I found these luxurious sounding chocolate covered nuts at Holland & Barrett and they somehow found themselves in my shopping basket. Weighing in at 95g, this bag of pecan nuts has been coated in milk chocolate and sprinkled with cinnamon. The attractive packaging has a wintery themed design of falling leaves, while the cellophane wrapping allows you to see the contents.
What it does not reveal, however, is that lurking at the bottom of the bag, the chocolate covered pecans get decidedly smaller. A collection of little round balls had slithered to the bottom, and these were clearly not pecans at all, but just cinnamon chocolate with a hollow centre.
The whiff of cinnamon is so strong when you open the bag that it is like opening the lid on a jar of ground cinnamon from the spice cabinet. It is very appealing and makes you want to dig in straight away.
I think I would have preferred the pecans to be the star of the show, but they were only a subtle aftertaste to compliment the prominent cinnamon notes. The milk chocolate was pretty average, giving off a slight malty flavour.
While not as flavoursome as I would have liked, the pecans did provide a lovely soft crunch. Biting into the hollow balls, on the other hand, was just like eating cinnamon flavoured air.
Although nuts are full of protein, 68% of the contents is milk chocolate, so 95g is not as filling as you might think. If not careful, you could easily get through a whole bag in one sitting.
