October 19th: Kellogg's Krave Chocolate Caramel & Krave Totally Chocolatey

I'm sure a lot of my UK readers would have noticed the big marketing push that Kellogg's have put behind their Krave cereal in the last month. In a nutshell, Kellogg's have devised a £1.7 million advertising campaign (with full in-store support!!) that gives shoppers the opportunity to vote on Facebook (See HERE) for their favourite of two flavours. Kellogg’s will then roll out the winner from 1 January 2012 as a permanent addition to its stable of Krave cereals.

I have to hand it to Kellogg's - for a campaign targeted at 16-25 year olds they are hitting me in every channel possible. Every TV ad break, every bus stop shelter, every underground poster, even on the Internet - I'm being posed the question Krave Chocolate Caramel or Krave Totally Chocolatey?

Check out below for my thoughts, photos, scores and conclusions to this quandary:

Kellogg's Krave Chocolate Caramel
'Crispy caramel cereal shells with a chocolate centre'
Kcal 188 Fat 6.0g Fat(sats) 3.0g Carbs 27.0g (per 30.0g with 125ml Semi-Skimmed Milk)

This was the first I tried, and was the one that I imagined would be my favourite out of the two before conducting my taste test. Although visually imperatively with their funky looking cheetah style aesthetics, taste wise they didn't do much in the way to inspire. The promised caramel element was for me never forthcoming, with the wheaty taste of the cereal only enhanced by the sweet chocolate flavoured centres to a mild degree. To be honest I couldn't really tell that there was much difference from the original Krave (See HERE) apart from the lacking hazelnut.

6.1 out of 10

Kellogg's Krave Totally Chocolatey
'Crispy chocolatey cereal shells with a chocolate hazelnut centre'
Kcal 191 Fat 7.0g Fat(sats) 3.0g Carbs 26.0g (per 30.0g with 125ml Semi-Skimmed Milk)

This Totally Chocolatey variant had noticeably larger sized pieces compared to any of the other three Krave flavours I had tried previously. Not only were the cereal pieces bigger, but they were also the clear winner in terms of taste - I'm not the biggest lover of kiddie cereals (I'm a boring old Bran Flakes man haha!!) but this one was pretty damn good. The outer shells pieces were as promised very chocolatey, and they reminded me instantly of Nesquick cereal. Inside the gooey chocolate filling parts delivered a delightful creamy flavour input that had a suggestion of salty, woody hazelnut which livened up the overall taste no end. Ladies and gentlemen we had ourselves a winner!!

7.0 out of 10

--------

So the Jim's ChocolateMission ruling says that Krave's Totally Chocolatey is the clear winner out of the two. What do you guys think? Do you have a favourite? Will you be passing up the opportunity to cast your vote at all :D :D :D Drop me a comment with your thoughts!

I cant seem to get 2 mins rest way from all the advertising either Jim, its just absolutely everywhere its hard to escape from.

What do you think about the telly adverts they have running for them at the moment? I dont think they are that annoying but I dont see how what they have done is meant to appeal to me. Its not very funny I dont think.

Kim said...

Totally chocolatey was always going to be the winner. Chocolate caramel sounds so boring compared to getting double the amount of choc + the hazelnut.

David said...

Is it just me that thinks these cereals always sound better than they really are? I've had so many cereals in the past where all the advertising has made them sound like the tastiest thing in the world only for them to be horrendously disappointing. The other thing that annoys me about cereal like krave is that if you eat them early in the morning you get so hungry by the time lunch comes around.

Nick said...

One would suspect that it doesn't matter what everyone votes for. These sneaky companies have a habit of funneling people down the route they want to take.

Put it this way, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the totally chocolate variety the one being 'launched' in Jan.

Stu said...

ps the advert is viewable here if you need to see it http://tellyads.com/show_movie.php?filename=TA13652

Ben said...

