntons personally.

BrizzleB said...

Why are people saying you can't get fizzy lemonade? Of course you can have you never had Schewepps before people???

Richard said...

I think some of you are mistaken saying this bar costs just over one pound.
If you look at their online store it actually costs £1.89. The good thing is though you can get 3 for £5 so that is at least a worthwhile deal. Lol its not likely you would just buy one in the first place if you are going to the effort of putting the online order in.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't have gone for the white chocolate pairing but it sounds like it's nice enough.
The idea of cream and lemon don't go together if you ask me. I think it would of been better to see what it had been like if they had gone down the milk choc route. Who knows! I could be wrong.

Golden_Touch said...

@Peter I think you are so right

Thorntons have dropped the ball with their celebrating of 100 years stuff.
They could have made such a bigger deal out of it if they could be bothered to do so. Releasing three new throughout the year isn't something that they wouldn't have done anyway is it! It just seems like a big waste of what is really a credible marketing opportunity. Not many (if any!!!) companies ever make it to 100 years these days. They have the chance to big themselves up and it looks like they are letting it pass them by.

OrEoMoNsTeR said...

I hope they continue to make new flavours next year even though there aren't any anniversaries to celebrate. It's a good model having a core set of flavours and then having new ones come in for short periods of time each. It means that you awalys have the golden old faves available but also something new if you fancy it. Well done Thorntons, it seems like they are using common sense for once.

Thea said...

I love the Thorntons bars. I wish they'd left the popping candy out but I would still like to try this. I see they sent an extra bar, it would be a neat competition flavor if it's still at large...surely being popping candy both were not needed for purposes of the review :D
@Mysterio6_19 are you thinking of the KitKat lemonade/cola duo bar? It's an awesome combination.
PS Ahem. Despite recent form I humbly beg to differ re who deserves to be #1 overall at cricket.

Jim said...

PLEATEE - You seem to be in luck. The 3for£5 is still running I believe. I think it might be ongoing you know.

JADE - No idea at the frequency of lemon chocolates being so low. I would have thought it just isn't a flavour that is top of peoples wanted lists.

CHOCOLATEMATRON - Good to hear I'm getting you to try new things.

RICHARD - Thanks for the clarity on the pricing.

THEA - When you do try it drop me a note with what you think. Are you a mind reader by anychance???? You might want to check out the site on Saturday to see what I mean by that :D

I liked this and think the flavor is a neat idea. The lemon flavor tasted real but I would have liked the chocolate slightly tarter and the popping candy less so. My classmate however said the popping candy was their favorite part and they 'quite liked' it but not white chocolate so wouldn't buy it again.
