Given that the last Marks & Spencer milk chocolate I tried was so incredibly sweet, I had a foreboding feeling that something with both butterscotch and maple syrup might be even more so. There was hope, however, and that came in the packaging. Unlike the brightly coloured cheap plastic wrapper used for the Caramel Filled Milk Chocolate, M&S’s Milk Chocolate with Butterscotch & Maple Syrup is presented in understated, but elegant cardboard and hosts a Fair Trade logo in the corner. The label also states that it is a single origin bar from the Dominican Republic.
At 32% it contains the average cocoa content that you would expect for a supermarket brand chocolate bar, but a little more worrying is the fact that cocoa mass comes seventh on the list of ingredients.
After unpeeling the chocolate from the foil, I was hoping for some sweet buttery aromas, but it was void from any scent whatsoever. The bar did look attractive, however, featuring the engraved M&S signature and showing little flecks of butterscotch pieces lurking underneath the surface.
To my surprise, the chocolate had a pleasant sweetness formed by a combination of buttery vanilla notes and a hint of salt. The butterscotch pieces provide a satisfying crunchy texture within the creaminess of the bar. Much improved upon from the last round, I would highly recommend popping this in your shopping basket next time you are in Marks.
