Hotel Chocolat Ginger Puddles

It was back in 2012 that we last took a look at Hotel Chocolat’s Dark Ginger Puddles, and they received a high score from Jim. When I first received this freebie I thought the puddles range had undergone another presentation makeover; gone was the frosted bag and black ribbon; now we had slimline packaging with a long label that hides the less attractive plastic. Only after a visit to their store did I realise that the original frosted packaging still remains in use; the change here is simply because it is a sample. Quite a substantial sample as well. A usual bag weighs 110g for £5.50, but here we are getting 80g absolutely free when you buy an introductory Tasting Box for £9.95.

The buttons have a rather matte and dusty appearance, but are generous in size. They are quite thick and make a substantial snack that lingers in the mouth for some time. After three puddles I felt quite satisfied.

The puddles smell of alluring gingerbread, but did not taste of gingerbread. To be fair, the chocolate is not described as ‘gingerbread’ puddles, just ‘ginger’, but when the taste does not meet the expectation of the initial smell, you can’t help feel a little disappointed.

The ginger flavour was certainly there, although I would have liked it stronger. It combines well with the earthy tones of the 70% dark chocolate and leaves you with a warmly spiced after taste. These aren’t the best chocolate puddles in Hotel Chocolat’s range, nor are they the best ginger flavoured chocolates out there, but they are still enjoyable and will keep you going for some time.
