September 19th: Go*Do Organic Chocolate Selection

Back in February I put up a link on the news page directing you guys to an article talking about the launch of a new brand of chocolates called Go*Do (See HERE). A few months down the line and it wasn't long before I got the opportunity to try out a few offerings from their current range. Before I talk about my thoughts on them, it's probably worth me giving you a bit of background on the brand itself. As explained in their own press article

Go*Do was "launched in October 2010 and has proven very popular in Italy and Japan". In Italian the word GODO means to enjoy "sensual pleasure" (ooooh err!), and the bars are made by a fifth-generation Italian family in their "state-of-the-art factory near the Italian Lakes". Go*Do have total control “from bean to bar – farming the cocoa, harvesting the beans, making the chocolate and forming the bars". According to their website, the "cocoa they use is organically grown in Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Peru – all areas known for high quality cocoa". Supposedly this all culminates in superb bean quality and a truly sustainable brand - I think I will be the judge of that :D

Over the past week I tried out three of their current range which I sampled in 35.0g mini bar portions. The packaging and presentation of the range was hardly what I would call unique (remarkably similar to Green & Blacks if you ask me!) but I thought it did the job nonetheless with it's paper sleeve and inner foil wrapping combo. Below are my thoughts on the bars I tried.

It made sense to start off with the plain dark chocolate offering I had so this was the first bar of theirs that I tried. My initial feelings placing the first few blocks on my tongue were rather similar to how I ended up feeling about the range as a whole - tasty but unspectacular. The first flavour influences to greet me were a plethora of milky cocoa notes and these established a pleasant unsweetened, chocolatey cocoa taste from the onset. The texture of the melt was kind and smooth - this was definitely the best paced and most pleasant mouthfeel of the three on show today. The only real thing holding this chocolate back from being one of true quality was it's lack of progression from it's initial flavour establishment. The dark chocolate taste was fresh and non-bitter, but it lacked a little depth and didn't have the definition of say a Hotel Chocolat or even a Lindt dark chocolate.

6.8 out of 10

With the above lack of flavour development evident across the plain dark chocolate I was hoping the additional coffee influence here would solve a few of these problems. To an extent the coffee factor did exactly this, however there were some additional very obvious drawbacks due to it's inclusion. The back of the pack revealed that the bar contained 10.0% coffee nibs - thats tiny little pieces of coffee beans to you unawares folk! The obvious plus side of this was that the dark now had that extra dimension of flavour, with the strong tasting coffee coming through strongly in both aroma and taste. Unfortunately the drawback of these nibs were that they were almost a complete chocolate spoiler for me, as they brought a horrible gritty feel to the mouthfeel and melt. I loved the taste of this one but texturally it wasn't nice.

7.3 out of 10

Did I do my usual trick of saving the best until last? Well no not quite, but it was still pretty good. Out of three this was the one I had least faith in - not many manufactures can make decent white chocolate so why could an infant brand like Go*Do belong in their company!? Well I'm pleased to say that Go*Do managed to do a relatively good job here - they certainly have a good base white chocolate to which I hope they will do some flavoured varieties with later down the line. Taste wise I would say it was similar to the Green & Black's vanilla white chocolate with it's light milky taste noted very lightly with a touch of well rounded bourbon vanilla. It didn't quite have the creamy long lasting taste of some of the real top white chocolates I have reviewed previously, but it was noticeably higher quality than the cheap sugary abysses of the white chocolate world.

7.1 out of 10

Overall its understandable the scores awarded here might not be too inspiring for many of you, but I hope I have got across the point that I believe Go*Do is a brand with some real potential. The chocolate itself is of a better than average quality, however I think to make themselves really stand out from a very packed market they will have to make some refinements in their packaging, presentation and possibly introduce some truly unique flavour combinations. At present I think they are positioned way too closely to the likes of Green & Blacks for them to have any decent brand cut through here in the UK. If they are to make a mark on the UK chocosphere they are going to have to offer a bit more than what they are currently bringing to the table.

3 in 1 to start off the week :) None of us can complain at that now. Its too bad the chocolate wasn't better for you.

