As I mentioned in my review of the Milch + Weizenpops last week, Ritter Sport have somehow managed to squeeze in another two new flavour variants alongside their usual seasonal limited editions. The second new chocolate which I'm featuring today is the new Ritter Sport Noisette. Propositionally this bar sounded very familiar to a lot of previously reviewed Ritter bars that had featured on the site before - Nougat Praline (See HERE) and Nuss in Nugatcreme (See HERE). Looking at the scores of those two, this bar obviously had some promise as this was an area where Ritter had shown some competency in before. One thing this one did have me wondering though is whether the hazelnut is the national nut of choice in Germany!? I don't think there is another country in the world that flavours so many of their chocolates with this one ingredient - If someone can tell me why Germany loves hazelnuts so much I will send you a bar (best explanation wins!!)
Unlike last weeks bar which was a 250.0g beast, this Noisette is an addition to the standard 100.0g range. As usual the presentation of the chocolate was of a fair to good standard, though Ritter have had to double up on the choice of colour given for the wrapper - Keks + Nuss (See HERE). The Chocolate inside the plastic packet was branded with the usual Ritter logos and broke apart with a surprisingly soft, almost gooey ease. Aroma wise the chocolate was relatively mild in fragerance, however there was a detectable nutty hazelnut scent that was decently reassuring.
My worryingly ever improving German language reading skills led me to interpret that this was a bar consisting of simply 'milk chocolate with hazelnut mass' i.e. gianduja! Reading that, the soft yielding texture suddenly began to make sense and it struck me as extremely promising that the total bar consisted of over 13.5% hazelnut. Suffice to say I was expecting a big time hazelnut flavour hit and I guess on balance this it was delivered to a relatively good standard. Containing 30.0% cocoa the chocolate was it's ever fair self and delivered it's standard milky sweet flavour base. Just as the break up action suggested, the texture was very unique and this chocolate melted in true gianduja fashion with an infinite fast, smooth softness and almost a cool melting sensation. As the quick melt developed the hazelnut flavours became increasingly prevalent in their raw woodiness, however they were very short lived and thus severly limited the chocolates ability to feel totally satisfactory.
Overall this chocolate had some pretty obvious pros and cons that are well reflected in the scoring chart you see below. Working in it's favour, it tasted very nice and the promised hazelnut influence was brought to the party by the very generously portioned hazelnut mass ingredients. Another area where this bar had strength was also in the mouth feel that it had as it melted - anyone who has ever had gianduja chocolates will know what to expect here - spectacular! Unfortunately this Noisette bar did admittedly have it's shortcomings though with the most notable weakness being it's inability to serve as a fulfilling chocolate. Normally I feel that a 50.0g portion of any chocolate is a more than adequate amount, yet not at all with this one. There's no doubting this Noisette bar tastes great, but it's really not one you want to be eating if it is hunger satisfaction you are after.

I have no clue whatsoever why the germans put hazelnuts in all their chocolates but its so true.
Did you know that even the plain milk chocolate milka bar has them in! I would of thought that was a really silly thing to do myself because that immediatedly takes out anyone with a nut allergy to all their chocolate. I know its supposed to make their choc more unique but taking out a load of people from who can consume your product is never a good idea to start with.
Are you ever going to do a bits and bobs review again? I hope you do cause they are always so good.
I told you they were going to run out of ideas soon. This isn't anything new at all really is it!? Its just the same nougat/hazelnut cream bar but with a slightly different texture. I would of thought the average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the lot of hazelnut bars you mentioned in your write up.
I was thinking that a site run competition would increase my chances of winning but thats a ridiculous question hmph =[
The only reason I can possibly think of why they use hazelnuts all the time is because they are their favourite!?
How are you going to pick a winner for your comp? I don't think there is a reason why you can say hazelnuts are most popular. Is that just not your subjective opinion anyway!?
I think hazelnuts are popular in Germany because they are the cheapest nuts around. Even with products we have here in the UK, if they are flavoured with nuts its commonly done with hazelnuts because they are low cost.
