I did tell you all I could have filled last weeks 'New product' review slots with several other alternatives! Carrying on our trend of chocolatey innovations, today we have another offering from our German pals Ritter Sport, who have recently released another two new bars to their range that fall outside of their seasonal limited editions i.e. two new permanent offerings! The first one which I'm reviewing today is this Ritter Sport Milch + Weizenpops ... hold that comment or e-mail asking me what that means :D ... it translates as Ritter Sport Milk & Wheat Puffs.
This new Milch + Weizenpops is the latest addition to the 250.0g range that is now made up of seven different offerings. The yellow colour packaging was only a slightly paler shade of yellow than the Cornflakes bar, though the branding and on-pack pictures were enough to differentiate it. The 6x6 blocked grid was easy to break up and the chocolate looked immensely appetising with the filling appearing even more plentiful that normal with the cream coloured centre clearly studded with the wheat puff cereal throughout.
The back of the wrapper described this bar as 'milk chocolate filled with a soft milk cream, sweet crisp wheat and hazelnuts'. The nut content wasn't something I was expecting, but it was a welcome surprise and as I will go into it was more than a welcome addition. Starting with the milk chocolate, it delivered on all expectations, bringing a full bodied sweet chocolatey flavour base. The filling inside was very much as described and had a softer, crumblier texture whilst reinforcing the dairy centred flavours established by the chocolate. On their own, the wheat puffs may have tasted a little plain and thus been meaningless, however the small fragments of nuts brought a tasty woody savoury flavour note to the party, and this contrasted nicely with the sweeter creme and chocolate elements. Despite it's 250.0g size this was unfortunately one of those Ritter bars that was almost impossible to stop eating - you'll be surprised at the rate you make your way through it.
Overall the Ritter range is becoming so large and with it consisting of so many high quality offerings it seems all to easy to just dismiss this as another 'run-of-the-mill' offering. If one were to cast aside all that had gone before however, and view it as an independent chocolate in it's own right, then it would have to be seen as a very tasty offering that does a good job combining chocolate, milk and cereal. Some may argue that this is one of the plainer tasting Ritter's out there, but I would counter that by saying that the contrasting sweetness of the chocolate is great paired with the cereal and nuts - trust me it will keep coming back for more. Would I buy it again? Perhaps not for myself, but as a 'safe' option for someone I know has plainer tastes I think this would be a great chocolate.

Ritter just don't know when to stop do they lol. I do like the sound of this one though. I used to eat sugar puffs by the lorry load when I was younger. I not only used to have them for brekkie but also when I came in from school. Putting them in a proper chocolate bar in a milk filling sounds ideal to me.
I can't help but love Ritter. They always seem to come up with new + exciting flavours. Other companies seem to think that bringing out old flavours counts as bringing something new to the table. Ritter need patting on the back for making sure that what they do is always a genuinely new idea.
Is the filling 'milk' or 'yogurt' flavoured Jimbo? The Ritter sport yogurt has to be one of my favourite chocolates of all time. Its so annoying its such a pig to get hold of.
Jim have you got any ideas what Ritter are going to do with their wrappers? It is like you were saying about Thorntons the other day. They are fast running out of colours to use aren't they lol.
This looks gorgeous. Anything with a milk and cream filling by these people always looks so lush. You're so lucky getting to review them all.
RItter are just incredible in terms of the amount of chocolates they bring out each year. If they bring out 3 limited editions each season then thats a min of 12. Thats mental in itself but then they do stuff like this on top of all that. The poor people coming up with all these must be working over time lol.
Great review Jim. I think you must now have the most complete collection of ritter sport reviews on the net. I find it amazing that one person has been able to review so many. If you ever need a hand you just need to say mate :-)
Jim did you ever get to ask Ritter whether they were going to start selling more in the UK. They sure need to start doing so judging by this.
Hey hun. The best ritter bar I would say I have ever tried is the one with the cornflakes in so I would be super keen to try this one if I ever saw it. I do like this sort of cereal especially cause when me and my brothers were younger we were never allowed to have it. Lol sugar puffs weren't allowed by my parents because they were seen as a naughty sugary cereal. Anytime that we did get to have them was like mega for us lol.
Rxxx
I know you always say you don't have any grudges against any brands etc but admit it jim you have a soft spot for ritter don't you :-P You seem to love everything they do. Them and hotel chocolat are blatantly faves of yours.
Are you ever going to start reviewing milka bars again? You haven't done us a milka review for ages now. Do you not like their chocolates anymore or something?
Grrr I hate ritter reviews. The chocolate always looks so yum but we just don't get the chance to buy it.
If I ever go to Germany I'm going to come back with one of every single Ritter they have ever created. These guys are epically cool. I so need to try more of what they do.
Do you not get a little bored reviewing so many chocs from the one brand? I get bored if I have the same chocolate bar twice in a week lol. You seem to have to eat the same sort of chocolates for months on end sometimes.
Sorry to go off line of the review but has anyone else noticed how Tesco aren't selling the white chocolate with hazelnuts anymore? It used to be one of the only flavours that my local one did but now they have just reverted to just the marzipan and peppermint. It's so annoying I love that white chocolate one.
