The second in Dairy Milk’s Big Taste bars is Toffee Wholenut. Just like the Triple Choc Sensation, it weighs in at 300g, but I could easily see it working as a single portion bar you might buy from the front counter of a newsagents. It has a unique and pretty design as each square has a smooth dome with runny caramel and whole hazelnuts hiding underneath. Upon opening the re-sealable wrapper my nose was treated to a sensory delight. Even from a considerable distance I could smell strong notes of toffee and vanilla.
The Dairy Milk chocolate coating may be relatively thin, but it absorbs all the flavours of the filling, which includes vanilla toffee and a deep buttery caramel. The combination of runny caramel and condensed milk filling gives it the appearance of a Cadbury’s Cream Egg once the top has been bitten off, but this is much creamier as it melts in the mouth and the taste is far more satisfying. The whole hazelnuts taste very fresh, are full of nutty tones and also add a gratifying crunch.
I would say that the recommended four-square portion is not quite enough to fill you up, but two rows of this bar is just about right for one sitting. Although, toffee, caramel, and hazelnut does not sound like a particularly original combination, I can’t actually think of an equivalent bar on the market that incorporates all those elements quite in this way. Big Taste Toffee Wholenut delivers in every way, and potentially surpasses the classic Dairy Milk bar.