You could of at least let us know when the winner is being drawn etc. The details of these competition are uber sketchy lol.
Yay you've done my two fave brands this week already :) :) :)
What are you posting about on Friday? If you do a Cadburys one we have a full house for me.
Wikipedia has been totally unhelpful winning this competition for me :( I was hopinh it was as easy as saying that they are most popular in Germany because they are the biggest producer of the hazelnut :( Unfortunately that isn't true though, it's Turkey. Please don't take this as my entry. Back to the drawing board for me on this one I think.
I don't have a clue why they use hazelnuts in everything but I sure wish they wouldn't. I can't stand the bits of nuts that get chaught my in my teeth. I swear its like the most annoying thing ever.
If anyone complains about this flavour being rubbish today they simply don't know good chocolate when they see it. It makes sense for Ritter to make a bar like this as it plays to their strengths. I wouldn't welcome seeing them try to do someting like a fancy pants dark chocolate or something stupid like that. Ritter appear to be a company that know what they are good at and they stick to it. Some other chocolate makers could do with taking that as advice.
Ah no. This competition is better than the normal crappy twitter ones but I don't have the answer :( thats just typical isn't it.
No offence Jim but why are ritter sport so keen on hearing what you have to say about their chocolates if they don't even sell them in England? I know they have one or two bars but its not like we ever get any of these new ones. It just seems a little pointless to me them getting your perspective when they aren't even going to be sold to the people who read the site.
p.s. Germany use hazelnuts because they like them more than almonds lol.
And here was me hoping that you were going to run a sensible competition for once. That was just too much to ask wasnt it.
You just know ritter can always be relied on when it comes to nutty chocolates. Their white choc with hazelnuts is by far one of my favourite bars at the minute. If it were easier to get hold of Im sure it would be my most commonly bought choc.
This sounds lovely. These sort of gianduja chocolates are beginning to become my favourites now. If I had the option I would welcome trying this one just as much as any other.
Hey hun. You will be glad to know I've been researching hazelnuts throughouly :) and i've come to the best answer possible.
I think they use hazelnuts the most because they are the leading importer of processed and unprocessed Turkish hazelnuts with a share of 27 percent of the total.
Bassicaly I think they are used a lot because they have a lot of them use :) I know that isn't the most complicated or scientific answer ever but its the best I can do.
Rxxx
I could so do one of these bars right now.
Im having a crappy day and a chocolate just like this one would be well in order. I will have to settle for the dairy milk :( :( :(
This is one sexy sounding choccie. I would do anything to give this one a try.
Thanks for the compeition jim. They use hazelnuts because they are the most liked nut in germany.
I think I preferred it when we just had to retweet a review of yours on Twitter lol. Things were a whole lot easier than this head scratcher. Lol I don't mean to be rude but do you even know the answer yourself or are you just going to guess waht the right answer is?
What did you make of the tennis the other night Jim? Did you enjoy it as much as I did?
This type of comp is so much better than the twitter ones cause you have to read the site to be able to enter. On your twitter comps you must get so many randoms
Dammit. So much for looking forward to the competition. A german person is blatantly going to win this now. I don't suppose anyone who lives in the uk is going to have the foggiest idea why they keen up the hazelnut so much. One would guess it just has something to do with it being the most popular nut type with German people?
Are you looking for a sensible answer or can a silly funny one be counted as the best? Lol I have plenty of silly funny ones if you want them lol. One of them would be that they use hazelnuts so often because the Germans are just nuts when it comes to chocolate :-) Lol I thought it was funny anyway.
If you win do you get the choice of what Ritter chocolate you want or do you just get this one?
Lol I would be happy with a bar of this but there are a few others I would rather try b4 it. The caramel + nut one is always the one that has interested me the most, thats the highest scoring ritter bar of them all on here isnt it.
The answer is blatantly because they are easiest nut to process with chocolate. Ritter aren't the only company that use a lot of hazelnuts. Pretty much all of the German companies like Schogetten, Lindt etc they all use it as the primary nut of choice.
