Gnaw Marzipan sounds more like an instruction than the name of a chocolate bar, but it is one that probably half the nation would happily oblige. For the other half, it would be a reluctant chore. Marzipan is one of those divisive ingredients, and for a long time I was squarely in the dislike category. Over time I have gradually acclimatised to its exceptionally sweet nature, but am still a long way off saying I’ve moved over to the ‘like’ bench.
Gnaw’s milk and white marbled chocolate bar is eye-catching, even to those who would not normally buy something with marzipan in it (hence the review). The smell of marzipan is very strong, and despite being non-alcoholic, actually gave off an alluring whiff of cherry kirsch. In fact, the chocolate also had heady alcoholic notes in the flavour too. This added dimension helped mellow the saccharine marzipan for a sweet, but not teeth shivering bar.
The pieces of marzipan are all but invisible in the chocolate, yet although I could not see a spec, they definitely added bite. The marzipan had a texture similar to that of cacao nibs and was thoroughly dispersed throughout the bar. If you are a marzipan fiend, then Ganw’s Marzipan chocolate will tick all the right boxes. If you are not a fan of, it might still be worth a go in small quantities.