Let me get this straight. First we have Turkish delight, then we have an interview and now we get cereal? Did it ever come across your mind that people might want to see some acutal chocolate reviewed sometime. Sort this site out its a right mess.

Justin said...

I had you down for picking the caramel one Jimbo.

Linz said...

Am I a weirdo for preferring to eat cereal dry? Lol sometimes I take little bags of cereal to college just to eat. The normal krave (red box) is one of my fave to do this with. I haven't tried the dark choc one yet as I cant seem to find it.

Colin said...

Are they forcing people to buy big boxes just to try them? Thats never going to work is it.

Who the heck needs all that cereal? This better be running for a decent amount of time or people arent ever going to be able to try both.

Gamer360 said...

Totalley chocolatey with heated up milk = uber amounts of win.

Anonymous said...

I gave up eating cereal like these a long time ago. They are just peoples one way ticket to diabeties and ill health.

Richard said...

I just thought I would mention that these are currently Buy on get one free in tesco so you can try both for just the price of one. If I were Kellogg's I would have just made them in small packs first and done it that way. Its so crappy when you get lumbered with a pack of crappy cereal that you dont want.

Joel said...

Did kelloggs ask you to do this or were you just curious yourself about whcih was better?
I would be disappointed to hear from you if this is all a stunt and that you have just set this all up as an advert.

Xen10 said...

I dont get how you are supposed to cast your vote on the facebook page :S Either im just being very stupid or the things broke.

Ryan said...

I get bored with cereal so I get my mum to swap what she buys everytime she has to buy a new pack in. I will land the message with her to buy some Krave tc but knowing here she will pick up the wrong one.
I will tell her to look out for the blue packaging but she never takes notice of anything I say lol.

Trish said...

How can you people eat this sort of thing for breakfast? Eugh i love chocolate and everything but cereals like this are just too much for me in the mornings. All I need is a banana and a coffee and im right as rain for the day ahead.

Pattra said...

I must be blind because im right in the middle of the people they are going after (20) and I haven't seen a scooby on this.

Not that it matters at all, I don't think I will be trying either of these as I dont eat cereal often. When I do I just go for something simple like rice crispies.

Wendy said...

If the caramel one wins then I think we can all presume this was all a fix from the start. Any whos has tried the two will think that the chocolate one is the best by miles. Jims so right when he says that the caramel chocolate kind just tastes like the original one.

Ashley said...

My friends all love krave im surprised they haven't mentioned this face off yet. Im sure as soon as they hear about it they will have the great debate :-) Knowing this country more people will vote in this competition than will vote in the general election lol.

Anonymous said...

I havent tried them yet but its the totally chocolate that sounds nicest to me.

Lucy said...

I love competitions like this im such a sucka i buy in to all of them lol. Walker, revels, mountain dew lol you name it i always enter into these things.

Kieran said...

Did you really bother voting or are you just promoting that totally choc is better? I had you down as a dead cert caramel chocolate man. so much for knowing you :P

Anonymous said...

Product placement much? I thought more of you than this JIm. You are selling out big time.

Olly said...

I don't know whats worse for me? The fact I normally just want to sleep longer and dont have time to eat breakfast or that if I did I would eat something like Krave lol.

These cereals are so bad if you look at all the nutritional garb. It has to be better just to start the day with a bucket full of caffeine lol.

James said...

The caramel looks and sounds better but if its the other you say tastes better that will be the first im trying. I know I can trust the JCM POV to show me the light.

Daisy said...

Great pics here Jim. The DC ones sound like they are the one to pick out the two. I like the sound of them having squidgy centres yet not turning to complete mush when in milk. I hate mulchy cereal ewwww.

Dx

Fiona said...

It takes me ages to eat a box of cereal so by the time I buy one of these and eat them all I bet you the other flavour will gone and the comp over. I wont lose sleep over it :) I will jus start with the totally chocolate as you say its the best.

Naiomi said...

