It’s been a while since Ritter Sport has made an appearance @ChocolateMission, probably due to a lack of new varieties on the market. Still, I thought it would be fun to go back in time and visit an old favourite of Jim’s reviewed back in 2010. Ritter Sport’s Rum, Raisins, Hazelnuts comes in a bright red wrapper that is simple, but puts adequate emphasis on all its main elements. It is presented in Ritter’s signature 100g square block, which gives the brand a unique appearance.
When you open the re-sealable easy peel wrapping, you are immediately hit with an intense, but comforting smell of Jamaican rum. It is if you had just opened a spirits bottle rather than a chocolate bar. The rum is very strong, but the creamy milk texture of the chocolate balances it out, so that it is not overpowering.
Thick squares are ideal for cramming the chocolate full of fruit and nuts, but while the raisins are lovely and juicy, and bring a soft chewiness to the bar, they were coated in a number of undissolved sugar crystals. I found the hazelnuts lacked flavour, and although chunky, they had a bitty texture possibly indicating that there were just a few too many.
As much as I enjoyed eating Ritter Sport’s Rum, Raisins, Hazelnuts, it did not actually satisfy any hunger pangs or cravings. I gobbled up the whole bar quite mindlessly without feeling that it had even touched the sides.