No Hotel chocolat on a monday again? Cripes Jim what is going on these days? You fallen out with them or something ;)

Steven_F said...

Are these guys not a British brand? I ask because they look like they are but then you say in the review that they are already popular in Italy and Japan? Thise are some strange places to launch a chocolate brand before the UK.

Anonymous said...

These aren't chocolates ive come across before. Where did you get them from?

Nick said...

Spoken like a true expert Jim. I wouldn't disagree with any of the points you make in this one. It's plain to see they should have focused on getting their chocolate to offer something different.

I think these bars would become wallpaper very quickly if they were just put out of the shelves.

Andy said...

Did someone put something in your coffee this morning jim? Normally you are a lot harder lined and harsher than this.

Kim said...

Well you can't say they don't have some interesting flavours. I say good on them for launching with an espresso and white chocolate bar. It would have been much simpler for them just to go for the milk and dark option wouldn't it.

Golden_Touch said...

Not only do the wrappers look exactly like the GB's Jim but you forgot to mention how the chocolate blocks look identical.

Its almost as if they have taken a look at the way GBs is and then just copied them exactly.

Lisa said...

Where did you find these J? I'm always interested in trying chocs from the smaller posh chocolate people. I'm glad to see you going back to reviewing this sort of thing for once. Its a nice change from all those new chocs you have been featuring from cadburys etc.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Godo but these scores are just way to low for me to think of buying you :)

Kev said...

GODO ... more like NOGO lol. Sorry that was cheesey I know.

It makes my point though lol.

Robert said...

Im stunned. It is as if they just got a green and blacks chocolate bar and decided to copy it from top to bottom.

The packaging looks exactly like their old style ones + the choc squares are those well small sized ones

Michael said...

To even stand a chance these days you have to be pretty special to compete with the big boys. Just point blank copying them though isnt an option either. You just come across like godo have here and thats a cheap imitator. No ones going to be interested in these are they.

Peter said...

You rating a coffee choc a low 7? Whos taken the real Jim and where are you hiding him?

Serge said...

Brands like this who focus on all their stupid claims like being organic etc need to start realising what is important to your normal person. All we want is decent tasting chocolate.

Dan said...

Oh dear Jimbob. It would appear your gamble to swap HC monday with something different didn't pay off lol. Ho hum we live and learn as with everything. Thanks for the reviews.

Justin said...

I never like saying that these reviews effect me but todays have just confirmed that these aren't chocolates I ever need to be buying. Top review J.

Alison said...

I got stupidly excited when I saw the title of my email this morning but eugh wot a complete letdown man.

In those other countries I can see how these mightl look exciting and new.

Hey J

How amazing was that game at Old trafford yesterday :) :) :)
Im not even going to even approach the subject of Liverpool yesterday. It was just a disaster from start to finish, an embarassing result for us and we got our just desserts I think.

If we are going to carry on the footie theme lets relate this chocolates to a team lol. I think these are the West Brom of the chocolate land. They are decidely average yet no one has any big issue with them. I wiill leave it to the experts like you to decide who the Man Us and the Liverpools are

Cheers
N

Lauren said...

They should claim to be 'diet friendly' because they look so average no one is going to bother eating them lol. Im only Joking, that is harsh on a company just starting up :P

Anonymous said...

Wow this really is an exclusive. I havent even seen these lot reviewed on any of the other chocolate blogs yet. Cool find, just a shame about the chocolate.

Harry said...

I wouldn't feel bad about having to tell it like it is Jim. If these bars were pants then they were pants. There's no point you saying otherwise and lieing to us all.

Liam said...

For a minute there you had me thinking you were going to pull a shocker and tell us you liked the white chocolate one the best :-) You fooled me :P

Duncan said...

Top review mate. Loved the bit at the end. Its good to see constructive criticism rather than you just dressing these people down. Not man other bloggers would go to that effort.

Anonymous said...

Not enough here to get me to buy im afraid.

Daisy said...

Hold the back pages .... Jim in rating coffee chocolate highest shocker

:P :P :P

Colin said...