Jim can I just make one cheeky request please. I've never asked for any b4 btw ;) ;) Im not like other ppl.
Please please please plssssssss can you do a review of this hotel chocolat hot chocolate set http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk/src/cj/Classic-Dark-and-Chilli-Liquid-Chocolat-Gift-Box-P500082/
I know you have done the dark one before and you rate it highly but i need to know about the chilli.

Im not sure how fast you can do these things but if you could get something turned around by mid Nov that would be so cool. My friends bday is Dec 2nd so I need a few weeks b4 i need to buy it from HC or order from them. Thanks so much if you can do it.

Alicia said...

I read somewhere that the average bowl of krave cereal with milk has more than 16 spoonfuls of sugar in it. Its astounding people aren't even made aware of this. Personally I find it utterly astounding they are allowed to sell this sort of crap to people.

Emily said...

<3 <3 <3 <3 Krave is so good if you warm the milk before you put it in. It makes a hot chocolate like milk at the bottom.

Paul said...

KRRRRRRAVE

Lol sorry me and my friends love saying that in the style of the voice on the advert. You have to congratulate kelloggs, i think Krave must have been successful for them because everyone i know loves it.

Anonymous said...

Trust me there is no escaping all this crave hype. Its beginning to drive me just a little loo loo.

Matt said...

This is a nice change up from the norm Jim. I love your chocolate reviews the best but seeing you branch off to review others bits and pieces every now and then isn't a bad thing :) it must keep you sane at least lol.

Hazel said...

Krave isn't bad but it will never replace the almighty coco pops. im talking about the normal coco pops btw. Not the numerous amounts of crappy iterations they have made in the last few years. The only half decent one was the choco moon and stars and that one isn't around anymore grrrr.

Robert said...

Can we have some more halloween reviews please. Have you seen the new cadbury freaky fingers? We had some today they are very nice.

Yasmine said...

I think there should be a deal whereby you don't ever have to see all the adverts again if you have tried one of the flavours. How said is it to say that lol. Its the future of advertising .... they leave you alone if you buy it Lmao =]

Duncan said...

I didn't think you were too hot on your cereals dude? I thought you were reviewing some of the american ones just because you were being sent them from those people in the adverts?
Not a complaint - great review here, I especially like the way you did the photos.

Linda said...

Oh no I hope the kids dont see all this. They can't have krave because of their nut allergies and they threw such tantrums when I didn't allow them to have it when we were once in tescos. I wish kelloggs would stop advertising them so much, the little uns just that they have chocolate in and get hypnotised by it. They aren't old enough to understand their nut problems fully yet.

Anonymous said...

Yummy Ive seen these advertised. I well want to try the caramel and chocolate but I think the double choc will win in the end.

Fran said...

They might aswell stop the competition. We all know that chocolate mission and Jim know best. Totally Chocolate will be victorious now it has JCM backing.

Ian said...

LMAO @ that anon poster. There are far worse probs in our society than kelloggs running a silly cereal competition. Get over it already.

Craig said...

Its so cheeky them making people pay £2 to try them each. £2 for both would have been a good deal but £4 for the lot sounds excessive for cereal. Why when its just a temp competition did they not do mini packs? By the time any normal person finishes the first pack the comp would probably be over. Only cereal freaks who eat it all day will have a chance of trying one then the other.

Peter said...

Im going to try these now just to see what all this fuss is about. They got me hook line and sinker with the marketing lol.

Jay said...

They should have got people to come up with the flavours themselves rather than dictate them to us.

I would have voted they make a chocolate mint version. There isn't anything like it at all and they could have been 100% unique then. Instead we just got two flavours that were like the ones before.

Anonymous said...

Does any one know whos winning so far? Are they telling us or do we not find out until the end?

Ganesh said...

I must just be a saddo because I have eaten the same breakfast cereal since I can remember. Weetabix is the only way to go people. Ignore all your nonsense with these other crappy ones, you can't beat a good bowl of weetabix with warm milk and sugar.

