Here at ChocolateMission we get giddy with excitement anytime we hear that there is a new Lindt Excellence variety available. The Lindt Excellence range is one of the most consistent in terms of high scores on ChocolateMission. If you take a look at the archives you will see that bars such as the Lindt Excellence Caramel (See HERE), Touch of Sea Salt (See HERE) and Chilli (See HERE) are just three of the flavours that have previously scored extremely well. Given the previous history with the range, and our love of all things classified as ‘Superfoods’ (sad aren’t we haha!!) we thought a Lindt Excellence Blueberry Intense sounded like a fantastic idea.
Take a guess what format this Lindt Excellence bar came in!? No, sorry, no prizes for guessing it was indeed a 100.0g, 2x4 block offering. Again this particular Excellence flavour is a product of the Lindt team based in France and according to the packaging it is exported to the UK, Swedish, German, Australian and Austrian markets – random selection huh!? Speaking of the packaging, the presentation was as consistently wonderful as we’ve come to expect from the Excellence range. Both the cardboard sleeve and chocolate bar looked very classy, and the blueberry fruit smells that emanated from the foil wrapping were incredibly forthcoming and nicely indicative of the taste to come.
The on pack description described the bar as ‘extra fine dark chocolate with almonds and blueberries’; this did surprise us for reasons mainly two-fold. Firstly the ‘extra fine dark chocolate’ was in actual fact their 47.0% chocolate – far from their darkest chocolate recipe. Secondly the addition of the almonds didn’t seem a natural pairing with blueberries – not one of us made the connection between the two. Should we have been concerned with any of this!? Why of course not!! The dark chocolate was still richer, and fuller flavoured than the majority of chocolates that are offered on such a mass scale. As for the blueberry and almonds contained in the chocolate, both combined made for a lovely mixture of fruit and nut flavours. Just as we hoped the blueberry fruit was especially differentiated from the norm, and the flavouring came across as particularly real tasting with its juicy, sweet berry naturalness. The chocolate was very full flavoured and satisfying especially when consumed as an accompaniment for an after dinner coffee.
Overall expectations set by the rest of the Lindt Excellence range were met and fans of the collection will certainly not be left disappointed by it if blueberries are to their liking. The bar isn’t quite as flawless as some of the other Lindt Excellence and we could suggest further improvements such as the use of a stronger dark chocolate and bigger almond pieces. Those are very, very minor grievances though, and as ever it is just us being overly critical on what is really a fantastic offering. Blueberry chocolates aren’t exactly the most common, so we feel that Lindt are also deserving of credit for trying to bring something new to the table. If you are a fan of the Lindt Excellence range we find it very unlikely you are going to feel feeling short changed by this one – You won’t be surprised to hear that it has merited a ChocolateMission recommendation! Let us know if you have tried it yet @Chocmission.