This looks delicious Jim. Great photo btw you can see all the cereal in the filling well clearly.
Oh Ritter Sport guru one, what do you believe is the best ritter flavour ever made?
If you ever get bored trying all these lush looking chocs you do know that I'm available for hire ;-) my rates are good by the way. I will even let you send me the first lot for free to give you an idea of what I can do lol. Now how kind of me is that hey.
Ritter <3 <3 <3
Yum yum this sounds very much like the RS olympia bar I once bought from this german deli. That was easily the best RS i've ever had the chance of having. I savoured every last block of that but not been able to buy it again since :(
Hey J
You see England last night? I know you said you didn't like watching that much but you said you still watched it last weekend. I thought they were far less convincing, Wales could easily have embarassed us.
Good working keeping us on top of what ritter are doing. Unless you look at the german bit of their site you can never tell if they have anything new coming out or not. At least we all know we have you who is on top of it all.
Cheers
N
Why did they have to put hazelnuts in their? They are so obsessed with putting nuts in everything, this would have been one that the kiddies would have loved but of course now they can't have it.
It really is a shame they decide to add nuts to so many of their chocolates for no apparent reason. It limits us so much.
Everytime i see you review Ritter chocolates I convince myself that I need to buy some but i just never get around to it. If it was easier to buy their chocolates I would probs do so all the time but its just such a pain in the bum.
I'm a hardcore Ritter fan but I just can't keep up with these all. There must come up a point soon when they think enough is enough. Their factory must be the most complex thing ever having to make all these different flavours.
For the millionth time in history I have mega ritter sport envy J. I so wish they would let me be a taste tester forthem :( I would be in my element.
Two new ones you say Jim? Oh go on, give us a clue what the second is. I don't want to have to cheat and look it up ;)
What and where are the best places to find ritter chocolates in the UK? I'm not talking online but in shops I mean.
Jim i forgot to ask did you ever find out what happened to that german grocery company that used to be up here on the blog? They like suddenly deisappreared off the face of the earth if I remember right.
I don't get what people think are so special about ritter sport chocolates. I reckon anyone who has daily contact with them will just see them as another mars/nestle kind of entity. I think its just because they are a bit exotic to us that they come off as more special than they really are. You know what they say about desiring what you cant have.
Errr could you make it anymore blatant that Ritter is a brand you like.
The brands you like and the ones you don't are becoming increasingly obvious these days Jim. It used to be that you were unbiased but now its like you dont even bother trying to hide what you do and dont like. Must try harder.
Im so annoyed with myself. I just spent 2 weeks out in Germany and bought loads of different chocolates to bring back in my hand lugagge on the way back. SIlly old me though lost my bag in the airport lounge *wub* I didn't have this ritter flavour in there but i had a lot of the mini packs with all sorts of different ones in. No chocolate for me though :(
Ritter are so dumb not selling more of their chocolates here. Ones like this would go down a treat.
Show me a place I can buy this and Im all over it. Ritter sport don't know how much cash they are missing out on not providing us UK folk with their chocolate. I can imagine they would be best sellers if they brought the whole lot over for us.
I know thorntons have copied the presentation style quite closely of ritter but we still don't have anyone here in England that does all these cream/milky fillings quite like ritter do. The closest thing we have to this sort of choc is the ferrero kinder stuff and frankly thats a little embarassing for a 19 yr old bloke to have to go buy. The only solution I see is that Ritter upsticks and come set up here in England :-) That would sort this all out.
I'm right in thinking that Ritter is an affordable German brand right1? What I mean by that is that they are like a cadburys equivalent for them correct?
If they are that is just wicked. Having a make of chocolate that creates new chocolates so often for prices you don't have to pay through the nose for would be perfect. We don't get anything like that here.
Do another ritter comp on twitter Jimbob. You know you want to ;)
If I had the choice of bringing over one brand of chocolates from a different country ritter would have to be the one.
Their chocolat is so much better than lindt, milka etc. Those guys just don't compete for variety and quality.
I appear to be flying my own flag here. I don't fany this at all.
It looks to me for all the world it could be very bland. That wheat puff cereal is without any sugar on it. That is why they have to coat sugar puff cereal in copious amounts of sugar so it tastes of something. This doesn't excite me in the slightest im afraid.
Im embarassed to admit this but I only just realised the other day that ritter are from Germany. I only first saw them a few months ago and I just assumed they were a small british company.
It wasn't until I saw all your reviews that I finally clocked it.
I don't get this ritter obsession that alot of you people seem to have. By the sounds of it their chocolate isn't anything special at all. I don't think its fair you rate them highly all the time just based on the other things they put in there.
What are some of you guys on! Ritter don't need to change their wrappers. Its the people that are copying them that need to sort themselves out. Ritter wrappers have looked like this since they started making chocolates. They have just had to put up with a load of crappy companies copying their style.
Jim do you have any clue as to which of all their flavours is the most popular? If you have a good contact at Ritter Sport you should do an interview with them so we can get some answers from the horses mouth.