I would love to give you an answer Jim but I don't want to take away the opportunity of winning from someone else. You know yourself the nut allergys that my kids have :( I'm afraid chocolates like this just simply aren't allowed in our household. It's just too risky what with how sensitive they are.
I know all the UK people just bitch and moan about not getting ritter sport chocolates but its so understandable because its not like we even get a close alternative.
They are so lucky in Germany - if they didn't have ritter then they would have the likes of lindt and schogetten to fall back on as back ups. The fact that none of those lot stock their full ranges on UK shores is just ridic. We have to settle for crappy brands like green and blacks.
Im not as desperate to try this one as a few of the others that theyve done lately but man, I bet this is still super tasty.
Is this just for readers in UK? If so boo boo you :P
I got a pack of that Tesco finest gianduja you recommended once and I literally blitzed through the whole lot during the duration of just one movie.
Like you said about this choc, they tasted amazing but it was way to easy just eating them all at once. The melting feeling is nice in one sense but it happens all too quickly and doesn't give much satisfaction. I like these things better when they are a bit grittier and have more bite to them.
Hey J
What did you think of Rafa vs Novak the other night (lol yeah I know them on first name basis lmao!!!!!). Personally I thought it was one of the greatest games of tennis I've ever seen. I'm not a great follower of it but I do watcth the big events most the time.
Man U tonight aswell. I take it you will be watching yeah? I predict a tough win because you will be resting people up for the Chelsea game.
The question for your competition is a toughie and i'm by no means sure at all, but I will have a guess at saying its because they are the cheapest nut that they can get in Germany. Thats normally the key fact for a company like ritter lol. Its all about the bottom line.
Cheers
N
Hmm I think its a bit cheeky them calling this new, it's hardly like its earth shattering new thinking on their part. Im starting to get the impression that less might be more from Ritter now. They should just save the effort and create fewer more varied flavours.
I don't know why they use hazelnuts all the time but I wish they wouldn't. I think they are the most boring nut of them all. I used to like them.
If you think ritter use haelnuts alot then you should take a look at Ferrero. I swear every single product that company has ever made has got hazelnuts of some sort in. Lol I think even their coconut truffles (raffalello white chocoaltes ones) have some sort of hazelnut in them.
I would be well up for getting one of these if I found them on sale. My first ever (and best) ritter chocolate I tried was the praline one in the dark blue wrapper and I feel in love with it straight away. I struggle to find it these days but whenever I do get a source I stock up on a few of them. Lol I once cleared this random local newsagent out of their entire stock (7 bars) and got the funniest look from the store clerk.
Gianduja chocolates are new on me. Ive never had one so the chance of winning here excites me tremedously.
Q. Why do Germans use hazelnuts so often?
A. The hazelnut is the most commonly used nut in Germany as they are the greatest importers of them from Turkey who produce the most of them. They import over 43% of Turkish hazelnut which is over 100 thousand tons each year!!!
I got all my stats from here http://ressources.ciheam.org/om/pdf/a37/99600294.pdf Impressive don't you think :0
Regards
Stu
Is this like a chocolate that is entirely like the texture of a lindor filling. Omg *droools* Ive been waiting for something like this for years. Not even the Lindt Lindor bar itself truley creates that famous feeling to 100% effect.
A hotel chocolate review followed by a ritter sport one. Well theres something we haven't seen before :P Im not complaining.
I'm not criticising but .... but .... bits and bobs posts?????? Whats happened to them m8? It was only a few weeks ago you said that we get one a weekn. Now we haven't had one for like a month. Lets have what the peeps want Jimbo.
p.s. I still love the Ritter reviews btw.
The amount of you complaining about the prize draw is frankly unbelievable.
What planet do you people live on eh? This guy is giving away chocolate for free. Its not as if hes asking you to pay to enter or it, or demanding you do either. For gods sake just act grateful for once some of you.
Im going to have a guess at them using hazelnuts most often because they were the favourite nut of the Ritter founder. Its a guess but its better than nothing.
Is this like your normal comps and only open to UK people? PLease say you will accept entries from elsewhere. Im only in Dublin! Its not far!
