Gower Cottage Brownies

Chocolate brownies can be a thing of beauty, but they can just as easily be a hard, dry, disappointment, depending on the skill of the person who is making them. For this reason, it is not often I buy brownies, and it is actually my mum that we have to thank for the review I have to share with you today.

As a bit of a QVC shopping addict, she discovered Gower Cottage Brownies while watching the shopping channel. They were on special offer at £21 instead of the £24.99 you’d have to pay from the company’s own website. Even on special offer £21 is dear ffor a box of twelve, so the family were expecting something pretty brilliant.

Although this is the first I have ever heard of Gower Cottage, the family run company has now been going for ten years strong. Mother of two, Kate, is the founder and baker of these Welsh made brownies, using high quality ingredients, including British butter, free range eggs, and dark Belgian chocolate. They are packaged with care in a gift box that has a nostalgic feel with its use of font and traditional Victorian style design. The small rectangular brownies are dusted with icing sugar and wrapped with raffia and tissue paper, making them the perfect present for any occasion.

Once opened, we put ours in a tin to keep them fresh, and whenever we opened the lid, we received a welcoming fresh bakery smell. Because of its decadence, many joke that chocolate is sinful, but one bite of these brownies and I was sent to heaven. They have a light crumbly surface, with a slightly under-baked centre that makes the brownies incredibly moist as they melt in the mouth. It may be a solid mixture, but it is soft, fluffy, and feels as though it is an indulgently gooey liquid.

The texture of Gower Cottage Brownies is what makes them so special, but their taste is exceptional as well. The high dark chocolate means they are not too sweet, but that does not stop them being incredibly moreish. If there was one downside that they are too moreish. It is so easy to just eat one brownie after another and still wish there were more after wolfing them all down. It requires great restraint to restrict oneself to only one or two.
