A playful squirrel juggling lemons is all that was really needed to persuade me to buy Gnaw’s Lemon Meringue chocolate bar. The fact that I bought it from Oxfam and my £2.49 is going to a good cause also made me feel less guilty as I tucked in.
The super yellow white chocolate definitely smells the part as it has the combining scent of a lemon meringue dessert and refreshingly zesty lemonade. This did not come through in the flavour, however, which unfortunately was too subtle. There were a few cocoa butter notes mingled with sweetness, but nothing distinct, and the chocolate felt waxy in the mouth. The texture did improve over time as it eventually began to melt and create a buttery swelling sensation. As for the meringue pieces scattered on top, these added little to the taste and texturally only provided powdery bursts before dissolving.
Unlike my previous praise for Gnaw chocolate, I’m afraid I felt no desire to gnaw very far through this bar.