I think the germans use hazelnuts most often because they are stubborn and refuse to even contemplate that a different nut might actually taste better.
Oh joy yet another ritter bar we can look at with envy.
This all sounds great but come on Ritter what are you thinking with the colour of that wrapper. It looks horrible man. They are seriously running out of options now :) It can only be a matter of time before we get the electric pink one lol. I wonder which flavour its going to be that ends up with that.
I do not think it is a particular love of hazelnuts which affected their chocolate tastes, but the addition of hazelnuts in the first place (which works very well) is what moulded their tastes. Hazelnuts were added to bulk out the products because they are cheaper. That is why gianduja was made, because of cocoa taxes. For example, in a modern context, in the GDR cocoa had to be imported which cost lots of hard currency. Whereas some companies added peanuts, rice, or even crisp bread crumbs to the chocolate, the Nutella alternative called Nudossi was made with 33% hazelnuts (and in its resurrected form still is), compared with the western Nutella at around 10%. It tastes much better in my opinion!
Great competition :D I'm guessing the hazelnuts popularity might also be partly to do with the cultural factor, i.e. cause they're to German taste and also I remember Ritter brought out those seasonal flavors for Christmas last year and one was hazelnuts, wasn't something said in the comments about them being associated with/roasted for Christmas in Germany? It would be nice to hear from a German why.
Hi All,
It seems I may have been a little fuzzy around the edges with the competition today eh!? Haha crikey some of you don't hold back when I get things a little wrong do you :D I'm trying my best here all, I know I'm useless.
For clarity ....
1. Competition winners announced Saturday week
2. Anyone can enter (outside of the UK ok).
3. As far as I know there isn't a concrete 100% correct answer so I will be judging based on a combination of effort shown and whether it sounds convincing or not.
I hope that clears matters up a little
... we should be talking chocolate anyway you lot :D This was yet another tick in the box for Ritter here for me. They are continually pumping out these good nut flavoured bars which is great if you like that sort of thing. I can't imagine how many bars would be a drag for me to review if I didn't like nuts. Haha that would be bad wouldn't it.
HUAN - B&B will return soon don't worry. I was writing another today.
ASHLEY - Friday will be a review of a few cakes I've tried recently.
HENRY - Wiki not helpful? Come again :D
JOEL - They must think I'm some sort of chocolate tasting expert haha hardly eh!? No I think Ritter just like the coverage they get from appearing on a blog like this. The readership extends far beyond just the UK you know.
BEN - A pleasure as always eh!?
LEE - The US open was incredible. I've suffering through lack of sleep all week because of it but it was worth it.
TERRY - Comedy answers are welcome yes :D Yours didn't make me laugh though sorry :D A bit too blatant that one.
PAUL - No i'm just giving away a few Noisette bars. I don't have any of the others to give away at this time.
NIGEL - I will be watching United tonight yes. The way we are playing at the moment I expect nothing but a victory either! Who knows, we might even see Mr Berbatov make an appearance.
KATIE - I haven't seen the praline one for a long time either.
GARETH - That's an impressive answer we have here! It's the benchmark some might say :D
THEA - That does ring a bell now you come to mention it. I will have a dig around the reviews tonight. I think it might have been on one of the reviews of the cake things I tried.
Thanks for the competition entries/comments everyone. Its good to see a lot of people trying to enter at least. Apologies to those who feel the competition is unfair in any manner ... I try my best to make these things a level playing field.
JIM
Lol I would have said almonds were the most popular myself. Thats not going to help me win is it =)
When are you going to be posting the ritter sport interview you did Jim? Can you give us a flavour of what sort of questions you asked them mate?
Jim you are forever giving away things to us lot. I'm going to send you some chocs I bought over in France last week. I think I bought a few of the new milka bars which you might not have got your hands on. Its about time we gave something back I feel.
I think it's brilliant seeing you rewarding the people who read your reviews and not just random people on twitter J. I always hated that about the twitter competitions you run. How do you know those people are legitmate JCM fans and not just people that search out the competitions that people like yourself run on there for your fans. These people do exist you know.