Sarah said...

Its so true what someone has said already about it being the worst thing ever when you are left with a big pack of cereal that you realise you dont like all that much the first time you have it. That always used to happen to me when I was small and my parents used to make me finish the packet before they bought me a new one :( :( They were such meanies.

Roxy said...

Funnily enough my brother & I did the test on Sunday Jim & we were both for the Totally Choc! :) x

Alan said...

My sister tried the original one when it was launched but although she finished it shes never bought it again. They didnt do much for me either lol

I still think its an age thing, although these are aimed at people up to 25 if you grew up with Coco pops (original) you'll like them better lol.

@Hazel - i agree!

I just have corn flakes or a mix of shredded wheat and Raisin Wheats these days :)

Emily said...

Chocolate Weetabix is lovely. Also it has less sugar per 100g than bran flakes.

Sofia said...

Oh my, but they look delicious! :D

Diggsy said...

Totally chocolatey was blantantly always being positioned to win. It makes you wonder why they bothered at all with the choc caramel if they only made a half assed attempt at it? What would have been mega cool is if they made the outer bit chocolatey and then had gooey caramel in the middle section. Mmmmmm my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Anonymous said...

Are we ever likely to see any more halloween reviews or are you just going to waste more of october talking about crappy kids cereals.

Tomas said...

Does anyone know if Krave is seen as a success or not? You see all different kinds of cereals appear and disappear all the time but theres always a set few like corn flakes etc that are always a constant. Meh I just wonder if krave has managed to break onto the elite bunch that stick around forever and ever.

{--Geekboy--} said...

A chocolate site saying that double the amount of chocolate is a good thing? Well I never thought we would see this. /sarcasm

Estelle said...

Having chocolate in the mornings is sticking yourself on a one way highway to future health problems.
I know its a way of roping children in to eating something for their fuel in the mornings but believe me eating cereal like Krave everyday is going to do you some damage. Whatever happened to people being happy with Readybrek? I will always remember the central heating for kids tagline they came up with. That was so effective.

Aaron said...

I see you have aknowledged that the total chocolatey is better but im surprised that you still gave it as lower mark as you did. I don't think your scoring charts work for cereal. You shoud rework them so they better reflect what people want from them.

Anonymous said...

I haven't tried either yet but its going to be the x2 chocolate one if I do now. Lol you dont make the caramel one sound all that good.

Gamer360 said...

omg my mum tried fobbing me off with fake krave from tesco. It tasted so bad it wasn't even half as good as krave is. Don't worry I registered my disgust with her lol She will know not to mug me off next time she goes shopping. I want krave dammit.

Charlotte said...

Im really not in to these sort of cereals and haven't tried any of these Krave ones. If I ever eat cereal i just have weetabix but thats only very rarely. A few rounds of toast and OJ get the day started 4 me.

Terry said...

I remember being so excited about trying Krave last yr but I found it was a real letdown. Unless I see some more people saying these are remarkably different from the first two they came out with I think I will just give them a miss to be honest with you. Wheetos ftw.

Anonymous said...

A site called Chocolate Mission picking the one with double the amount of Choc? Now there's a surprise ;) j/k

Mick said...

Do you know what? I couldn't care less which one wins or loses. Just as long as they stop that annoying advert being played out over and over again. I swear I just cant get away from the damn thing.

Piers said...

I used to love all these sort of cereals but I grew out of them. It got to the point where they all tasted the same to me.

Katie S said...

Its little wonder why we have an obesity problem here if the biggest cereal maker in the country is promoting the idea that our kids make a decision between cereal flavours like these. They shouldn't be allowed to advertise this sort of thing.

Gemknowsbest said...

Yay its so cool to see a review of these, I was expecting you to do this.
Im sad enough to also have tried both and I fully back JCM. Totally Chocolatey FTW.

Freddie said...

I dont understand why they didn't have the nuts in with the caramel flavour. That would hae made it tons better dont you think.