You think they would do that?
Well its good to see one brand still stick with 250 gram sized bars. I saw cadburys had made their big ones 230 now. Why the hell did they do that? Did they not think people would notice or something.
FACT best Ritter flavour ever = the praline 1!
Do ritter do any advertising? I had a look on youtube but couldn't find anything. I would be interested to see what their style is like, whether they go for a cadburys/mars mass approach or whether they try pull of a more lindt specialist thing. One gets the feeling it's going to be more of the everyday chocolate approach.
Whats up with ritter being able to make their chocolates look so gd?
That filling bit there just looks way too tasty for it's own good. The thing is you could say that about all of their cream fillings. They always make sure they filling their chocolates so much full of them they always look so tempting.
Ive got a bar of this on the way, excited to try it. You had the noisette one yet? Love it!
I don't think I would be crazy about the texture of puffed wheat, I much prefer crunchier elements. The additional creme has me interested though. I hope these come out in the US.
Nice review as always, Jim.
Hi All
What can I say guys? Thanks again for all the comments and all on the review. Ritter Sport seems to drag the feedback from so many of you. For one of the so called smaller companies you guys always seem to have so many positive things to say about them.
I can't say I blame you when the chocolate is this good. They never seem to compromise when it comes to their quality. This is no bad thing of course :D
One thing that a load of you have asked me today is why we get such a restricted range and whether they are going to expand their operations anytime soon? .... Well to be 100% honest with you guys I don't know :D Let me get back to you on that ... I like the idea someone had about doing some Ritter Sport interviews. I think that would be a great feature to have on the site one day.
JUSTIN - It doesn't have a yogurt tang. It's a creamy milky filling.
DAVID - They still have some colours left they haven't played around with :D I do see your point though. It wont be long before they run out.
BECKY - Yeah I do have a soft spot for them. I still rate their bars as I see it though, that is one thing I wont compromise on.
SALLY - I'm having a great deal of difficulty getting Milka bars for the moment. Watch this space as that could change soon. If it does expect an avalanche of reviews :D
ANON - Bored reviewing Ritter? Haha never!
NIGEL - The match last night sent me to sleep. Granted I was tired after work but genuinely no football game has sent me to sleep before.
LINDA - That is a question I ponder myself in next weeks Ritter review :D Answers on postcards the lot of you :D
NICK - Seemingly they went out of business.
LAUREN - Sorry for sounding evil but that made me laugh :D Poor you.
TIM - You're never to old to buy a Kinder chocolate bar :D
MIKE - I believe their bars retail between the 1-1.5 Euro mark.
LOTOChoc - Check out next week :D
RODZILLA - I wouldn't hold out too much hope of this being US bound but who knows eh!? A Roddy review special will be in order if it does I think :D
Thanks for the comments everyone. Im going to approach Ritter right now about a potential interview
JIM
im stupidly holding out a tiny glimmer of hope that this one might get released here. If you go to waitrose you can get the biscuits and nuts large ritter panel. Who knows, waitrose might just go crazy and decide to start selling this one too. We can but hope :-)
Sugar puffs aren't my fave cereal but anything made by ritter is cool to me. It wouldn't be the first flavour I would buy if I were presented with the lot of them, thats not to say I wouldn't try it though m8 ;)
There are so many people trying to talk like they have a worthwhile opinion on something they've not ever tried before. What is the point ppl? Companies must hate it when people try talking about their products without any 1st hand experience. Its so stupid to form a view on just seeing something on the internet. Sadly most people on here don't understand that concept.
You wouldn't believe what I would give just to try some of these ritter chocs you get to write about. I you better realise how lucky you are!
Do these get sent to you straight from Germany or do they keep stock in the Uk? If they have some stock in the UK its even more stupid that they choose not to sell it.
It would appear we need to get you some help Jim. You seem to have become obsessed with anything brandishing the word new. Don't worry fella we know some good souls that can help you out.
I say this every time :) :) :) ....... they have to have run out of ideas now :) :) :)
Have you got any of those cadburys mascots yet Jim? FOr some reason I realllllllly want to try them. Im getting hyped for anything to do with olympics at the mo. I'm alrread so excited about it.
Jim are you keeping tabs on Andy Muarry @ the us open? What did you make of England last night agaisnt wales?
hi this is my first ever comment. I hope you don't see me as sucking up here but I think your reviews are just brilliant. Quite how one guy can write about chocolate in such a detailled manner is just brilliant. Althought i haven't commented b4 I havebeen a long term reader.from afar. I felt like I had to write to you today because I wanted to side with you and say I loved this flavour 2. My friend thought it was a little bland but she doesn't know anything, lol she thinks that nestle crunch is better (see what I mean). I'm already looking forward to the next review. Thank you for maintaining such a wonderful blog I read everyday.
Yummy this looks very inviting. It would be a good thing it coming in such a big size for me. It wouldn't last long in my hands.
This looks gorgeous. Anything with a milk and cream filling by these people always looks so lush. You're so lucky getting to review them all.