Jim whats with all the deep stuff about the marketing etc :-) Dont get me wrong I'm neither complaining or saying your wrong. or anything. Its just not something Im not used to seeing in your revviews in as much detail.

Seb said...

I remember when you first told us about these with that article you posted.

Its a shame they were all potential and no substance. When I read that stuff about them being successful in the other countries I thought we could be on to something. Oh well.

Helen said...

How random is this. I was thinking of sending you an e-mail ages ago asking if you had found these yet.
They were on sale for 50p each in my local health food store so I gave them a try. We must be expert chocolate tasters because we thought exactly the same about them lol. They aren't anything special are they! I wasn't disappointed so to speak but I didn't feel like they left me wanting to come back for more either.

Anonymous said...

I can tell if I never have these in my lifetime it's not going to be too much of a disaster is it lol.

Paul said...

Someone will come in and say im wrong but what the hell do companies think they are gaining by saying their chocolate is organic. Im sorry but wasn't it established a longtime ago that 99/100 people really dont give two hoots about organic food at times when people are struggling to make ends meet in the first place.

Anonymous said...

This is crazy. Its like they haven't even bother to make their chocolate look any different.

Ashley said...

To be fair to them they don't sound like they are a very old company. Im sure they all started out not to hot to beging with. I hope they get the chance to hold on in there and develop their own identity for the UK.

Vikki said...

Noooooo where is our hotel chocolat review :( Stuff these randomers!!!

Rebecca said...

Jim is this you aknowledging me asking for more reviews of smaller british chocolate makers or was it just by chance you had this review coming up?
Lol just say its the latter so you look better.

Junior said...

Your average person isn't even going to recognise this as a brand copycat so I wouldn't get so strung up on it.

I predict they wont do to badly you know.

Tricky said...

Its a shame we dont get a Hotel Choc review but im just as happy seeing this tbh.

Its always v interesting seeing anything new coming through from brands that at least think they are bringing something new to things. Its a bit of a shame that... well ... they arent lmao.

Michelle said...

Well well well. The coffee chocolate scoring the best out of all 3. Now there is something we all wouldn't have predicted ;)

Drew said...

Well I wont be searching these out lol. New companies need to do offer something better than this. Sorry but everything about these just looks mundane to me.

Alistar said...

How long ago did you write this review? Days? Weeks Months ago?
Im just interested because i've never seen them or anything.

Vera said...

What were the likes of Hotel Chocolate like when they first arrived on the scene?
i have looked through the comments and everyones being so negative about these guys without even giving them a fair chance. Be fair people and try them yourself.

Sakura_MOON said...

You better not also banish bits and bobs this week. A single week without any HC or Bits and bobs would be criminal J. You do that and we officially have fallen out lol =)

Linda said...

Im just thankful they don't have nuts in lol.
Sine they are nut free I might task myself with giving a 2nd opinion on these. It doesn't sound like anyone else is to keen taking up this task.

Eric said...

My god I thought these WERE Green and Blacks when I first saw them.

Im not making excuses for them but if these are the same way they are marketed in Italy and Japan where they dont have Green and Blacks, maybe they are seen as unique. Thats the only reason I can think of why they would be like this.

Lewis said...

Jim you've been very critical of a company that is just trying to establish a foothold in what we all know is like an impossible market to launch in to. Im interested to hear what you would do differently from these guys to ensure success.

If anyone going to have some expert thoughts its you my man lol.

Luke said...

Well so much for being tempted in to trying something new. These get a pass from me now.

Clare said...

I would happily try their white chocolate out to see how it is. The other two dark chocolates aren't my kind of thing though. Im still a baby when it comes to my chocolate, all that dark stuff tastes the same and bitter to me.

Francesca said...

we will all see worse things on JCM but these just look boring to me. Theres nothing tell me that these are new or fresh, I just dont get what they think it is they have apart from their organic thing that will make people want to buy them :-S I'll pass thanks.

Will said...

I can see how some people are saying they took some of their marketing from other brands but lets be fair thats probably the way to do it rather than going on a random one and pitching yourself as so far out there its viewed negatively and polarising.