No doubt it will be the flavour they come up for next week lol. You wouldn't out it past them would you.

Darren said...

Promoting this sort of cereal to kids Jimbo tsk tsk you should know better ;)
LOL in all seriousness I so wont be trying these. Its yet another silly marketing fuss about nothing. I willing to bet they are so similar you can't tell the difference between them if you werent already thinking about it.

Ross said...

I could eat krave all day lol. I have it in the mornings and when i get home from school. I even had it for my tea last week. im a krave addict.

EducatingSarita said...

Whats with you currently reviewing all these things that aren't chocolate? You never used to review stuff like cereal before :S im all confused with whats going on.

Thea said...

Hmm I have seen Krave advertised only once, after they came up on JCM earlier (by request?), since when I've been looking out for them to try them, with no luck yet -- apparently they are invisible to those like me outside the market age bracket ;) Jim, or anyone, could you please let me know where you found these? Although I'm slightly wary of trying caramel-flavored cereal at all...

Rodzilla said...

I think a chocolate shell with a caramel center would have been better.

Jim said...

Hi All ... and I mean all :D :D There are far to many comments today to respond one-by-one! I hope you all understand! Thanks ever so much for all the feedback I know Kelloggs have been reading everything you have to say.

I'm in agreement with you all about the ads. They are getting a little overplayed on TV aren't they :D If you are looking to actively avoid them people I wouldn't suggest you become an avid Sky Sports news watcher like myself.

Here's my attempt at filtering some of your questions. Apologies if I miss you out.

STU - Thanks for the link but I cant imagine anyone will have missed this one.

JOEL - Kellogg's sent me samples to do this review yes.

KIERAN - Now you mention it I haven't cast my vote yet. When I get the time totally chocolatey will clock up another one :D

OLLY - More sleep or food?? I say do both and just be late haha :D

NAIOMI - Request noted.

ROBERT - Request noted.

DUNCAN - Thanks for the nice words about the photos. The old man's ego will be getting inflated with every comment like yours.

CRAIG - Mini packs would have been sensible but if they can get £2.00 a transaction you can hardly blame them.

ROXY - Well it's good to hear I have approving readers.

ALAN - Shredded wheat!? You want to get involved with Fruit n Fibre lad :D That's the real deal.

ESTELLE - Readybrek :D :D Now that is a long forgotten old favourite of mine. Legendary stuff. I think a chocolate Readybrek review may have to be done when the temperatures plunger. Forget central heating for kids .... more like central heating for Jim :D

THEA - I believe they are available in all the supermarkets now. It wont be long before the competition ends and they are left with thousands and thousands of packs that they will flog off for cheap! I know how these things work in FMCG ... trust me it will happen.

RODZILLA - I wont disagree with you on that.

Well all I hope you all enjoyed this special Kellogg's post. Coming up this weekend we have the real bulk of the JCM halloween coverage starting. I hope it meets the seal of approval.

Stay well

JIM

Thea said...

What happened to this Friday's post, has the schedule changed?

Rob said...

Great reviews Jim. I like that you just didn't waffle on as much about these. I guess there is only so much to say about breakfast cereal after all.

Anonymous said...

Why are you reviewing breakfast things on a chocolate website?

Nate said...

The best thing about Krave is that it doesn't go all soggy and horrible in the milk like a lot of cereals do. You take something like cookie crisp for instance. That stuff goes to sludge within it being in milk for 10 seconds. Krave is different.

Bryan said...

You should have done a competition to give some of these two away so we could try them. I think having to pay £2 for just a single box is a little steep if you ask me.

Anonymous said...

Lol could they have made more flavours of krave already? I think there's five now isn't there?

Stace# said...

Where is the Friday post Jim?

Dixydivaxox said...

For record im saying now that Lion bar cereal beats both of these. http://www.beliscity.com/images/lion-cereal.jpg I give it nine out of 10.