This sounds like the Lindt bar I had not long ago. God I wish we had a decent maker of gianduja here in England. I know you rate HC's stuff v highly but for some reason they don't seem to make it very often. Talk about annoying.
Your ritter coverage is second to none jim. No one else on the internet has a collection of ritter reviews as far ranging as yours. Its almost like you could start up your own ritter fan site on its own lol.
To be clear is this competition running alongside one you are doing on Twitter? I've retweeted the review twice already lol.
What Ritter should do is at least start selling their entire range online so it there is an option for people like us to at least buy it in if we wanted to. Its understandable they would have to charge quite a lot for shipping because of the cross-international travel but I for one would be prepared to pay a bit extra to try a package full of new flavours. Lol pass the message on for us J.
Ritter should keep the packaging the same. The flavours are easily to tell apart I don't get why people are asking for it to be changed.
Gianduja chocolates are just lush. I don't understand why we have such a lack of them on our home brands. I would of thought that sort of chocolate would fit somebody like galaxy down to a tee. Fingers crossed someone from Mars picks up on this soon.
I know everyone thinks your a Hotel Chocolat fanboy to the core but I think you like Ritter even better than them dont you ;)
Is it them you work for? Someone teased saying who you worked for the other day but we are still all none the wiser! Go on Jim tell us. If you did then people would stop accusing you of working for the companies who you give high marks to all the time.
Grrrr this is tres annoying. I want one of these bars so bad but I don't have a clue what the correct answer is going to be. Is there actually a real one or is it all subjective?
I think they use hazelnuts mostly because they are easiest to get?
You didn't mention in your blog on Saturday that you were going to have to be german to win the latest comp. Bad Jim bad!
Great review Jim. Nothing Rtter Sport themed ever makes it past you does it. Have you reviewed every single chocolate of theirs now? Thats an increadible achievement if you have.
Are you still doing that interview with Ritter Jim? If you can you ask them if they plan to bring back the ritter coconut bar. That was the all time best but they stopped making it a few years back.
Isn't the colour of this wrapper darker than the biscuit and nut one? It looks similar I will give you that.
I dont know the answer but I have a fun hazelnut fact you might want to know. The hazelnut is also known as the 'cob' nut. I bet you didn't know that eh ;)
God why do some of you people even bother leaving comments you are so clueless. Ritter haven't done a gianduja like chocolate at all before. Why on earth are some of you saying that you've seen it all before? Talk about stupid.
Even as a german i can't really tell you why we use hazelnuts in so many chocolate products. I can only imagine that we love them because almost everybody grew up with Ferrero nutella and Ritter Sport Nugat and it reminds it of our childhood.
Ive got a review of this coming up soon, I loved it. One of my fave ritter bars.
ha, I'm german. it's true, hazelnuts really are the most popular nut here, not sure why though. chocolate, müsli, they are everywhere! I don't personally like them a lot and prefer peanuts for example, but am quite alone on this one... anyway, I still enjoy this particular bar very much. I'm a ritter fan in general! It's funny, because their chocolate is so ridiculously cheap here, like 50 cents a bar if it's on sale (which it usually is), that many peolpe seem to forget their quality! so it's nice to read about people outside of germany praising it. it really is good chocolate! (way better than milka and the likes in my opinion!)
very nice blog by the way, never commented before =)
I do think its about time Ritter did something more with their packaging. Its been the same for so long now I just think they all look the same. Im no marketing wizz but I would of thought if the people that buy your product think its starting to look generic then its about time you tried to do something different.
I wouldn't bother with this one because I know the whole time I would just be comparing it to the HC gianduja cubes. Theres no point trying to even compete with them, they are just untouchable in my eyes.
Jim if you thought the chocolate melted too easily why didn't you just put it in the fridge to harden it up. It sounds like a bit of common sense could of been used here.
The Germans use hazelnuts most frequently because they are the cheapest kind of nut that the manufacturers can source in that country. Im Fairly confident that is the right answer.