Lucy said...

I think we can let you off the rating of the coffee chocoalte the highest because you haven't done a review of one for a long time. Lol you must have been craving one so you must have thought this one was a little better than it was.

As for me I would keen to give the white choc vanill a go. It cant be as bad as the milkybars I normally have to settle with. Theres such a criminal lack of everyday white chocolates its so annoying. I welcome any sort of brand that is going to give it a try at least.

Richard said...

......... I was hoping someone else was going to do me a favour and ask this for me ...no such luck though.

How much did these cost you?

Its an important thing if they come in cheaper. That german brand moser roth is a rip off lindt but you accept them because they sell their choc for cheaper. Why shouldnt these guys be given the same treatment if they match up to Green and Blacks like for like but are better priced i.e. cheaper!???

Jim said...

Hi All,

Hopefully I caught some of you unaware with the non-Hotel Chocolat post this Monday :D I do like to try keeping you guys on your toes you know.

Like some of you say it was a little annoying I couldn't replace it with something a little better scoring but hey ho I still think it has made for a decent enough review.

Again I'm running in and out of the office so apologies if this reply doesn't cover off your question directed at me.

STEVEN - I'm not to sure. Check out their website and have a look for us all.

ANON/LISA - Holland & Barrett food store.

NIGEL - It was one heck of a crazy match the United game. I was at White Hart Lane yesterday which was also a great match to see in person. All round it was great sporting weekend yet again. This week we come back down to earth with the Carling cup haha!

REBECCA - Lets say that it was a bit of both :D

ALISTAR - I wrote the review a few months ago yeah. It has been patiently waiting it's time sat in the long backlog.

VERA - I have no idea they were established long before the time I started writing this blog.

SAKURA - Don't worry I aim to please this week.

LINDA - Haha I thought you might be! No nuts to see here.

Thanks everyone - must dash! Enjoy the reviews this week.

Lets be honest Jim you've just put everyone who readss this blog off buying this chocolate now.

Poor GO*DO.

Martin said...

Its a damn shame you didn't have something better to show us Jimbo.Oh well, it kewl seeing something different for once and at least my purse strings are safe for another week at least.

Alicia said...

After reading this I have no desire to try these chocolates at all. I rarely get the chance to eat chocolate at the moment on my diet and I wont be wasting my time trying these sorry godo.

Ollie said...

Really gr8 seeing someone new on the site Jim. As much we enjoy all the Hotel Chocolat posts the variety of having someone new altogether is also just as welcome (even if they dont turn out to be very good lol).

Xen10 said...

I can handle not getting an HC review this week but if we dont get bits and bobs I will get stroppy :P
It does feel like ages since you last did us one of them. Ive seen you said at the weekend you would have us one coming up so I will trust you follow through on your promise :)

Anonymous said...

I dont have a great desire to but these but just for reference where did you buy them?

Youngpo said...

You shoud get companies to pay you for that sort of advice. You sound like you know what you are talking about.

Dazza said...

What a sevre disappointment these were eh!? After all that waiting from February and they turn out to be Green Blacks mk II. I have enough issues with the original Green and Blacks. A copycat has just got to be worse whichever way you look at it.

Kenny said...

lol those aren't the compnies I would have chosen to copy if I was these guys.

Pete said...

Excellent review Jim. I like how you have been helpful to this company by telling them what you think they need to improve rather than going on some big ra ra rant. Lol Im sure they wont be happy with their scores but at least you can tell them how to improve. You hardly gave them the nestle treatment =-P

Joel said...

To be 100% fair you should let them be for another year or so.If they are still around then you should give them a second try.

I think it would be well harsh to rule them by just these three small bars. These might just be the start of things they have planned.

Nils said...

I like your end paragrah Jimbob. I think thats a fair assesment reading the rest of your review. Writing them off completely at this point in their infancy would be harsh but yeh they look like they have a fair few things to sort out huh!?

Harry said...

Well done for featuring a smaller Bristish lot. Lol just next time make sure their chocs better :-P Only kidding mate. This all looks lush.
